Soaps are surfactants. That's why you feel like you need a lather for them to work... because you do. Washing with soap is a mechanical process, not chemical. Surfactants lower the surface tension of water making it easier to carry away oils, dirt, and grime when it's rinsed off. When washing your hands, or hair, it's that mechanical process The molecular chains of surfactants act like microscopic needles that can puncture microorganisms. That's not exactly what's happening but it's a good analogy. The tails of these needle like molecules cause water to rush away from them. The tails bind with oils so when you rinse the soap off, it carries all that away with it down the drain. That's why you don't feel clean without a lather, because you aren't. No lather, no needles, no mechanical process. I didn't know the bit about sulfates, though. My hair isn't colored but I'm going to stay away from them anyway.

As an Irish person even though I am a boy (but of course I am a feminist) this book depicts the rape culture in Ireland to perfection, its surreal and I can tell you from an Irish perspective this is the exact treatment of victims, and also the idolization of sportsmen in Ireland (especially GAA players which is Irish football). Every party scene , school scene and family topics she describes is so realistic to Ireland.
