Freeze response to stress, or triggers. This survival response makes sense as a response to chronic prolonged stressors. Disassociation when you can’t escape the chronic stress.

I have a question; shenpa vs klesha? Shenpa seems like a flash of attachment or aversion which if followed, leads to a klesha? Shenpa gives birth to kleshas? 🤔 🙏🌹

“There is a cult of ignorance… and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'” - Isaac Asimov "The fundamental cause of the trouble in the modern world today is that the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” - Bertrand Russell

I heard one teacher describe it like this: “Kanzeon will make you into whatever you want. If you wanna be a king, she’ll make you a king. If you wanna be wealthy, she’ll make you wealthy. If you wanna be beautiful, she’ll make you beautiful. If you wanna be a Christian, she’ll make you a Christian. If you wanna be a God, she’ll make you a God. She will make you into whatever you want. But in the end - she’ll make you a Buddha.”

This is only tangentially related, and forgive this absurdly long comment, but since I know you love Thich Nhat Hahn, and that you are a language nerd, I thought I’d share a recently translated dharma talk of his. It’s a commentary on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness Sutra: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrTaKqFrtaNa7Msi=95gIWMhV6-UDdYAM He concretely and convincingly demonstrates how mindfulness of body leads directly to the liberating insight of awakening. Extremely compelling stuff. He also provides important correctives to several language issues surrounding this sutra, and he uses that discussion to do a larger course correction on how we talk about and teach the Dharma. His prowess in using language skillfully is really on display here too. Plum Village sangha has begun to translate his Vietnamese-language talks to monastics into English. These are talks not previously accessible to English speaking audiences. Lots of gems uploaded on channel already. I think this collection is an important addition to our body of knowledge in the western Buddhist world, and it gives us a chance to get to know Thay more deeply and to see more sides of him. 🙏🏿

I wish MC Owens would state his opinions up front, because he laughs a lot at things and it makes me think he is introducing his bias towards Mahayana Buddhism. Perhaps that is making me skeptical of his intention. I value his massive knowledge and willing to question, which makes me question. It's difficult to decipher where the difference occurs between Mahayana, Nihayana, or Theravada. I'm rather confused and would have to try to pick through this talk to figure it out. It's not that you have to run away in fear or that you have to get away from it is that you have to have mastery over all those things that possess the ability to cause you to have desire or have aversion, to be at peace. I would think that most Buddhist scholars would say that the Mahayana are further from the original Buddhist teachings than the Theravada. Is he saying they are closer to the original?

I’m really interested in how one can be “stamped” with signlessness. Also, as an aside, as a person who has some experience as a monastic living with a zen master, I can fully attest that there definitely a field of influence for sure! In Japanese I think it’s refered to as “ba,” meaning simply field. But it is amazing. I’ve seen magical encounters of many different varieties. What’s really special is how the Roshi doesn’t even consider these encounters remarkable. Anyone who is interested in exploring the depths, I recommend you seek out a teacher and sangha body. They will absolutely bring these teachings to life.

When the scorching is done, space (mind) remains untouched and is just as it is and has always been - void - beginningless and without end, it is unborn. The wisdom of primordial self-perfecting awareness is the subjective clear light of mind and its nature is the objective clear light of emptiness. The universe is a self-created karmic experience and is a projection of the consciously arisen mind. Its appearance is like a dream and is void of self-existence. In the Lotus Sutra, the Buddha said: ‘The void of the first principle (i.e. the mind) is the reality of all existence. (Form is emptiness and emptiness is form. The form of the wisdom body and the emptiness of the truth body is Buddha-Dharma. In the mantra of the Heart Sutra, the Buddha said, ‘Tadyatha, Om Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi! Svaha!’ In this way, go beyond, beyond, totally beyond, completely beyond. Perfect wisdom! So be it! As it was for the Buddha, so it is for us. The Dharmakaya is without difference and this why it is inconceivable.

Awesome breakdown as always, thnxs brodhisattva 🙏. It is interesting to note that the term " swarthy" applied derogatorily to Buddhists is probably reflective of the dark skin degradation by Aryan invaders that is seem in other suttas like the Pali Ambattha sutta where Ambattha calls the Sakae " kanha", or "black": the Buddha goes on to explain that in the past the noble rishi named " Kanha", Sanskrit "Krishna", eas named because when he eas born he asked his mother to wash away the black from his skin. A close parallel is found in the Aesopian fable jointly titled Washing the Ethiopian White and The Dirty Indian. The seeming conflation between Ethiopians snd Indians exists because modern scholars have dropped the term Asiatic Ethiopian attested from Homer down to Herodotus
