Super Fu**en fantastic video. I made a short video telling people why their vintage guitar doesn't sound like the original artists. It's not the guitar, it's the strings. Keep making great videos like this. Thank you.

I tried two guitars with laurel fretboards, and they are just not smooth enough to justify the price. For that price, it should be rosewood.

After fuc$%ng with Rics for decades, the best sound IMO is with vintage toasters & modded wiring. I'm not a big fan of the stock ~330K pots, or the "vintage" wiring with the 0.0047uf cap on the treble pickup. It you run vintage toasters with a 1Meg volume pot on the bridge & ~500K on the neck, it brightens things up over a good frequency range & gives more output amplitude, which sounds better to my ears. If you run your Ric with fuzz, linear pots can give a better range of cleanup when rolling off your volume.

It is surprising to note that 11 is already the lightest. I can't play that gauge at all.

Kudos! A very worthy video. Paul McCartney was asked what type of bass strings he preferred and was quoted that he wanted some "shiny" ones. Guitar string brands, gauges and even guitar cables were often overlooked when it came to an artist's sound. Scotty Moore once quoted that there were no such thing as light gauge strings back in the day. You just dealt with what the factories put on their instruments.

Slightly related: Hendrix had some VERY interesting string gauges on his guitars. It's an interesting subject. His low E was a .36

Yes! He used fender rock and roll which were a .010-.038 set! Fender now makes the Voodoo strings that replicates that gauging.

@@guitargearconnection I have one of those 2014 Hendrix Strats and I set it up for those strings. They feel funny of course, but the tone really is remarkably even compared to a standard 10 set. It really does work. This video was GREAT by the way! I'm a guitar tech and massive Beatles fan, but I've never really been able to find a ton of info about their strings. This was super interesting to watch. Crazy to think that they barely ever changed their stings unless one broke. Lol

George would trade the 2 bottom strings on some guitars with the more easily bendable banjo strings Clapton gave him, starting in late '64. Great video

The EQ could be set up to where the SG sounds better! But in this test at these settings the Casino clearly has it!

The slide is the better question. You can't slide your fingers over the frets and get a slide sound on any of those guitars. I have often thought that certain song parts almost seemed dubbed by studio musicians after the recording and weren't performed by any of the Beatles. That's one example, the lead on Till There Was You is another. Yes, George played those live, but when live it didn't sound close to the studio version, less polished, not more, which, over time should have gotten smoother from repeatedly playing.

I just came up with a good idea on the Philips head screw on John's Bigsby. Instead of trying to change it over just get a Dremel tool and make an X on the bolt head that is already on there.

I remember the red wrap on my Framus cheap archtop my dad bought me in Germany. After moving back to the US in '67, the fuzzy strings were still around for awhile. Black Diamond was king after that.

Really nice demonstration! You have to have much respect for JL playing all those awkward chord fingerings on those songs. I don't know what amp settings were used to get these cutting and bright tones, but it sounds very authentic. This guitar is a must for anyone playing in a tribute band.

Ceramic is the real deal. I next preferred the Tusq overall - close to original, yet good sounding. The Reissue is OK, but I preferred the Tusq. Bone comes in last on my scorecard. Sometimes it was close, but overall not the right sound - good, but not what you are looking for. I had one of those ceramic saddles on a Gibson LG-0 model. So long ago, I cannot say how it sounded, but it is a small body, more like a concert size than a dreadnought size - all mahogany body, top and all. Played more like a truck with medium gauge strings than a car with lighter strings. I would have set it up very differently today. Still, that ceramic saddle was a big feature in how it looked and sounded. Just saying. Nice vid, but you did not indicate your take in an obvious way ... interesting finish. Thanks. JR
