Definitely the misconception of Latin America and CHEAP ends in Uruguay. A country w wonderful beaches w a variety of options for those who r looking for more than a stamp in their passport. Dig online a little and as an educated traveler u won’t b disappointed. In Montevideo 25 kms of rambla for outdoor activities or just sit and relax, the capital has a Casino, many restaurants w influence from Spain, Italy, France and Portugal. Uruguay is opening its doors to a new era of immigrants from Mexico, Colombia, India, etc that r adding more richness to the gastronomy. There r also bars and clubs for enthusiasts. Colonia del Sacramento a couple of hours away is another wonderful place. Again dig online and u’ll c. In Maldonado, Punta del Este is a gem that u can’t miss. W the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the place offers two kind of beaches Playa Mansa and Playa Brava, b aware sea lions there! Cabo Polonio in Rocha wow! And the beaches there r also amazing, also a sea lions colony. Trekking is an option in the region w guides and proper gear available (rent). So many things to do! I’m disappointed w travelers and their narrow expectations, being happy w an alfajor for less than $1. (WTF!) Again Latin America - Uruguay and cheap don’t go together, if that’s what u r looking for stay away from Uruguay!
@lifetheorycouple10 күн бұрын
Thank you! - I know we said it was expensive quite a few times, comparatively to other Latin American cities/countries. But we did really enjoy it. And overall, although more expensive, Montevideo was more peaceful and felt much safer than many other Latin American cities and places we have visited. I think that is the tradeoff really. Even though we mostly walked around, nearly the whole city, and stayed in a budget-option accommodation, we have no regrets, it was still a great experience. This video was simply our experience checking out the city and our initial thoughts. --- Next time we visit Uruguay, we'll likely show up ready to spend more money. --- The alfajor we ate was like $5.00 usd and better than any we had in BA.

My wife is from Bogota and I have been there 12 times so far, and I totally concur with everything in the video! You really only scratched the surface as far as everything that Bogota has to offer. I have also been to other parts of Colombia. As far as daily living, they have Price Smart, which is like Costco in the states, they have Exito which is like Walmart, and Juan Valdez is exactly like Starbucks, although Starbucks also exists in Colombia. I will be moving to Colombia when I retire, but probably not in Bogota, as it's a little too crazy for me. If I did choose to live in Bogota, it would be in the north end of the city, like Usaquen for example. It will almost certainly be somewhere near Bogota, though.

@lifetheorycouple10 күн бұрын
We felt it was like a small town. Some parts seemed more dangerous than others... We were in a decent area, but people would rob pedestrians who were just walking through park... They'd hide in the bushes/greenery... So, if you want to take a casual walk... Leave the phone behind, just carry some cash you're willing to lose... As far as the trails, they felt very safe and there were plenty of people going up and down them for recreational activity.

We do not have much experience with this. We are both cautious people... Our love story started in the US where we met in person for the first time... We've heard a lot of horror stories about gringos getting robbed and drugged... If the girl you're talking to does not introduce you to their family, I'd say within 1 or 2 months, it's probably a bad sign. Colombians are very connect to their families more than Americans.

Has inflation hit Colombia (and Latin America in general) hard in 2024?
@lifetheorycouple20 күн бұрын
This is difficult to say... We are no experts on inflation... But we do believe inflation impacts different countries and sub markets in a variety of different ways... For example, interest rates are about 9% in Colombia right now. Making it difficult for businesses and individuals to take out loans... The El Nino effect was happening late 2023 and early 2024... This caused droughts... And the years before that the La Nina effect was occurring causing floods and landslides... Those climatic type of impacts tend to raise food prices because it disruptions food production and distribution. --- As far as the US goes.. I would make the argument that NIMBY culture is the major cause of inflation in the US. LOL --- In general, with all this said, we don't base our decisions based on inflation, we base it on how we feel about a place and our daily routines/life.
@harjokars18 күн бұрын
I spent half my time in Colombia and the other half in Europe for the past 5 years. Yes there is inflation in pesos, but generally this is offset by the peso becoming equally less valuable against the Euro/Dollar. The inflation was 4.5% per year on average until 2022, but in 2022 it was 10 % due to aftershocks of the pandemic, However this was largely offset by decline in the value of the pesos. In general Colombia is not dirt cheap, but affordable. Local products are off course considerably cheaper than imports. Things that are considerably cheaper than in the U.S. and Europe are meat, taxis and cigarettes. Montlhy rent highly depends on the city and neighboorhood and as a foreigner you want to be in a good neighboorhood for security reasons, unless you can blend in because you're latino and speak Spanish.

Many companies in the USA are driving their employees to return to the office and are putting the brakes on remote work. The company cultures are changing post-COVID.
@lifetheorycouple20 күн бұрын
This is true. The company we worked for was not forcing anyone back to the office if their job could be done from home... But, we were some of the only ones outside of the country... lol - I know a big perk for many was having the ability to go spend a few weeks or month in their home countries... Something I think most companies should highly consider for remote work positions.
@waynekaminski543817 күн бұрын
@@lifetheorycouple My experience was in a position that absolutely required my presence on site, but I tolerated the commute in the SF/Bay Area because the work was both challenging and very productive. However, in 2020, the pandemic forced me to work from home every other week, while the week I had to be at work was also moved to an office that could be considered "off-site". This caused me to slow down, not be so ultra focused and this opened my view towards retirement, which was perfectly timed in regard to my company's restructuring. When I was offered a sweet package, I took it. My last day of work was Jan. 11, 2021. Best decision for me after 40 years of working for one company as an automation consultant.

The best in saturdays is going in the transmilenio, that day there's no rush hour for the system, and is the fastest one, cause of its own traffic lane. The mobility is going forward with the metro 1rst line (in construction) and second one (bidding process), the second aerial cable line (San Cristobal) in preconstruction state and the occidental regiotram starting construction in 2025, connecting downtown to the metropolitan area of that sector. The people of Bogota is the most open minded of the country, the vanguard of intellectual and art movement, all of the ones coming from all the regions of Colombia are accepted as equals in the different sectors of the economy.
