In MJ's best year he still didn't beat Bird's stats. I don't think you can really compare Bird to anyone. There has never been a player that played at the high level Bird played at with the injuries Bird had. His sophomore year of high school he broke his ankle in two places and tore the ligaments in it in the first or second practice. He used that time to practice shooting left handed. After he was drafted and before he signed with the Celtics he shattered his index finger in a softball or baseball game. I forget which. Two major surgeries with clips and pins put in it but they couldn't straighten it out so it was shaped like a boomerang at a 45 degree angle pointing towards his thumb. He said he never had the same feel for the basketball after that. The night before that game against the Pacers when he fractured his right cheek he spent in the hospital in traction. His teammates said he struggled to get dressed out for that game. Broke his back in 85. This caused him to lose the structural stability in his spine. It took 4 to 6 hours to unlock his spine, realign it and do techniques to hold it so he can then play a basketball game. You can tell in some of the games when he was wearing a fiberglass body brace. He fractured his eye orbiter in a game and still finished the game shooting with double vision. He had a hole kicked in his face and after he finished playing that game he had to go to the hospital and they had to drill a hole in his face to pop the arch back out. He had a broken foot, bone spurs and double Achilles surgery in 89 and still went out and put up numbers some great players could only imagine. He didn't like to let anyone know he was hurt. He had a toe infection and before a game they had to cut 2 1/2 inches between his toes to drain the infection and he wrapped it up and played that game. His back injury was so bad he had to lay down on planes. And according to his teammates he never in his career took pills, shots or pain blockers. Today a player's uncle could get hurt and they'll set out the game. Larry Bird is in a box all alone. He said himself, If you get paid to go to work you've got to go to work. May I suggest you watch more Larry Bird videos and then see what you think. Danny Ainge said Larry was practicing before a game and Danny asked why he was shooting the way he was and Larry told him his Achilles tendons were bothering him so much his step back wasn't going to work. That was who he was. He was coming up with another game plan for a win. In one game after the first 3 quarters he was one steal away from a quadruple double and sat out the forth quarter. The coach realized it and tried to get him to go back in the game and he said no, that he'd already done enough damage. He cared about the numbers on the score board not the stats. He made his team better and the teams that played against him. His basketball IQ was off the charts. Larry Bird stands alone. They'll never be another player like Larry Bird. He absolutely is the GOAT.

Whatever…as Bird was a complete team player..Wilt Chamberlain …still has 73 records on the record book…other have had big games…but Wilt scored 100 against the New York Knicks..in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1962…but he was stuck at 98 for a couple of minutes cuz he was trying too hard…finally with about 30 seconds left…he tipped it back in for his 100 points…as bad of a free throw shooter he was…that night Wilt was 28 of 32…and that year averaged per game 50.2 points…I am from Kansas and Wilt played for Kansas…but Wilt would typically average 40 points and 25 boards…with a sweet 12 to 15 foot jump shot…as a seven footer…

First Bird was a complete team player..1980 Rookie of the Year…over MAGIC…3 consecutive MVP’s along with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain…the only 3 to ever do it..DISLOCATED HIS SHOOTING HAND FOREFINGER SO BAD IT WAS BENT AT A NINETY DEGREE ANGLE toward his thumb …they could never fix it…and that was before he had signed his rookie contract..after Red Auerbach had him suit up and do some shooting and passing drill…Red said the kid is good enough…Jordan is 0-6 against Bird in the playoffs…as a coach…he was voted NBA COACH OF THE YEAR…later…NBA EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR….

Club football (NOT soccer) and National football are different things (same players, though). What is being discussed here is CLUB football; national teams (including the USA) play in the World Cup, which is held every four years (and also in Regional competitions - see the European Nations Cup later in 2014). Americans don't seem to be able to understand National teams because so many of their major sports don't have them! They consider their Club Champions to be World Champions. The rest of the world laugh at this ignorance. The lack of promotion and relegation in American sports is what makes them so boring and stale.

Larry is my # 1 having watched 80s ball live - above and beyond those others. Jordan was more athletic, Kareem had the sky hook, Magic wasn’t a clutch shooter, Larry was well rounded - best passer, best pure shooter, played smarter. Larry Legend basketball Jesus forever. It’s not about rings or MVPs

I watched that game (as a Lakers fan) with Magic's baby sky hook. I was glad the shot went in. But, every time Bird had that ball with a few seconds left even when he wasn't shooting? It was a nail-biting experience. But, I actually started watching more Celtics games and Bird after I learned Bird was a great trash talker. I mean, we (most guys) trash-talked a lot back then and not just in sports. However, I admired players that followed through and Bird was something else.

I think the “he had more help” argument is fair when talking about a potential GOAT’s number of rings. Check out Jorden in the ‘86 playoffs. GOAT performances, but Bulls lost in 3 games…

I can deny anything I want. As you are denying logic with your LeBron is better than Larry. What I can't deny is the eye test, what my eyes saw in the 80s watching Larry play, I believe whole-heartedly, and nobody could ever convince me of anything different, Larry Bird IS the GOAT of the NBA.

Think about it this way The way the "less help" argument works isn't too diminish what magic accomplished, its simply putting into context the status of the players around magic and bird. On one side, Kareem would've made the HoF with it without magic. He would've won rings with or without magic. James worthy would've had a good career with it without magic On the other side, Kevin Mchale was a bench warmer for his rookie year, and a 2nd string player until his 4th year. Robert Parish was averaging 9pts, 5 rbd and 2.4 assists until he got traded to Boston and stayed playing with Larry Bird, and just one year later he was averaging 17, 8.5, 5, basically doubling his efficiency. I have no doubt that magic would have had the same leadership effect on the Celtics and vice versa for Bird and the Lakers, but it is an undeniable fact that one made average teammates into hall of famers while the other got to play with already HoF caliber players. And while i think that Larry Bird would've gotten 5 rings on the Lakers, because of a combination of their team environment and personal playstyles, Magic would only have gotten 2 rings with Boston. Magic wasnt able to shoot from 3 and mid range like Bird was, and the lack of a true scoring threat would make it harder for Magic to pull his passes off, especially before Mchale and Parish develop. I dont think "Celtics Magic" wins the 81 championship that Bird did win, but i do think he wins in 84 and 86. And don't take this as a slight on Magic, it isn't. Its simply a consideration that his playstyle would be less successful if he was the one who had to shoot as a deep range primary scoring option

Some of the players in the course of NBA history held back on their own offensive numbers for the sake of team play, and a win, and some did not…… The other intangibles within the game, and within the attitude of the team itself are more important in any, and every team sport ever known or ever will be known.Period 🥴🤪😂🏀❤️

It’s interesting that you think MJ would average 40p-6a, and then you say that LarryBird would average a triple double with 50 p. You just admitted that LarryBird was better than MJ, and would be today too.

11:41 Sure... But he was also one of Magics closest friend... If he was bs-ing to avoid giving Jordan cred, why on earth would he give the cred to Larry instead of *_his BFF_* Magic? And as much as he hates Jordan, he wasnt very fond of Bird either.

5:50 Yea, well... When Kobe, Lebron and KD played, you couldnt *_beat your opponents to a pulp_* and not even get a technical. Im not joking, Ive seen people like Bill Laimbeer vit people in a eay that wouldve landed you 3-5 mandetory if you did it off the court. Didnt get get ejected, didnt even get a warning. Kobe, Lebron and KD *WOULD NOT* have lasted 20 seasons in the 80s. 15 tops.

If you can "include Magic" but not Bird, youre seriously sleeping. They wete basically one entity, they were eachothers mirror image. And if you HAVE to pick one over the other, 95% of people who actually saw them play and know a thing or two about the 80s would place Larry over Magic. The had the tyoe of leadership, fighting spirit, innovation and passing, they were alnost identical. The one difference was that Larry was ALSO the beat shooter in the league, miles ahead lf Magic. If Magic upped his shooting to two 50/40/90 seasons and 6 other season less than 1% away from 50/40/90. *THEN *you could say the were actual mirror images of eachother.

NGL, it doesn't make sense to me for you to say that you hate the "they had help" argument, then mention that you can't consider a player in a bubble. It's one or the other. Personally, I'm on the side that you must take into consideration those around GOAT contenders. Remember, Jordan was running over Bird in a game but still lost because despite individual greatness, Bird had a team that was superior. If you look at the win column in that game in a vacuum, you'd see Larry 1, Jordan 0. Teams must be in consideration to GOAT claims. The Chicago Bulls were still strong after Jordan retired the first time.
