Hi, thanks for the really interesting video! I only have one question: does the rules explain the historically background of the "Soviet special force" event? It seems like it is pretty impactful on the gameplay, so I was wondering if it is well historically justified. I looked online for the manual but I couldn't find it.

Interestingly, I did not get to play this classic introductory game in any of its many forms, so I am really curious about it... How would you compare it to other similar games like Velikiye Luki?
@Justegarde7 сағат бұрын
I have not played Velikiye Luki, so I don’t have a comparison point. I think once you “solve” the puzzle in Metz the replayability is probably low. Each game is going to have the same general arc, more or less.

do you know what this German rope supply system was called? I would also like to look up this but it is hard to google. some kind of cable system?
@Justegarde2 күн бұрын
The rules call it a Seilbahn, so presumably it was some kind of assembled cable car line that supplied the Arctic front from Norway. A quick google didn’t turn anything up but there must be some info about it out there.

A few things: - The counters actually fall from the sheet when you open the game. No need to punch them, no need to round corners (the counters are actually too thick to fit in a corner cutter)… just sort them and you’re good to go. - “Geb” stands for Gebirgsjäger, elite mountain units. - I found that keeping the “Out of Supply” chits under the units adds to the fog of war when playing solo.

2:38 rout move is always a straight line to map edge. This is important for terrain MP costs and traversing friendly units.
@Justegarde13 күн бұрын
Yes, but it’s kind of nebulous. The rules just say a straight line toward the specified retreat edge of the map. Does that mean always one hex closer? Does it mean literally a straight line? What about when the hex grain isn’t perfectly straight? Is it toward the single closest hex along the retreat edge? I’ve been doing the rout moves more interpretively for both sides, but there’s no example that shows specifically what is “correct”.
@MaxMustermann-sp9yq15 күн бұрын
2:27 i think the Russian cavalry make its rout move in Phase D and not immediatly.

Per 10.2, when a unit becomes routed it immediately retreats 2 hexes (if INF or ART) or 3 hexes (if CAV).

Contrary to what I said in a different comment, it does appear to be hard to find at the moment. Thats a recent development as I remember seeing it for sale on Vae Victis’ site a couple months back. Thank you for the video. Am I correct in assuming that these are reissued games that originally appeared in early Vae Victis magazine issues, and then released ina quad sort of folio? Might be tough to find a copy, though I hope I'm wrong on that. No apologies necessary for mentioning the outstanding artwork. It reflects the care and attention to detail by the publishers to their work generally. Theirs are not pretty presentations but nothing more. To the contrary.

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham was 21% losses for the French and 15% for the British.
@thewarroom9028Ай бұрын
So I did some number crunching of 7 Years War Battles. I looked at 13 major battles, not including sieges, and found that Prussian casualties per battle averaged 21%, with a high of 41% and a low of 3%. The Austrians averaged 26%, with a high of 41% and a low of 7%. In the French and Indian War it was harder to find major battles that weren't sieges but I came up with 6. The British average was 19% with a high of 29% and a low of 14%. The French were more cautious apparently with an average of 11% losses, with a high of 21% and a low of 1%.
@JustegardeАй бұрын
This is excellent, thank you. Wonder if there's a way to get this system to reflect those numbers; the Quebec battle had like 60% unit casualties at the end. The statistical difference you've found could be due to doctrine or troop type; British had a lot of regulars while the French often had a lot of supplementing light infantry and Native American forces, so could be a discrepancy in engagement style.
@thewarroom902829 күн бұрын
@@Justegarde It seems like most Army's got to the point 0f about 20% casualties and called it a day. Maybe you could make that the demoralization point with a die roll each turn to continue up to 40% if you pass. That seems to be the extreme before one side or the other quit in the battles I looked at.
@billjenkins9422Ай бұрын
Why didnt the French stay in the fortress of Quebec?
@JustegardeАй бұрын
In the game, you’re not allowed to set up there. In reality, they didn’t feel they could withstand a siege and Montcalm wanted to try and set the British back by winning a decisive battle against the majority of British forces
@billjenkins9422Ай бұрын
@@Justegarde In hindsight it would appear to have been a mistake.
@JustegardeАй бұрын
@@billjenkins9422 Yeah, but there was no way to know that at the time. I personally think losing Quebec to a siege was equally a mistake. He was dealt a bad hand and tried to get some good fortune, which realistically was his only path to victory, or at least favorable terms. The British had the St. Lawrence blockaded at the time and there was no help coming from France; they were effed in the long term.
