Legendary job with the modding Paul! Even though I’m not the biggest fan of SGs, there’s no denying their effect on music as a whole and many of my favourite bands/guitarist play em. Really enjoyed seeing the different mods you did when upgrading the SG to vintage spec. Definitely reckon it was worth it as it looks absolutely stunning!

There he is! Thanks Luke! Yeah me too I wasn’t a big fan of them. But sold a few old guitars and got this one so cheap off FB marketplace. Now I’m in love and kinda feel like I missed out on not getting one sooner! Thanks again Luke!

@@guitargearconnection in all seriousness, I bought my SG new in 2019, one of the first ones they made under the new series. I sent in the warranty card. Apparently, it’s a lifetime warranty, so I’m not modding it in any way. You bought yours secondhand, yes? If so, secondhand models are perfect for modding!

@@JacobKMusics yup! Scored it on FB market place pretty cheap. But I don’t blame you at all for not modding it and keeping the warranty alive!

@@guitargearconnection People never register their guitars on databases or submit the warranties, but I always do. You never know when you might need them! I’m not a modder, so that’s why I do it, I guess

Dude, The sound difference you spoke of has to be shown! I'm super curious now!! Btw love the pick guard and truss rod cover upgrades, what a difference! very tempted to make a few changes myself, I wish I could find better quality double ring tuners

Fyi, Dan at mojo axe can make the usa pick guard with between pickup screw holes and spacing vintage correct. Youll have extra holes under the guard, but youll never see it. Goes a long way for the look.. Also, the knobs are a must. When you see them in prson next to the modern ones youll see. If youre going this far you should really think about it. For the headstock, it would be an easy fix for me to level, and spray an aged nitro coat oflver the peg head face, to do two things: fix the divots, and give a yellowed, aged tinge

Excellent video as always! I’d highly recommend OX4 PAF humbuckers. I put them in my les paul and they are much more vintage accurate than the burstbuckers that came with it Other little aesthetic things that help- change the pickup position switch tip to an amber one (if it came with a white one). Add knob pointers if it didn’t come with those Lastly, I’ve noticed reissues like my epi casino have a very white headstock logo, whereas vintage Gibson or epi logos were a little greener or more brownish. Possible to rub tobacco juice or something to darken it up?

You want more authentic, you can switch the Chrome hardware for Nickel hardware. Those early SGs had nickel which made the metal look cloudy. The new ones are all super shiny with the chrome
@thecaveofthedead
@thecaveofthedead 14 күн бұрын
I was going to say this. The chrome is fine and the aesthetics of it are completely personal. And '65 SGs had chrome I believe. But I do think the graceful ageing of nickel is better than the mirror shine of chrome personally. It definitely adds a more vintage look.

I actually prefer the nylon saddles ... takes out some of the bright brittleness. And I would say, if you wanted a REAL bridge upgrade, go to Callaham Guitars and buy one of his solid steel bridges made out of a block of cold rolled steel ... the sound just jumps off the guitar with those. Unfortunately, he no longer makes them and no one else has had sense enough to fill the gap. The standard and most copies of the ABR-1 is made of soft, mushy zinc which dampens the vibrations. Nice guitar. Wow.

Just like Sam commented OX4 pickups make some pretty vintage sounding pickups. You can also choose to splurge on some pair of Throbaks. They’re probably some of the most vintage accurate PAF style pickups around. They have the same pickups winders that Gibson used in the 60s. You should make more videos with AC 100s or 50 you have back there. They’re pretty rare amps and I think they’re very cool and interesting amps.

Thank you! I ended up going with Fralin Pure PAFs. I did hear good things about OX4s, but real negative on Throbaks. I guess the owner deletes any review that isn’t a 5 star, along with them being overpriced. But I don’t have any experience with them, that’s what I’m seeing other purchasers say. I also just picked up a set of Custombuckers I plan on switching around.

Good job! I'd only add that: 1. Dimarzio makes tall black pickup rings that are a close copy of the M-69 ring and are a lot cheaper. 2. Schaller repro double-ring tuners would be another option. They have a better gear ratio than either Klusons or the Gibson Deluxe tuners. 3. The Mojotone pickguard is pricey but worth it. $40 for a TRD is a bit much, though.

Very cool, thnks for sharing this. I was never and SG fan but found and Epi SG on Craigslist, with OHSC in really good conditon for $200. Just for fun I threw on an low cost but still pretty nice Vibrola copy. For what it is, I really like it and now I want a full blown Gibson SG. Might even have to follow your lead on these mods. One question, to me it looks like GH's SG did not have the words Rhythm/Treble on the toggle ring--what's your take?
@guitargearconnection
@guitargearconnection 10 ай бұрын
There’s an early black and white photo of George with it and you can see the Rhythm/Treble labeling there. I think it wore off though just shortly after though and definitely becomes less visible. I thank you for you kind words and that’s an awesome steal for that epiphone!!!

Hi, I own a 2016 sg standard with the standard batwing pickguard. Do you think switching from the big guard to the small one is feasibile? Is it too much work?😅

I’ve seen a few do it! It’s just filling the leftover screw holes. Some do leave them there and it isn’t that noticeable

I have the same production run SG. The Maestro is a horrible excuse for the original. Nothing about it is correct. The soap dish, on the repro, is far too thick and made of low quality steel. A micrometer will show you but your eye can plainly see it. The original vintage soap dish is much thinner and far better quality spring steel. That alone changes the tone substantially. The Vanity plate screws are wrong in placement. The early production bridge saddle originally had a specially beveled knife-edged bottom that allowed it to rock to and fro on the height adjustment thumb wheels with more clearance in adjustment post holes, improving staying in tune when used...not a flat bottomed saddle lying flat on the those wheels. That is not a dive bomber vibrato. The string comb is rarely parallel to the strings and will often sag from use(poor metal choice), fatally reducing string break angle on the B & E often slipping out of their saddles. The vibrato arm is far too thick and poorly angled making it almost useless and hard to fit back into the case. The truss rod is soft and often needs tightening even with standard factory gauged strings. Gibson should be ashamed of themselves calling that a reproduction. It's basically a counterfeit. I asked Gibson for help and they got snotty with me. My SG was a gift and that makes me not the original purchaser. Gibson won't stand behind their product. I ended up putting an original '64 Vibrola on mine. Just my 3 cents.
