I have some uranium ore I'm thinking about refining. It has radium and rock and whatnot in it that is less healthy to have around. I'm just using it as samples for my gamma ray spectrometer and tube counter and the smaller the sample volume while still having high reactivity, the better for cloud chambers, storage, and similar.

Small correction. Amyl nitrate is a controlled substance in the usa. You canot get it without a prescription. And good luck finding someone to fullfill the prescription. Other similar products such as pentyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite are available for purchase without prescription. Fair warning to anyone reading this pentyl is known to be unsafe and there hasnt been enough testing to conclusively say isobutyl is. Pentyl has been linked to vision loss and possibly cancer.

The jar with the anode you should have sodium bromide in 3M sulfuric acid with jar in ice bath. Sulfuric acid reduces bromine solubility and the cold conditions will keep bromine at bottom of cell possibly freezing it solid!

I’m not what aspect of your channel I cherish most, the fact that you mostly use easily obtained starting materials, or the general aesthetics and ambiance of your presentation! I do admit that more than one occasion I sat down at 7 am in front of my 65 inch television watching your videos while scarfing down an omelette, bacon and hash browns. I do learn plenty but sometimes I just watch for entertainment value

I am wanting to make a lab for my students where they will make Prussian blue paint from iron nails. They will use electrolysis to speed up the rusting process but the problem comes when I add the rust to the HCl (1 molar) it only gives me this brown sludge versus the light yellow solution you are getting for Iron Chloride. Any ideas?
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry 5 күн бұрын
Yes actually! Iron is super finicky, and using electrolysis to produce rust will yield brown oxy-hydroxides that are very tough to dissolve. I'd actually suggest just you forgo HCl and conduct the electrolysis directly in vinegar or dilute sulfuric acid to make ferric sulfate or acetate. Alternatively you just just toss some steel wool in a beaker of vinegar and wait a few days

Thank you for explaining the two temperature reactions that occur with Sulfuric acid. Other chemist channels gloss over this and just say “heat to 210 degrees. C” and don’t mention the lower temperature reactions that occur
