Morning Chris from Switzerland, watching this in my commute to work 😄 So far from my limited prime and event expirience, doing mostly landscapes, owning the 50 1.2 and 135 1.8 i think the 24 is the most interesting one to me. Had the issue where a venue was so tight i couldnt really do much with my primes and had to use the 24-70 2.8 and 2.8 was too much for the low light.

I love your channel, and I have watched a lot of your videos. I have a question, and I hope you can help Dose using crop mode and clear image zoom in sony cameras affects the actual focal length of the lens ( changes the depth of field and specialy the lens distortion ) or it is just a croping in the image like croping in post ( croping on the computer ) ? I hope you can give me an answer or test this in a video. because it will help me in decisions buying my upcoming lenses
@dima1353Ай бұрын
Most likely the correction profile will be the same as in the 24 1.8. Or very similar. If they didn't touch the distortion in the 35 1.4, then they definitely didn't correct it in this lens. So congratulations to all my fellow Canonists. Now we have a $1500 prime lens, the normal operation of which involves cropping 15-20% of the image area.

We knew this lens was going to be sharp. I was more interested in breathing performance and it looks minimal. Distortion levels without correction is the big question now.

0:26 "24f1.4 lenses tend to be very expensive as it's a difficult optic to design"... That was the case on SLR cameras due to the 40mm flange distance, any lens shorter than flange distance needs to be retro-focusing which requires extra lens elements, but modern cameras are short flange and so a 24mm optic should be no more difficult to design than 50mm.
@bn5fgАй бұрын
But it is still harder. You can't fit a lens into 24-18=6mm. So you still need some retrofocusing. And wides are harder to design in general.
@christopherfrostАй бұрын
You are correct in saying that wide angle lens design is easier now with mirrorless cameras, but it's still much, much harder to design a bright wide angle lens than a relatively simple 50mm optic
@budthecyborg4575Ай бұрын
@@christopherfrost The only other point I know of that makes wide angle optically complex is the Angle of Incidence, where APS-C gets an inherent advantage due to the smaller sensor area, but among Full Frame systems RF mount is very wide at 33 degrees and Nikon Z mount is the widest of all at 41 degrees.

24mm generally problems with sharpness? How come? I thought (educated in film times) 24mm was the widest lens with still "normal" image characteristics. That got me thinking: How about a video about the general characteristics of the different focal lengths? You offer very good background informations as they apply to the gear you review. But given the pace and the way lens engineers use every trick in the book, like Artisan using a fresnel lens in their 500mm f11, it seems to me a good look at the physics and engineering of lenses could be helpful, especially for beginners, but not only for them! I for my part still have to figure out what focus breathing is.

Funny how the aperture ring works for stills photography on some cameras. Every system has its quirks I guess and these are a new batch of lenses. 1800gbp is more expensive than the Sony 24/1,4 GM but then cross-system-comparisons are kind of pointless. Every camera system is moving upmarket though it seems.
