Well done! To bad reality doesn't respect such ease in mastery. The man has reached the level of master in all sense of perception. However, there was a catch word spoken. "Customer". The person that knows the least, has the check book & is in charge? This is the #1 problem I personally have been contending with since I had to take on customers, because of the 2008 crash. Some business's only contend with qualified entities, and not the general public. Another resolution is, like Hollywood does', "Branding". Make a studio with reception waiting with an aura of hierarchy. One that is in a setting that, 20 feet from entering, everyone detects with their 6th sense and is internally "in awe"! While in this stage of advantage, the receptionist "well practiced" collects a retainer, prior to any further investment then the branding. "Not a deposit"! If you request a deposit, by definition & law, the customer can have 100% returned upon request. Those conditions must be stated. If conditions are not stated, 100% return it is, at anytime! Remember, small clams court is time consuming and bad for the brand. Refund and move on. NOT! *Retainers are non refundable, and are just the 1st payment. Have it as policy written on the wall with a ph.# that is not yours. Make it easy & secure, like Zelle. A receptionist with generous breast and legs is highly advised and fitting to the brand as beautiful people. Then, after a short wait and the collection of survey & HOA deeds, extra, a warm greeting & a "Well Rehearsed" process of Q&A steps in proper order, after announcing this is recorded, video & audio, all the while, soothing and comforting to the customer. Achieving an 70-80% absolution of the plan order completion, and from there the customer gets 3 voile's of floor plan revisions. After the third, apply a touch of brand pressure. The relationship will vary and possibly, completely get out of control. However, the main goal has been accomplished. If the relationship goes' in any direction other then to a smooth final, you are in the plus. Always be in the plus, because if you let the customer take you into the negative, because you are just winging it, you have no one to blame but your self. Be in charge, & stay in charge, by getting a *retainer. The best studio with reception is one that is near, or connected to your vacation like residence. From the customers entry, is completely unknown. So you are the least disturbed as you don't really work there. You work in your custom vacation home and your receptionist is really one of many female actors that sets up the, "by appointment only" meetings and is paid commission, pending on the totals & upgrades, or how nice she is. Never lawfully marry, but contract marriage's? That may vary to the point of being, nice!

I’m thinking he did alright! Jeez, do you guys eat your young? Berkus established an architectural firm in Santa Barbara in the 1970s.[2] He eventually "employed more than 200 architects", with offices in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur.[3]

Of course congress didn't like it. They want something as small and cheap as possible. The "budget" is the ultimate authority on what is and is not a solution in our communities.

I found this video after seeing Julius Schulman's photos of this house. I would like to string up Barry Berkus and Jaclyn Shor, if they are the ones responsible for coating the interior in cream-colored paint. Thee rafter and other supports were originally black, and the floor tiles were neither white nor set at 45 degrees. What a crying shame.

At no stage in the design process did he even investigate a 3D hand sketch of the concept. This is NOT good design methodology. You must ALWAYS think in 3 dimensions. Architecture is not a flat 2 D plane, it is all about space, volume aspect and light. This “lesson” is bullshit.

I thought he said what the levels were and what the site characteristics were. You see, you have to picture his words. He is showing a graphical organizational methodology at the start of the process, not developing the whole design before you. As a teacher, there is much value in this lesson.

The diagram becomes a building! Architecture is merely the name of the process that organizes buildings (shelter/enclosure/spaces) to provide socially meaningful benefit. The driving concept of architecture is that it is not mere 'problem solving'. Problem solving is a reductionist impulse to get a problem out of the way. Sure, there are a milion problems that must be solved on the way to providing the benefit to the client, users, and those who encounter the building. but we are NOT problem solvers. We are opportunity takers and makers; we are benefit openers, we create environments, shelters that intervene in people's lives to give them satisfaction that they otherwise would not have, we help to shape social meaning, we help people find places in which and by which to flourish. We make the background for personal expansion, satisfaction and exploration in socially meaningful shelters, from factories, to warehouses, to hospitals, offices and homes. That's what we do. From the get go, we think of the persons who will experience our spaces and profit from them, both metaphorically and actually.
