It’s mad to think what Joss could have done with today’s training, nutritional science and gear… he seemed like he never bothered to rest or eat half the time! Madness.

I wish ovett would have prioritized the 800m and did less mileage and more speed and strength work. I think he would have run sub 1.42 had he not focused on the 1500m/mile. He won the 400m English schools championships as a 16 year old and was a big barrel chested strapping athlete who used his size to get out of trouble in tactical races like the 800m in Moscow, he did ALOT of pushing and manhandling in that race and came close to doing a bit too much.

"I don't know how the Pommie guys train when it gets this cold" LOL Maybe he asked Charlie Spedding a year later (who beat him in the Olympic marathon, just as he did at Seoul 88).

Ovetts career is forever intertwined with Coes, given their rivalry. Like others here have said Ovett seemed to be a more natural talent whereas Coe seemed to be the product of hard (better?) training. Im sure both of them worked very hard to achieve their great success. Both of them were great athletes. Ovetts personality make him a more compelling character, i think.

I liked Cram the best, then Coe. Ovett was a bit before my time and because of his celebrations I got the impression he was a bit cocky. He was a class athlete though.

Alberto Salazar's last world class level finish in a race. He literally fell of the athletic cliff after this and became an average runner whom could no longer compete at the world class level. The Boston Marathon race of 1982 really impacted him, even though he did win the NY Marathon that fall, his 3rd straight win. So interesting to fall off so quickly, like he aged 10 years in just a few months. I was a huge Salazar fan back in the early 80's and I was so surprised when he lost the Rotterdam race. He was such a cocky and confident young man, but then in a flash he became mortal! I actually met him once. He was at this running clinic before the Twins City Marathon in 1993. He didn't run, Ed Eyestone and Lisa Weidenbach were the winners, I ran my first marathon and was happy to break 4 hours, hehehe. But I Alberton at the clinic how much he inspired me and he signed an autograph. He seemed very nice and smiling all the time. Made my day, to meet my idol ❤

If I could ask Steve Ovett one question, it would be: which is harder - the last lap of the hardest 1500m you ever ran or commentating a 50k race walk?

I was there on the day he did this. I was, in my mind, a fairly fit 34 year old doing the Buttermere horseshoe as a jog. Having done a few half marathons I thought it would be easy. It wasn't - my running partner kept having to wait for me and we kept coming across people with binoculars looking at the hills. We asked what was happening and they explained Joss is doing his 60 at 60. This meant nothing to us but it sounded so impressive. Years later, through Richard Askwith's book (Feet in the clouds) I understood what an amazing character he was. I recently did my own 60 at 60 but it was 60k just after my 60th birthday including a couple of laps of the Round Sheffield Run. Great fun - but nothing like what Joss managed!

I thought modern social media was a bad thing but watching this I realised the media was worse then. The athletes couldn’t dictate their own narrative, it was the media that controlled what was said not the athlete. Now athletes can have their own voice, their own channel and can put their image out there on their own terms and the media can’t shape or control it as much. In the past they were dependent on the media and had to do what they wanted to have a favourable image portrayed. Just a thought….

I love these old XC races. These races from the late 70,s to the Ngugi era are my favorite. Things really were not as interesting since the end of the the end of the Tergat era. My two favorite runners of all time in cross is Lopez and Ngugi. Ngugi looked like he was jogging as he cranked out 2:54 per k. Lots of respect for Pat Porter. He was an American that really put up a great fight every time he hit the grass.

I've watched this many a time especially when I need some motivation and inspiration. Great to hear Joss's appreciation for the natural world at finish mentioning the May blossom and so on. I spoke to him for a while at one of the mountain trials. Not once did he mention himself or his achievements. He just gave encouragement and sound advice. Totally selfless. I have utter respect and admiration for the old guard. Keep moving forward Joss.....
