Damn Iain, you're the most amazing one-man-band I've come across. Your "Grand Designs" songs are utterly marvelously crafted, almost can hear an audiation of Dream Theater themselves playing these, haha!! I hope you're doing well in whatever future musical endeavors you decide to take on. I'll have you know that I myself love to make long prog tracks aswell... come to think of it, I shall upload one to YT pretty soon actually ;)

I empathize, at a time in the mid 80s I gave up on my grand designs in music and took up studies in mechanical engineering. Engineering has payed off quite well. With this decision, I've been able to practice and create music daily, no pressures with it, following my own muse for my own enjoyment. But please do continue to post your musical creations when you can. Your music is way too brilliant to be tucked away from humanity.

Residency is busy, though I'm surprised it has been SO busy that I failed to notice this for so long. KZbin emailed me that you interacted with a comment I made on one of your videos 8 years ago when I was studying calculus in college. I watched your discussion video on this too and resonated with what you said about how of life's pages you turned while writing this. Throughout the stages of training, medicine has been a consumptive pursuit. Your example has kept me tethered to the possibility that creativity and rest still exist even at times when I forgot what either felt like. In a profession characterized by extremism, yours was an example of moderation that has brought me a lot of comfort. On to the song itself, I heard it as the soundtrack to years that I don't quite know how to remember yet. Brilliant musicianship and obvious passion throughout. The inspiration to pick up my guitars has eluded me, but I'm told this is a known and common side effect of resident work hours and have my fingers crossed for eventual spontaneous resolution! In the mean time, I have this heartfelt joy of a composition to keep the pilot light going strong. As always, thank you. And thank you for calling my attention to this by triggering that email to be sent. It's good to 'see' you again!

Man I have no idea how I have missed your comment until now. I am so sorry for such a late reply. Thank you so much for your kind words about the song, it really means a lot! I think US residency is a lot busier than being a junior doctor here. Don't get me wrong it's still busy here but I think you guys somehow do even more!! You're absolutely right about medicine being consumptive. It took me far too long to finish this. The free time I had from work was really spent just recovering or indeed often still worrying about patients so was not really a break at all. One thing I have not mastered despite having been a doctor for nearly 6 years now is leaving work at work. Of course there will always be some cases that keep us awake at night but I am finding most cases do. Having said all of this, I did finish GD4 so it IS possible! A little bit here and there can go a long way. I hope you are enjoying medicine. I like medicine however over here in the UK sometimes we do not get to practice it how we would like as our national health service is stretched for a variety of reasons (quite a political hot topic over here so I will try not to get into it). Covid hit hard too - a lot of this was actually written during the peak covid times. How long have you been working now? My guitars gained dust in my first year as a doctor sadly. My keyboards still harbour dust sadly as I have no speakers in my current flat to play them through! Next time you have a moment record a little bit of guitar - can be anything, can be total rubbish but record it and listen to it and reflect on it! See what happens! It always so good to hear from you my friend. My best wishes to you as you continue you through residency. I imagine it will be incredibly tough but, despite our interaction only being brief and online, you seem like an amazing human being so I have every faith in you. Best wishes, Iain

@@258lemons I've been working for just under 2 years now in residency. Next year transitions to outpatient, and these grueling 60+ hour weeks (I'm told) pare down to 40-50 hour weeks. I was reading an article the other day about how much of humanity considers 40 hours to be a full work week and bristling at the realization that, to me, 40 hours seems like a positively leisurely schedule. Thank you for your encouragement! I did pick up the guitar, and noodled enthusiastically for a little, realizing that my noodles have long since become as dry and brittle as the characteristic discarded cup of ramen that graces the window ledges of so many a beleaguered academic... but if a humble beginning rightly starts a first chapter, why not so a second? Ever grateful for your acquaintance & example.
@258lemons8 ай бұрын
@@adamhoward2951 It's so true - sadly I still have to deal with 60+ hours weeks on my rota if on call. I suppose it's all about service provision at the end of the day as I am not convinced it really benefits anyone - doctor or patient! As you say 40 hours is a dream (although if you get used to it can become tough I have found personally!) The dry noodles will at some point become a rich stir fry - as you say why not a second chapter? At the end of the day it just about having fun and expressing yourself musically so does't matter if it is good or bad! As ever man it is such a privilege to hear from you. Your continued kind words and support mean so much to me. As you say we have been through similar experiences with medicine although truthfully I suspect you will have had to deal with more difficulties being a Resident in the US than me being a junior doctor in the UK so I have so much respect for that man! Best wishes for the future and I hope we speak again soon!
