I've seen other off gridders do this with a barrel, which seems like it would ensure all of the air is purged from the system. I could be wrong, though.

Get hold of one of the big square ex acid barrels that have a metal frame around them. Site it up slope and level it, near the intakes and feed both the intake pipes into the top of the barrel. Put in an overfow pipe at the top of the barrel and an out feed close to the bottom. Any bubbles will then have a chance to escape out of the overfow pipe and you should have no problems from having one feed from the streams higher than the other.

If the pelton wheel is one piece, make sure you have a spare. The cups being plastic have a habit of breaking. If the cups are bolted into the hub get a few cups for spares.

I was just about to comment on friction losses in smaller pipes, but you beat me to it. However, a good scounge on scrap yards can sometimes yield gems. When i was making stuff in a 7x5 foot shed, on a benchtop lathe and milling machine,, I'd go to a steel distributer and rummage through the stuff that was in their waste skip. the amount of good lengths of bar stock, solid bar, angle iron,. You name it, i got it and all for a small donation towards their Christmass p*ss up. The 5 inch x 9 foot steel pipe I got from a manufacturer of street lighting for £10 that I had to force the guy to take. That became a rocket stove which burned the back of my legs when lit. Asking costs nothing, keeping your mouth shut sometimes costs you a fortune. If you want to keep the 4mil plastic tubing then to stop it creeping down hill, every few yards clamp a small linked chain around it and secure it to the stream banks with offcuts of rebar. hammered into either side. More work but more safety With larger pipes pumping water uphill. it may require a throttle plate wit a small hole drillen in the middle,above the pump outlet. This serves to reduce the pressure on the pump outlet. at the top of the stream, use the rocks from the water collection point, and build a fair sized dam , lined on the uphill side with old plastic bags for a better seal and anchor the bottom of the bacgs with small rocks to stop ithem from being washed away. the deeper the dam pond, the less likely you are of getting turbulent air bubble entering the strainer.

About that indigenous people not wanting to dig the earth; I heard in a podcast that’s rather philosophical that maybe they didn’t want to dig the earth because of the black liquid found down there. That it was the “devils” liquid. (I don’t know if that’s true tho). But look at what harvesting that liquid have done to animals, humans and the planet. I think it’s an interesting thought at least.

On the second fixing mate I've been drilling a 12mm hole, taking the screw out, hammering in the fixing, fitting a stair rail bracket and feeding the screw through the bracket into the fixing and tightening with a screwdriver drill, I thought this was spreading the fixing behind the plasterboard. Was I doing it wrong?
@beyondtheworkbench9 күн бұрын
Sounds like it should have worked. If you didn't have the tool to spread it you could try to tighten the bolt without the stair rail to check the spreader isn't spinning. Once it gets tight it has spread out and you can remove the bolt and then re screw it in with the stair rail in place as the spreader will stay in place

Those turbo cups look like Hartvigson items. They are pretty efficient. At a head of 75 meters there is nothing to be gained by going to a Pelton wheel. Also due to friction loss in the pipe your turbine is experiencing less than 35 meters. So with a larger diameter pipe you could get more than twice the power while using the same quantity of water. Nothing wrong with bringing both supplies down one pipe. However I would tend to have both supplies feeding a settling tank, then take your main penstock (pipe) down from that tank. The main thing is, at the moment you are getting plenty for your needs. Good luck with your project.

@beyondtheworkbench HI, good work on getting your system going. looks like its working well for your needs. as you say you do have a lot of fiction loss but if you upgrade to a larger pipe then that will solve that in the future. with regard to 3d printing coanda tiles like I have done. there is no need to smooth them off. you print the top face down on the glass bed of the printer so the wedged part is getting thinner towards the top. this gives the top face a perfect smooth finish. Print with very small layer lines 0.1mm and use PETG filament. they will be perfectly smooth with no noticeable layer lines and the tops with be shiny smooth. you are blessed with great head there so a lot of issue that would effect a lower head system won't show themselves that clearly to you because you are going to get great output no matter what you do just because of the massive head. one issue you might already have but I am sure you will have if you upgrade the pipe is that your nozzles are to big. I believe those nozzles have a 16mm opening so with that head pressure they would flow 7.5 lps fully open at 75m head. Because you have such high pipe friction at the moment that is reducing your pressure at the nozzles so the nozzles are not to over sized. But as you increase the pipe size the pressure will go up forcing more water out of the nozzles. Why is this a problem if the nozzle is adjustable? well the spear valve has a minimum opening size where the jet of water has enough area around the spear to form a proper jet. Before this point the jet is distorted. So I would think at the moment you only have to open those valves about a quarter of there range to get your output. But as you reduces the losses and the pressure goes up those nozzles will only just be open and probably not enough to form a full jet of water and defiantly not able to be turned down. That is one problem I can foresee you having with those nozzles.The silt building up around them is part of this issue. it's because they are not opened enough they are already running to closed. Unless you plan on running a flow rate of 3lps minimum and about 8lps full output those nozzles are just far to big for your system. Another thing to take in to account. those generators are good but I would not run it at 2kw that would be pushing it really hard. and remember that if its rated at 2kw you have to take in to account that if you are seeing 2kw at point of use then the actual power going through the alternator is about 15-20% more than that due to the losses. if in the future you wanted to get the full potential out of the system you would want to go to a custom made turbine suited to your conditions with a induction motor for the generator. Pelton would be best for this head. But a proper custom turbine with induction motor will be much better than buying an off the shelf one.
@beyondtheworkbench18 күн бұрын
Hi Kris! Thanks for the info, I have been watching your videos for years, you were the one I had seen that made me think hydro could work. I am experiencing exactly what you say about the nozzles and am saving all the changes for the upgrade. I am also working on a 'donut' shaped enclosure for the pelton wheel etc to attempt to controll the overspray and focus the sound in a better way. We quite a few streams here so I think I am planning on adding more turbines rather than squeezing this system all the way up to the maximum 2kw. (I am also looking at the 120v generator as it should lower the thickness of cable needed as the one I am running now is the 48v version. Your workshop looks amazing! and I have been wanting to make my own cider after watching that one back when it came out. Rob

A couple of suggestions for things for the house that are a bit esoteric even in the passive house community, but is especially relevant for off grid living: 1. Willow sewage treatment is something you should look into, it has become very popular in Denmark because it allows you to avoid having a septic tank, and avoid having to live with a weird composting toilet. You have totally normal plumbing in the house and a totally normal flushing toilet, it just works, and if you run the willow as a 7 year coppice rotation with 3 limbs per tree you get excellent firewood by the end of year 7. 2. Sirch, a German company, manufactures a unique hot water storage tank that is basically like a giant thermos bottle, it has a double wall with a vacuum in between the shell and the actual tank, they make them anywhere from 10 m3 capacity up to 100 m3 capacity, which is more than 5 times as efficient as a normal insulated tank, which means it can be used for seasonal heat storage. You generate the power throughout the summer when there is plenty of sun, use a heat pump to make hot water, and put that into the storage tank. They are expensive but not crazy expensive, you are looking at about 15k EUR for a 20 m3 tank, which should be sufficient for your needs. Search google for Sirch Vacutherm and it will pop up. 3. Make sure to install a drain heat recovery pipe from a company like Showersave, it will reduce your hot water usage when showering by about 70%, big deal in the winter especially, and its not expensive or complex, its literally just a double wall copper pipe where the incoming cold water goes through the jacket and the drain water goes through the inner pipe. 4. The further up north you are the less ERVs make sense, you are likely best off going for a HRV with your location would be my guess, because as soon as we are talking significant minus degrees outside then you will have to preheat the incoming heat. Also, the best heat recovery ventilators come from a company called Dantherm, if the RCV320 is big enough for your house then go with that, its super super efficient. 5. Search google for "Passive House Component Database" by the way, you can find certificates for all sorts of passive house rated equipment on the site, super useful. 6. You should make sure when you buy a fireplace that it has two important functions, firstly, it should have a sealed external air intake, and secondly, it should be able to produce hot water. There is a model called Heta Scan-Line 805 Aqua which has both of these features, the air intake going to the outside means that the burn chamber is totally isolated from your house, and you can put a valve on the intake to close for the air when you arent using it, makes a big difference to efficiency and air tightness. The particular model I quoted above is also very efficient, 87% of the heat in the wood gets into the house or water, and 64% of the 87% gets into the water.

Those are excellent suggestions and perfectly timed as we have submitted our pre planning and are now working on the complete drawings and specifiying the systems. The hot water tank sounds perfect as we want to dump load to a hot water tank and use it for underfloor heating so a good tank is going to be really important. I have also been looking into masonry log burners with second stage burns and wondered if I could plumb in a hot water system to the rear so I am so glad you mentioned the Heta Scan-line as thats what I wanted.

More random thoughts while the adverts play. When I used to filter veg oil I have three tanks, each 2 inches lower than the last. The 1st feed goes via a ridged pipe to the base of the tank, the inbound oil pushes the oil at the top of the tank (with less crud) into tank two, that is also fed to the bottom and again pushes the oil into the bottom of tank 3. A 200L sock filter existed in each tank so regarding the silt, if you could, at the start of the run, at the top of your hill, push the water up, into first tank, gravity alone should remove a lot of muck. Maybe 3 stacked 1000L IBC containers would do if not too ugly. I shouldn't be typing on here as I've not watched the whole video or any of your other videos, this just stumbled into my feed so apologies if this is nonsense.
@beyondtheworkbench18 күн бұрын
Thats an amazing suggestion
@jobbingactor18 күн бұрын
@@beyondtheworkbench your welcome, of course then, if you managed to get water UP into the first IBC tank you "could" allow say 10% to flow back down to the input source to "wash" the screen of leaves etc

A quote from a Terry Pratchett book (I think it might have been Going Postal?). "No practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based.” I think that the idea of disconnecting from the system completely is pretty much impossible. The system provides an economy of scale. I certainly couldn't survive in the wild by working as little as I do in a job. (And by saying as little, I mean doing a normal 9-5 day job.) Even if you were able to secure enough truly wild land that survival was possible and took with you all the skills and knowledge. You would need to have so many people with you to spread the work and work so hard. Also it would take years to build up enough resources and infrastructure (even if you tried to love nomadically, you would still need to carry a lot with you). And life would be short, without modern medical care. Most of us only know the very comfortable life (compared to true self sufficiency) that the system allows us.

My solar is similarly low angle, due to the location. I find that the sun angles in the winter really affect the generation (it's a simple cosine calculation, so not surprising). But that sun angle also affects the amount of tree shadowing I suffer. To the point that there would be no gain for me to change the panel angle in the winter. Just live with a few months of poor output.
