Small correction. Amyl nitrate is a controlled substance in the usa. You canot get it without a prescription. And good luck finding someone to fullfill the prescription. Other similar products such as pentyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite are available for purchase without prescription. Fair warning to anyone reading this pentyl is known to be unsafe and there hasnt been enough testing to conclusively say isobutyl is. Pentyl has been linked to vision loss and possibly cancer.

I am wanting to make a lab for my students where they will make Prussian blue paint from iron nails. They will use electrolysis to speed up the rusting process but the problem comes when I add the rust to the HCl (1 molar) it only gives me this brown sludge versus the light yellow solution you are getting for Iron Chloride. Any ideas?
