This is one of the best sports commentators I've ever heard.

Zola Budd was such a magnificent cross country runner. In 1986 she ran barefoot slipping and sliding through the mud and still destroyed the field.

Later that year, Lopez went on to win gold in the Olympic marathon and Steve Jones went on to break the marathon world record.

Yep. And approximately one year after Lopes won the World XC title in New Jersey, he did so again in his homeland of Portugal. Before retiring, he became the first man to run the marathon in under 2:08, at Rotterdam.

Does anyone know why Tim Hutchings [ENG] did so poorly in the 1986 race? He'd won the English national already that year, over 9miles, was second in the World race in '84, again in '89 and a few weeks later, he massacred domestic competition over 1500m and 8k on the same weekend.

That was Pat Porter for you. In the US, he was usually able to run away from the field that way (in cross-country), not so against the rest of the world...He was a bit like a cross-country version of Johnny Gray...
@lukenorth71272 жыл бұрын
@@WithBACON Good analogy. Johnny Gray or Steve Prefonfaine. Although, Pre got away with that sometimes on the track.
