I remember reading an article many years ago, probably around 2009 or so, saying subscriptions were going to be the future. This was the plan all along. That’s when I started building my physical collection. The only subscription I have is Apple Music and that’s so I can download the music on my iPod. I’m a music buff so I get much use out of it. Even then, I own hundreds of records hundreds of CDs and cassettes still. Iv never had a Netflix or Hulu subscription ever. If I want to watch something I buy a physical copy of it. No clutter at all, all tucked away on a couple large bookshelves. That’s it.

A subscription model for heated seats?????? Are we being serious right now? At this point, I don’t really care if people pirate and I can’t really blame people for committing that kind of theft because all of this is literally stealing the rights from the people to own stuff. I mean, yes we don’t have to buy them, but they’re making it so that for you to live and to use basic things that everyone uses you need to constantly spend money that you don’t have. You can’t save up to get something because you’ll always be paying for it and so you’ll always be in debt Yah. No.

Apart from blaming companies for doing subscription models, let’s also blame ourselves for being a part of the problem. We have the power to cancel subscriptions and when many people do it at once then companies start to panick. Instead of succumbing to this normalization let’s do something to change that so that we can control and have ownership of what we buy and just our lives in general

0:02 "The Gen Zers don't want to own anything" What a jerkwad It's not that people don't want to own things, it's that we are largely not given a choice. Also, it's like a fish in water, people aren't going to know there's an alternative if they've never been made aware. I don't really think that means that people "want" it that way. But than again, I don't have my head up my backside, so maybe I'm biased. Unlike Mr. Has A Lot Of Opinions over there.

btw you can actually upload your own ebooks to kindle! honestly it seems like the best way to use them is to acquire files in some way (that's not public talk but im sure you'll find some if you look), upload them to your kindle ("send to Kindle") and otherwise keep it off wifi, as they can't fuck with you that way. that and keeping a digital backup of all your books somewhere. absolutely just a smalllll part of the conversation but I use my (hand-me-down) kindle pretty often and that specific part is important to me

and remember!!! you're not buying the books off Amazon, you're buying a license to read them!! I absolutely do not agree with what they do but there is nothing stopping them from fucking with the ebooks you pay them for

So no one alive from now on will be able to buy new things without massive wealth. GenZ is the generation that won't get a chance to own anything. They admit this in the first minute. Gen Z in the US by and large did not vote for their own interests!!! Booomer went 50/50. GenZ go fucking vote next time if there is one.

Shouldn't we stop getting these services on mass? It will make them experience a huge financial loss. Changes would come real quick trust me

I understand that there's many things that have subscriptions but why are we acting like we're forced to?, I own a ps5 and I've never had the need to buy a subscription and I also own my physical disc, now about some services, Netflix it's literally 8 dollars just like crunchyroll, KZbin it's a bit more expensive but I think it's worth it, also services like Walmart and Amazon which again you do not need to buy but at the end of the day and are like 10 bucks, I'LL SAY IT AGAIN YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO BUY ANYTHING PEOPLE.

Just a small note: Regarding Klarna, it's not a new company, maybe in the US, but it's originally a Swedish company and by now it's about 20 years old already.

I know it's not a solution to the source of the problem (enshittification of services, subscription models and all that endless corpo greed), but if you already have huge Spotify or KZbin playlists, there are online converters that can backup your playlists into text/csv files, and you can store them on a external hard drive for safety, in case they decide to delete your account or something (also remember the 3-2-1 backup rule). At least you will have data that you can recover and import back into a new account.

That's why I'll never get rid of my N64 or DVD player. No updates, no subscriptions, no internet access needed. Just a reminder, TV's are like this too now. If you have a "dumb" tv, hang on to it for dear life as long as it still works. I tried to find a "dumb" tv to replace on of mine and they literally don't exist anymore. Every tv that's made now if a "smart" tv with built in bullshit that tracks you, that you can't turn off.

Here’s my advice: live your life like it’s 1984. All the things might be old, but they won’t require subscriptions.
@orinhusser80252 сағат бұрын
This is all caused by the choices of the younger consumers. Subscription services like satellite or cable TV have been around for a long time and nobody believed they had the right to own the shows or movies they viewed on them. If you want to own copies of your music, buy the actual MP3 from a service like Amazon Music and download it. Instant gratification has made consumers lazy. They no longer want to buy and store blu-rays, physical books, CDs/MP3s, etc. If you don't like the control or licensing a company uses for their subscription service, then don't pay them. Nobody forced you to get Spotify, Amazon ebooks, Netflix, Hulu, Apple iCloud, HP printers, Adobe products, or The Weather Channel premium. Also, console companies charge for online play but Steam does not (used a Steam icon to represent gaming subscriptions). Anyone who uses the buy now and pay later model just doesn't know how to manage a budget.

As a millennial who saw the rise of subscription to services, I cannot emphasize enough how much those piss me off. If a CD costs between the €15-20, that'd mean you could buy 6-8 new CD's a year. How much different music do ya'll listen to? Heck, the library used to have a collection of CD's and DVD's besides books. Here in the Netherlands, libraries even have a toy catalogue so you can have your kids play with all kinds of different toys. Yet subscription services rule the world, with 2 that were the most notable in pissing me off: subscribe to a physical bicycle for €17 a month - if you even get as much as a flat tire, they'll swap it out. For that money you could buy a brand new budget bike EACH YEAR, and probably do away with the old one before you even get as much as a flat tire - in a country where we have 24/7 roadside assistance even for cyclists for as little as €26 a year. Who even has these subscription bikes? Since I've read about it, I am baffled about it's existence because I thought we were frugal people. I am disappointed in complete strangers! Another subscription service that pisses me off quite like fridges is dryers. Unless your home is spectacularly badly insulated and heated you can dry your damn laundry on a rack, it's a luxury product, and the websites where you'd buy your dryer now first give you the option to subscribe to a €800 dryer for €25 p/m. You could buy it for you were willing consistently to put away 2.6 years. What on earth? My last dryer lasted me 10 years. That would have accumulated to €3000. What the actual blistering fuck? Who does this? And why? I swear to god I'd rather live in a nightmare of a cluttered home, than forgo my ownership of anything and be a serf to companies willing to squeeze every single last penny out of me. Shame on them. For the love of god, make 10 savings accounts, name them electronics, media, clothes, travel and whatever, and just after 1 year of living sober, you get to pay for stuff out of your own pocket out of a dedicated savings account. Be your own subscription service, I beg of you.

Spotify has been one of the only things I've kept forever because I listen to so much music my phone is playing Spotify basically non-stop everyday so I can justify that. Netflix prime fucking Hulu whatever all those come and go like I'll get one for a month and then it's gone. subscriptions were great in the beginning because it was like Blockbuster...but everything now there are 500 different subscriptions just for movies and TV no longer worth it, not for that many subscriptions anyway.

Sorry I think the Gen Z is a bit spoiled. Why are we blaming older generations 🤔? I bought my first car for 2,500.00 on a 4.65 hr minimum wage part time job. In what world can Gen Z not afford to buy a used car for 4,800.00 where most states have a minimum wage of $12.00/ hr on up. Maybe stop buying all the $7 dollar coffees at Starbucks on the daily.

I remember when we were having this discussion about millennials. Now is Gen Z's time to have the spotlight shown on them before society collectively decides "Yeah okay they're screwed, what can you do? Let's talk about the next generation having the same problem now".
