it seems stupid to me to make waterfoul hunters use steel shot but still continue to use plastic wadding in the shells instead of cardboard disks....plastic contamination in water is a serious issue...waterfowl eat the bits of plastic and clog up and die it happens a lot..also fish eat it and it winds up inside bald eagles and kills them...its a chain of plastic death
@mikeoutdoors2223 күн бұрын
It's a bit silly alright, the biodegradable are a lot better, they are like a tough cardboard. Iv done a few tests on them in glasses of water and after a few weeks they are all but gone. Hopefully they will come up with something better.

Another awesome Swift video! Makes me want to go out again! Here in California, we can shoot on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, which is Federal, not state land. Where we shoot is at about the 5000 feet elevation, so you can only shoot out to about 75 yards as you are in between hills, so no super long shots, unless you want to pay at some crowded range in the valley. I look forward to seeing the next video at 700 yards!
@danielwick2852Ай бұрын
I still need to work up some loads before I go out again, and see which load my rifle likes best and work towards that "one hole" rifle.
@mikeoutdoors22Ай бұрын
Cheers buddy, wow only 75 yards, that's unfortunate. I'll have to go to a range myself to get out to 700 myself. All of the land over here is private or state owned and most of my permissions are not safe enough to be doing long rang unfortunately. Hopefully you get your loads sorted soon and get out again. I would love to be able to develop loads for it myself. The hornady V-max group pretty well in mine, half inch groups most of the time when I have her cleaned out.

Mike, do the farmers in Ireland have problems with ground squirrels or perhaps, you don't have ground squirrels? A lot of the farmers in Northeast California allow people to shoot squirrels at this time of year as they eat their crops. My friend that I acquired the 220 Swift from (your Swift video), used to use the Swift and now uses the 17 HMR and it works great 100+ yards and is a lot cheaper than the Swift ammo. Thanks for posting your new video.
@mikeoutdoors222 ай бұрын
@danielwick2852 Hi Daniel, no we don't have ground squirrels here in Ireland,,. I love looking at those videos of the guys shooting them over in the States. We have a rabbits that a lot of farmers want shot for the same reason. Some places are over ran with them. The HMR makes short work of them, great little round. Appreciate the comment buddy, cheers

Mike, I am happy to say, I now have a little sister to my Ruger M77 220 Swift, it is a Ruger M77/17 in 17HMR with Weaver optics; both purchased from a friend of mine. I won't be able to take it home until next Monday as California has a 10 day waiting period. Now I need to stock pile ammunition for this new rifle and purchase a bipod.

First, I love your Irish accent! My guess is you are no longer on that sainted ground, but now in the US. Recently, I acquired a Ruger M77 chambered in 220 Swift and I hope to go plinking in the next week or so. I purchased 300 new pieces of new Hornady brass, but I won't be able to handload any cases before testing, so I purchased 2 boxes of Hornady 55gr V-Max. Your video has got me stoked!
@mikeoutdoors222 ай бұрын
Cheers Daniel, no buddy I'm still here in Ireland. I love seeing lads still hyped about the swift, it's a brilliant round and so underrated. Your very lucky over there that you can hand load, ammo over here most of the time is hard to get and only in hornady V-max and occasionally remington or federal and priced anywhere between 50 to 90 euro a box, Hope you injoy the new rifle buddy.
@danielwick28522 ай бұрын
@@mikeoutdoors22 Mike, my son and I will be going plinking this week with various calibers, up in the Sierra's on BLM land; not too many people on week days, but on weekends, you have folks in every hollow throwing lead. Question: is that a Harris bipod? I've never used or had a bipod as I've have a couple of heavy varmint rests, but it's time for a bipod. Is your bipod a 6-9 inch adjustable? Also, are you on Facebook as well? Or perhaps an email? I received my Hornady brass last week; 300 cases. We will be using factory Hornady (same as your video) this week, just to get a fell for the rifle. As the best!
@mikeoutdoors222 ай бұрын
@danielwick2852 Daniel, yea it's a 9 inch Harris bipod. I have it over 20 years and still going strong. Be a safer and more fun to be at the range when it's quieter for sure.
@danielwick28522 ай бұрын
My friend that I got the 220 Swift from (he had 4 of them in different makes, now less one) told me about one year shooting ground squirrels in Alturas, California, on farm land. They would set their shooting tables up on a hill, shooting out to 100-200 yards downward into the farmland. One morning, there was a cold mist that was hovering over the ground up to about 10 feet. When firing the Swift, you could see the line the bullet made all the way out to the target, like a white laser beam and then moments later, it started disappearing in vapor all the way out to the target. Cool imagery.
@mikeoutdoors222 ай бұрын
@danielwick2852 that's very cool Daniel, i love when you see the air bend and distorted with the speed of the bullet but that sounds pretty cool to see.

Hello. Do you ever cast lures when surf fishing? Here in the states we throw a variety of lures in addition to set rigs when surf fishing.
@mikeoutdoors222 ай бұрын
Well buddy, yea we throw lures in the surf to, mainly for Bass off the beach and from the rocks we get pollack, bass, mackerel and wrasse. I normally only bring one set up at a time, I find it more relaxing not having to pay attention to the bottom rods while I'm lure fishing.

Hey mike, Great video. Can you tell me how do you go about making the moulds?
@mikeoutdoors223 ай бұрын
Well buddy, its easy enough. The silacone mold is better then the plaster one in my opinion. You can get mold making silacone from amazon, I made the lure master from polymer clay and bake it in the oven till it hardens up, normal around 20 minutes then let it cool down. You can make a mold box out of cardboard and poor the silacone in, it takes about 4 - 6 hours to harden and your ready to go. Hope this helps

how big of a rod do u need and how far out does the bait need to be?
@mikeoutdoors223 ай бұрын
You just need a beach caster, they start out about 12ft and go up from there. It depends on what your fishing for regarding bait but can't go wrong with crab, rag worm and lug worm is good too. I normally bring 2 rods and cast one as far as I can and the other around 20yards out and get results on both.

Steel has almost double the pellets of steel which is nice for getting a hit but its power drop off makes it far less effective. At 30 yards its energy is only about half that of lead so you need to use 1-2 sizes larger to have effective energy or you'll just have a lot of wounded birds. In the US we can cant use lead for waterfowl because the birds eat it so what a lot of people use is Bismuth with is about half way between steel and lead in density or tungsten which is actually denser then lead. Only downsize is Bismuth rounds cost about 2-3 what the steel does and tungsten cost about 6-8 times as much as steel.
@mikeoutdoors226 ай бұрын
Appreciate the advice buddy, it only came into law this year in Ireland, so far I can't complain about it, I'm finding it to be about the same as lead at the distance I shoot but have went with bigger shot size like you said. We have hardly any shops selling anything other than lead at the moment so it's hard to get. I will look more into it over the next few months
