Bird was a very good team defender, not so much an on-ball one-on-one defender. He made NBA All-Defensive second team three times. Also, he was one of the best players in the league right from day one, finishing 4th in MVP voting in his rookie season. As a rookie he led the Celtics to a 61 win season after they had only won 29 the year before. So, he wasn't just about putting up stats - he impacted winning.

Bird joint #1 with Jordan for me, three main reasons: 1. He's Jordans GOAT pretty much, Jordan only had nothing but respect for Larry, but I suppose that can't be helped given their personal record, coming later. 2. He's the ultimate winner, he has the second highest win% in NBA history, ever so slightly behind Magic who had more help, another GOAT candidate in Kareem, and James Worthy who got MVP in a winning team with Michael Jordan on it lol. Bird is the only player of that calibre on the Celtics at that time, yet is only behind Magic on win% by 10 games or so, about the difference in their record against eachother lol. 3. Bird and Jordans record, Bird 23 - 11 Jordan, 17-11 regulars, 6-0 playoffs! The Celtics swept Jordans Bulls 3-0 TWICE! Jordan has openly said he learned mind games from Larry, but here's the difference, Jordan put up incredible numbers against the Celtics, but more often than not lost because Larry was more of a team player who loved to involve the whole team in offense, pinpoint laser dimes and his elite shooting on top, Larry and Jordan are the two most clutch game killers there are, by a mile. It's Bird, closely followed by Jordan, a huge gap, then everyone else when it comes to that aspect of the game. I can highly recommend Larry Bird - Greatest Passer Of All Time (Re-edit with new footage), 15 minutes of sublime passing 👌.

Bird and Jordan are both the extra special players. Both were in the top three. Bird was top 2 for MVP every year from 1981-1988, the golden years for the league. Jordan scored more points, but Bird was the better overall player (scoring, assists, rebounds, basketball IQ). There is no one like Bird today, so many younger fans don’t understand what he was.

Larry and Magic are close for me but Larry could do everything Magic could do plus being the best shooter in the league. Magic has more rings but he had more help. He had Kareem and James Worthy. He also had Pat as a coach who was the best coach in the league. Going by individual talent I got Bird. If we're talking about peak Bird 84-86, no injuries , he's my number 2 behind Jordan

I'm old enough to have remembered both Bird and Magic coming into the league. Having seen what those two men did, I find it impossible to separate them. Without Larry Bird, there would not have been a Magic Johnson. Without Magic Johnson, there would not have been a Larry Legend. Both of them would have been excellent basketball players but, the competition was so fierce between them that they pushed each other to a pinnacle that still has not been reached today.

In the MVP race in his rookie season Bird received 66.97 % of the possible votes. Larry finished 2nd,2nd,2nd,1st,1st,1st, 2nd and 2nd in MVP voting from 1981 until 1988. Crazy.

Larry was a better shooter, rebounder, and had more assists than Jordan. As you read these career stats, just keep in mind, that Jordan played 2 more seasons than Bird did (175 games). Not only that, Bird played his last 4 years with debilitating injuries, and missed all but 6 games of the 88-89 season. Field goal percentage: Jordan: 49.7 Bird: 49.6 3 pointers made/attempted: Jordan: 581/1778....32.7% Bird: 649/1727....37.6% 2 pointers made/attempted: Jordan: 11,611/22,759....51% Bird: 7,942/15,607....50.9% Effective field goal percentage: Jordan: 50.9% Bird: 51.4% Free throw percentage: Jordan: 83.5% Bird: 88.6% Offensive rebounds: Jordan: 1668 Bird: 1757 Defensive rebounds: Jordan: 5004 Bird: 7217 Minutes per game: Jordan: 38.3 Bird: 38.4 Assists per game: Jordan: 5.3 Bird: 6.3 Rebounds per game: Jordan: 6.2 Bird: 10 Points per 36 minutes: Jordan: 28.3 Bird: 22.8 Rebounds per 36 minutes: Jordan:5.9 Bird: 9.4 Assists per 36 minutes: Jordan: 4.9 Bird: 6.0 Points per game: Jordan: 30.1 Bird; 24.3 Personal fouls: Jordan: 2783 Bird: 2279 Turnovers: Jordan: 2924 Bird: 2816 Blocks: Jordan: 893 Bird: 755 Steals: Jordan: 2514 Bird: 1556 Career points: Jordan: 32,292 Bird: 21,791 Again....Jordan played 15 basically healthy seasons, compared to 13 seasons for Bird, with 4 of those seasons played with a seriously bad back, leaving 9 truly healthy seasons. And those 4 injury riddled seasons, included the 88-89 season, in which he only played 6 games. He had back surgery, plus surgery on both Achilles tendons. Between 1981-1988, Larry won the League MVP 3 times in a row, and never finished below 3rd in the voting....2,2,1,1,1,3,2. In that same time period, Larry received 67% of all MVP votes cast. And like Jordan, he was in the stronger league, in the most talent rich era in NBA history. He is the only player beside Wilt and Bill Russell, to win 3 in a row (and the only player to do it that wasn't a center)....and the only player in history, to win a championship, MVP, coach of the year, and executive of the year. Bird is also the ONLY PLAYER IN HISTORY, to retire with at least a 20 pts. per game/10 reb. per game/5 assists per game average for his career (24.3/10/6.3). Bird was never the center of any drama or pettiness, and played his entire career with the Celtics, winning championships with whoever the management brought on. He is also probably one of the only players that can say that he swept Jordan out of the playoffs twice. Jordan's Bulls were 11-34 against Bird's Celtics. All things equal, and if Bird would have been healthy those other 4 years, he would have a legitimate claim as the best player ever. If I was building a team and had to pick between either player in their prime, I would pick Bird.

Larry Bird is one of the greatest team defenders of all time, and while he can still hold his own on defense against a majority of NBA players the truly elite ones could usually score on him when they turn it up. He plays smart, he knows Dominique can run right around him so he steps back and forces him to shoot. Hard to finish at the rim on a 6'10 guy whether they can jump or not. To me he is the greatest 5 on 5 player of all time, and I always pick him over any SF on my 2k teams. I kinda look at it like Klay Thompson. Clearly a 2 way player and one of the best 2 guard defenders in the league at his 6'6 height. Doesnt have the most speed especially compared to most players his height and small guards, but he knows their tendencies and what they like to do and cuts them off basically. Bird is a taller version of that, not moving his feet as quick as Klay on d but doesnt need to at his height. And he knows all about everyone on the other team. If Klay can slow prime Lebron down a little i guarantee Bird would do the same if not better.

LeBron is the best player you have seen over the last twenty years but he doesn't make my first team. Bron has a lot of weaknesses. His best year at the line isn't close to Larry's worst. The mental toughness though is the biggest difference. Bird got his team into the playoffs every season he played. His back was badly hurt in 85 and he played his last couple of seasons in a back brace under his uniform. He spent nights in the hospital in traction so he could play the next day. Boston's top draft pick in 87 died of a drug overdose and Larry felt he couldn't let his teammates down so he kept playing and winning. His drive to win was completely different from any player on the court today.

Very hard to compare... these boys from the 80's were flying commercial, sometimes didnt even have time to eat, didn't have the perks of a basketballer has these days. But to me Michael Jordan was an alien, he is a level apart over anyone else. Larry was a freak too when it came to shooting. Magic is underrated. We can' t forget these last 2 had serious health issues and probably weren't playing at even 90%. Most people only relies on stats but sports isn't only about them. Game changer players to me are what sets them apart from regular players.

Bird told all the greats at that time what he was going to do and not one person in the building could stop it. He did what he wanted when he wanted.

well to understand how insane larry is you gotta check out 5 times larry bird was injured and refused to quit. and 4 crazy stories to prove larry bird was toughest in the nba. if anyone else would have gone through what he did they would have retired early 100%

You also have to remember they didn't encourage 3 pt shots when he started. You have to watch more videos to actually be able to judge for yourself. 50 greatest passes re-edited version, making the case for Larry Bird by Clayton Crowley. Magic said Larry was the only one he feared bc if he could find a shot, he'd make it. James Worthy said that he would rather play Michael Jordan than Larry Bird bc you have to play as a thinker when you played Larry. Michael Jordan said Larry Bird was the best small forward ever. LeBrons top 3 Larry Bird, Magic MJ. Watch more videos you'll see. His basketball IQ was off the charts. Also, he was the founding member of the 50, 40, 90 club. His stats would have been even better if his back hadn't hurt so bad.

In my opinion you're overlooking a couple things while rating players. A lot of those players that you named had all-star teams to help assist them getting them rings and stacking their stats. Larry on the other hand was pretty much a one-man team for a good portion of his career. He carried the Celtics to the point where they were double and triple covering him on a regular basis, Yet he was still able to achieve what he did. You'll see it in games where he's taking out for injuries, he will leave the game with the Celtics having a big lead, while out getting treated in the locker room they lose their lead and fall way behind. Then Larry comes back out and continuously pulls off large comebacks to win the game.

If you haven't seen the college Goat look at Pete Maravich. 44.2 ppg no 3 point line and only played 3 years!!!

I'd have Jordan at #1 and Bird at #2. The rest of the line-up would depend on whether they were playing with current rules or old school rules. You didn't get Bird on your team for elite defense. You got him because he was a great shooter and he was clutch like Jordan and his drive to win was equal to Jordan.

Bird was a very good team defensive player. He led the league in DWS four seasons. 2nd place twice.

If you haven't watch making the case for Larry Bird, you might enjoy watching it. MJ has Bird in is top 5 I have to put Bird above Lebron since in order to get his championships he jumped teams to form super teams. Bird was also a better shooter

Larry is my # 1 having watched 80s ball live - above and beyond those others. Jordan was more athletic, Kareem had the sky hook, Magic wasn’t a clutch shooter, Larry was well rounded - best passer, best pure shooter, played smarter. Larry Legend basketball Jesus forever. It’s not about rings or MVPs

Bird is 3rd. Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Larry Bird. Wilt Chamberlain and Magic Johnson are right there to round out the Top 5 of all time.

Good interpretation. If you haven't already, you need to analyze Pete Maravitch with analytics. The man was a superstar of superstars. Please do.
