Having a traditional rc tire design with a foam insert will really help with grip - makes for a bigger contact patch as it allows the carcass to conform to the surface much more. In my own experience, I could never get my urethane cast tires to go as fast around the track as off the shelf race tires - both dirt tracks and carpet tracks. Though I was using the vytaflex urethane - mostly because according to slot car guys that was the faster of the two. Maybe I should return to the project and try reoflex.

I believe the way your explaining how the Fanuc controller calls for the encoder value of specific axis's when needed. That sounds like the most efficient way to do it. Since at any given time a command move may only require 1 or 2 of the available 6 or 7 axis to move so why would you want to carry the overhead of data communications from the delta of servo motor/encoders not needed when you already know where those joints /encoder counts will end up anyway right ? I like your proposed FPGA architecture. That is certainly the way to go today and like you said keeps the hardware always expandable. FPGA's are the future of all electronics. Software defined control law and FPGA. Great work ! Thank you. J

Although I like the project ..... I think you guys are trying to reinvent the wheel here. Creating a d developing new control law IP is an extremely difficult thing to achieve. Leave how the robot axis's get from point a to b to Fanuc and the rest of the existing numerical control law motor control Industry... Look one layer above the motor control layer of all industrial robots and Cobots and ask yourself what are the various top use case applications and challenges that the existing industrial robot and Cobot manufactures have yet to develop solution for ?? So on these areas which innovations would be the most rewarding and encompassing to truly be a game changer ?? Smooth and precise control law without over or undershoot is extremely difficult and can be done in many ways. My point is it's already been done. So perhaps we focus on higher fruit on the tree...developing software and hardware solutions for new larger use case applications for robots and Cobots , make software and hardware solutions that make the customization, programming and implementation of robots and Cobots easier quicker and cheaper, There is a ton of additional innovations over and above motor control. We have created software that runs on top of all Fanuc Robot and Cobots controllers which does exactly this for washing cars and trucks out of the box. Additionally I own a patent for a software defined marine auto pilot control system which does not use a PID controller which is extremely impressive. Let me know if you folks here are interested in anything. I may want to make the marine autopilot control law IP open source which would be a huge disruptive technology change on the existing closed proprietary marine electronics industry. Its global market cap is a $5 billion dollar a year value.. thank you. John

A little surprised to see no mention of the fact that most tires are not solid, but in fact hollow, which has huge differences due to their self-damping abilities, i.e., a tire that's experiencing a pressure hotspot can deform there and evenly distribute the pressure over a larger surface area / contact point with the ground, thereby increasing traction and decreasing wear. Similarly, when going over anything other than perfectly flat terrain (such as gravel, grass, etc) any rock or other object sticking up from the surface can be deformed around like a glove, causing the hollow tire to not spin out or lose traction over loose rubble and such.

Which Flex Seal Spray did you use? Do you have long-term experience with this? Your video was very interesting, even though I don't have a model car. I looked at it more because I'm interested in more weather-resistant parts than purely 3D printed ones.

I think you were missing an ABS without flex spray for a control for the abs, instead of comparing to the PLA, since they have very different properties.

A good way to spread microplastics everywhere you drive your rc car. There probably needs to be a more durable outer coat to prevent plastic shredding. Though it cant be blamed too much after all even normal car tires generate microplastic.

I am building (well built 1st gen with many fixes but still to powerful for 3d printed shafts) a mostly 3d printed tracked vehicle. Found someone using VytaFlex 60 in a video for tires and it rocks. I went through so many options from PLA, silicone, shoegoo like stuff, gluing on tpu tracks, and finally direct casting in contact with PLA track segments of the VytaFlex 60. This works insanely well. After use on pavement it looks and feels kind of like bicycle tire rubber. If you ever revisit, I'd suggest this as a

I imagine the lack of spring/travel within the actual grip material unlike the original tire was the main problem. I imagine all of the designs need an air spring between the outer layer and the rim.

I'm wondering if you could use the properties of multi filament to print your wheel hub and mold all in one using the properties that PLA and ABS don't really like to stick to each other then break away the mold but it would be only one time use

This is awesome! Would love to see a hollow tire made with urethane and a foam insert like rc tires would compare to regular rc tires. Did you have any problems with the resin leaking into the 3d printed mold when under pressure? Just watched Punished Props vid where he has that problem. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting. The material boned to a harder material doesn't have the opportunity to flex and cause heat which causes more traction. Your attention to detail with moulding is awesome!. Great video.
@Programentalist
@Programentalist Ай бұрын
Yeah that's likely a big factor, not only cannot the contact patch deform much at all, there's essentially a rigid sidewall as well, both of which are very bad for overall grip. The lack of spring/give in the tire is likely a factor as well due to similar reasons (ie it bounces off the surface instead of "eating up" uneven surfaces).

Punished Props just released a video where they made their own tires, too. It's interesting to see the difference in workflow based on area of expertise! They printed the full tire, post-processed it for cosmetics, then made a silicone mold and used that to cast the tires (with a 3D printed hub). They prioritized cosmetics over function, so maybe avoiding the mold lines on the front of the tire was more important to them, but I really like the idea of a 3d printed mold

FAQ: What is the cost per tire? Plain PLA: $1.6 ABS + Flexseal: $1.6 + $16 for a can of Flexseal, should last for 10+ tires PLA + TPU: $5.6 Urethane: $6 Can this work for non-solid tires also? Yes, it's just a lot more challenging to make a mold that lets you cast a hollow tread section. Smoothon also sells 2 part urethane foam that could be used to make foam or foam filled tires
