An active railroad track? That must get loud. I am working to try to mask some of the road noise as I am just off one of the main roads in my area and it can get loud during high traffic times - mostly trying to plant natural plant barriers to absorb/block sound.

Thanks - I would like to blame it on equipment, but it is mostly the operators fault. I have an older DJI gimble to smooth out shots and it will occasionally go berserk, but mostly I forget to slow down when filming for the audience. Not enough time in the day to do the work and properly film it.

Teach Cooper the command “LEAVE IT”…treat him at the same time (distraction) as the Amish buggy goes by! We live in the ADKs woods and our dog after teaching her “LEAVE IT” will not chase any critter. Say it like you mean it! But def give a treat! He’ll learn!
@backtotheadk883Ай бұрын
Unfortunately I have taught him the "Leave it" command - it works for most everything - squirrels, chipmunks, other dogs his size or smaller, except large animals. I got him when he was 2 years old as a rescue and he has always had what I refer to as "little man syndrome". If he sees a larger dog (I am guessing the horse is the largest "dog" he has ever seen) his brain just shuts off. He does not hear commands at all. I practiced "Leave it" with him every day over the 5 months while he was on his 30 ft lead and would still go crazy when the horses go by. He did get to the point where when he was on-lead he would begrudgingly stop barking, but I have no confidence that if he was off lead he wouldn't be down the hill before I even heard the horse cart (which is how his incident happened). He has become more socialized around other dogs, especially those with a calm demeanor - even ones larger than him, like my brothers golden retriever, but horses appear to be his kryptonite. This is the first time he has been at my place for more than 2 weeks, so maybe next summer he will get more used to them, but I will keep him on lead for now and let him off only when I am sure there is no chance of a horse going by. Thanks for watching

Did Cooper chase any more horses or did he learn a lesson? I agree, 6 is not a 'serving' of wheat thins, maybe 'handful' would be a better measure 🤣
@backtotheadk8832 ай бұрын
Unfortunately he did not learn any lessons - I had to keep him on lead every day until I saw that the coast was clear and the last Amish family had passed, then he was let off lead to run. Sundays were his hall pass day as the Amish around me stayed close to home on Sundays, with the exception of going to church, so he was allowed off lead all day.

It is a nice stove - thanks for that! I was able to get the funky burner cleaned up and working 100% (the gas pipe had a little blockage) and I used heat resistant stove paint on the grates to make them like new. Looking forward to being back in the spring. I'll have to get some logs down to where we can mill them up!

@backtotheadk8833 ай бұрын
Yeah, it got fixed, but it took almost 2 months for the guy I use to get me on the schedule - there was so much water damage last summer that everyone was busy fixing the roads and when they weren't doing that, a lot of people were in the same boat as I was. Eventually got a culvert put in where the logging road comes down off the hill to divert the bulk of the water and dug out and lined the uphill ditch with heavy stone, so it couldn't wash out again. We will see how it fares over the 2025 winter/spring season. Thanks for watching.

This was a good year for Apples, so my brother expects to get 18-20, 5 gallon carboys of fermented cider - around 80-85 gallons once the entire process is done and it is kegged.

if you put a clear poly plastic roof on, you can collect the rain water for showers and it lets in more light. Nice build, i love the stick design at the bottom of the shower
@backtotheadk8833 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! When I was researching properties I looked into rainwater collection and have seen several of these systems that work really well. I was lucky enough to find a place with both a deep well (over 300 ft) and a natural spring, so I have more problems controlling the over abundance of water that I have than not having enough. Next year I may try to rebuild the spring head for irrigation and other water needs around the property.

It's great how you are always thinking of ways to make "small" enhancements that have a significant impact on your projects. Hope your time in the ADK this summer was all you hoped for. Keep up the great work on your future & thanks for sharing your journey.
@backtotheadk8833 ай бұрын
Thanks Dan - this project evolved over the summer based on what was available. The bent wood around the bottom was probably the most fun part, and only came about because of a log milling project where I had to get rid of the top and limbs of the tree. I wish I could have gotten more of the dead trees cleared from the hillside, but all in all it was a good summer. Looking forward to next year.

@backtotheadk8836 ай бұрын
While I am pretty sure I have bears from some of the scat I found (answering the age old question of do bears poop in the woods). they are mostly spooked by humans unless threatened or they are protecting a food opportunity (read - dumpster at a campground where they get used to being around people). Black bears are possible here, but unlikely as I follow food protocols and lock things up at night. ps - Cooper loves it here - especially the chipmunks that he likes to chase (but never catches)

I considered Starlink at my offgrid cabin, but when I checked (Gen 1) it consumed something like 60-90w, 24 hours a day. You mention 110w so I guess it's gotten worse. 2400 watt hours a day is INSANE, but I guess if it's the only option. Thankfully one of our service providers came along with rural wireless internet and I get a nice stable connection and the power consumption doesn't even register on my system.

@backtotheadk88310 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment - I will need to check the state of the boards when I go back in a few months and see how they did over the winter. Cherry is not ideal for the outer boards, so I may pull them off (at least the ones on the bottom of the walls) and replace with something like cedar that is more weather resistant. I could always use the cherry to make a desk or headboard for use in my tent!

Glad you like it - digging the pit is the hardest part in the ADK - all roots and rocks. Once you get that done you can tackle the fun parts. Dig the pit as deep as you can (the deeper it is, the longer you have before needing to move the outhouse) and only use compostable materials in the pit that will break down. This is better for the environment, and the faster it breaks down, the less your pit will fill up. Good luck with your outdoor adventure!
@backtotheadk883 Жыл бұрын
I wound up pulling off the seat boards (12 screws) and re-positioning the bucket to just under the benchtop. It didn't smell, but having the bucket up higher means mice and squirrels are less likely to get curious and fall into the pit when I am not there. Thanks for the suggestion.
