Why did you put the entrance on the long side instead of the short side which would be more as it is in nature?

To make Seed or Kurn for churned honey you need some of your own crystallized honey and a stone and mortar

This is cool. I have a table saw, but I would like to build this because I work in my covered no walls carport. I hate dragging everything out to work. Plus, you did a lot of work making these videos. You deserve the support.

Great video. I have Langstroth but thinking about the Layens. I am also foundation-less because I believe foundation is the cause of the mite problem.

I am also a big fan of Thomas Seeley. I cannot remember him ever mentioning to hang a swarm trap level. I realize that when we move our bees into their permanent home that we do tilt our boxes forward a bit to let water run out. I will leave my level in my toolbox 😉I LOVE your shim block!! Def using that idea. Thanks for the informative well shot, good audio KZbin videos. Now I will go and check some of your other videos 🐝🌻

I used your instructions and built 9 of these catchers and installed them in different places. So far caught 3 swarms. 33% success rate is great, I think. I guess it depends on the place. One spot was a cherry tree next to a creek. I think the bees couldn't resist. Thanks Bill.

It makes me cringe when I see food heated in plastic. The chemicals in the plastic leach right into the food and mimic estrogen in the body. Just fyi.

Some people use swarm Commander some people use a frame full of old brood comb. Some people like to spray lemongrass essential oil on the entrance and a little inside not too much.

How long does the honey stay uncrystalized for? I would think that after it has crystalizes once, it would happen much faster a second time.

I believe that with cold winters and hot summers, it might be a good idea to create a permanent layer of insulation around the outside of the standard Layen's hive between one-inch framing boards where you add the insulation made of the wool from local sheep farmers. Then have a second layer of siding outside of the entire insulation layer, similar to how we build house walls for humans, but not as thick. I think that one full inch of insulation all around the outside walls is plenty. The key issue is fixing the areas where the bee holes are and any ventilation holes with another layer of the boards and the exact thickness of the space with the hole drilled into those. This way the entire outside of the box is more like the thickness of natural trees, where even in the worst of the cold winters and the worst of the hot summers the bees would not have any problems with the heat or cold. The insulation layer would need to be fully enclosed, glued, etc. so that there is never a problem with infestation..
