re platform height, you will find the peco track spacing gauge is also sets the correct height for a 4mm platform

I was wondering how this was going, to work out, but I get the idea now. Make the raised section first and then blend the surrounding areas into the raised section. I will continue to watch with interest. Martin. (Thailand)

Interesting, Julian. My immediate thoughts (as you asked for thoughts) were: 1. Yes, move the station building down as you suggested, and as in the video thumbnail. 2. You can't model the whole setting of the station, so could you accept that you're not modelling the street, and accept that much of the street in front of the station building is "off scene" - that would allow you to retain the proportions of the building and canopy, and leave a bit more space at the platform edge. 3. As per 2, but could you construct a sort of lift-off lid for what I presume is your programming track, and put the road surface (and/or widened pavement) on that? That would give you more space for the platform, and disguise the programming track when it's not in use. Obviously doesn't work if what I'm assuming is a programming track isn't, and needs to stay exposed. PS: if you hadn't mentioned the rain, I'd have guessed the noise was trains running in the background!

Hi Julian. Good and interesting video of how you have gone about raising the ground height in the station area. I think that the station building is probably best placed roughly where you had it last shown in the video, rather than near it's original position. Yeah it's probably best to move the canopy support columns back a little. I know that you are trying to make the building and canopy as accurate as possible, but sometimes you have to compromise and modify things slightly, so that they fit in with your particular layout and the space that you have available. At the end of the day though, it is your layout and your rules, so go with whatever you think best. Judging by the photos of the original station platforms, they look like they are made of some kind of stone or stone block, in imperial sizes? But I could be wrong on that, so don't take my word for it. Best wishes. Mark.

if you have an air compressor you might find a 24 swg headless pin nailer would be useful, once the pins go in they are almost invisible, but are great to hold parts while the glue sets.

i would have been tempted to widen the canopy so that it spanned the track as a semi-trainshed. The the cast iron columns would then be between the tracks and not present a clearence issue or make the platform look cluttered This arrangement was used by the LNWR and has the advantage of sheltering the passengers from the rain. Just an observation...

The idea to to represent the station a close as possible to the original station but also work in with the Station Road layout. The original station didn't have canopy post in between the tracks.

Great video. With regards the canopy posts I have a railway rule book and in it there are drawings of the platform in profile..as long as the base of the posts are 6 foot (24mm in 00) from the edge of the edging stones of the platform your within the railway rules and true to prototype.

Back ground trains running - oh wait, it was raining on a tin roof LOL. As for bricks (platform faces), remember when built the bricks would have been imperial sizes, not the present metric skinny things. I believe they were 9 x 4.5 x 3.5 inches, going by my pre-1960 bungalow. (Metric bricks became widely used in the UK about 1970).

Is there any reason you couldn’t leave out the bar building and abandoned basement across the street? Then you could make the area across the street fit in with the Old Station Renovation building’s general land features. I’ve been following Gil and Laura’s channel since the beginning and was delighted to learn of the cooperative effort with your channel.

Loosing the pub and demolition site isn't really an option. Not because they can't be moved, but because this area is a little more precious to me, particularly the demolition site with the excavated basement and a few opportunists nicking bricks. There's a story to this scene that I don't want to loose, and there isn't anywhere else to put it on the layout. The other aspect to consider is the original station had several sidings including a cattle dock which would take up far more room than the layout allows.

I'd put the station building towards the other end of the platform where the road widens, Julian. Leaving it in its original position makes it look too overcrowded with buildings there. I'm not sure of the purpose of that siding by the station entrance. It cramps things somewhat, so it might be worth removing as, to me, it doesn't look right.
@StationRoadModelRailway2 күн бұрын
It is a test/programming track and it's on its own base attached to the side of the main baseboard. In other words, it's not occupying baseboard space.

The pedestrian bridge to the other platform looks pretty big in comparison to the new station building for me (maybe i'm the only one). From my point of view it might look better on the site of the old station building to get some space in-between. Anyway, it looks great. I just wanted to mention it. 🙂

When the projects progresses further, I'll probably review final positions of elements, as I do agree the footbridge does seem a little crowded where I've currently positioned it.

Hi . A quick suggestion . I take it the rail behind the station is your test track . Why not remove it and use the extra area to move the station building further from the platform edge . I really enjoy watching you building this layout . ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Julian, I can't remember what year or era you are modeling but I noticed that you had zig zag lines either side of your pedestrian crossing, but these didn't come into being until the mid 1970s so if you are modeling the 1960s early 1970s these would not be there. Just an observation, it's a great model railway and the accurate station building is a great addition.
@StationRoadModelRailway2 күн бұрын
Late 1950's to early 1970's, but it's not a hard and fast rule. I have some locomotives that weren't introduced until the mid 70's.

Lots of very useful tips and advice as ever, Julian, thank you. Lift-out sections for scenic dioramas is something I need to try. One minor question - I think a prototypical barrow crossing would have been at the viaduct/tunnel end of the platforms as a walking route across straight line tracks is less dangerous than across sets of points? If so, that might then influence placing of the building and the footbridge.
@StationRoadModelRailway2 күн бұрын
I did research barrow crossings and came across a number of examples that traverse point work, some quite complex too.

Looking good. Your gut instinct station building placement, looks right to me. That said (and you might have covered this before), were you considering putting a replica of the other building to the side (oil/lamp room, store?), in the open area there now, opposite the pub?
@StationRoadModelRailway2 күн бұрын
The lamps and coals building will be positioned as it is with the original station, so to the left of the main station building when looking from the platform.

@@StationRoadModelRailway Thanks for that. By (sort of) coincidence, in the latest Railway Bylines magazine here in UK (Vol. 30; Issue 2; January 2025) on page 85, there is a large (full page) B&W shot of Efail Isaf station, taken on 16th July 1959. This was the northern-most of the three 'identical' stations on that line and it actually had four tracks through the station (the two central lines for uninterrupted through-running and then the platform roads were diverted off them, on each side). As a result, it's pedestrian bridge is even longer than that at your station, in order to span the significantly larger gap between the 'Up' and 'Down' line platforms. The photo is taken looking North, from the platform across the from the main station, encompassing almost the entire pedestrian bridge (the station now has no platform canopy). Interestingly, there is a sign on the bridge on that far side platform (just where the railings curve down towards the main steps on that side) which says, 'Passengers Must Cross The Line By The Bridge'. In a much earlier image I found online, it appears that the same sign was originally hung, suspended under the bridge itself, above the platform. Other images also seem to show that the sign in question, was only ever on that side of the tracks and was only on that side of the bridge there (facing South), and not repeated on the main station side.

Julian have sent you some detail sections through platforms via messenger as I can’t post images onto KZbin. 915 is the correct height although technically it is 915plus or minus 15 mm the geometry of U.K. railways is a conversion from the older feet and inches measurement and only now are the dimensions starting to to round up as en example clear between rails was 1432mm although this is now referred to as 1535mm

I know I am pedantic but you are working on a "station building". A "station" is the whole area that a "Station Master" is in charge of.
