I have the same problem. So at the end what was the problem? We change egr, all sensor and again code pops out.

Are the 2 rods just used to help position the clutch brake then remove after installation

The two rods helps you open and close the clutch brake easier.

Yes, it was a bad thermostat and I also just changed the cap as well.

I just kept spinning it and pulling back a little with a ratchet till the whole brass insert and plug came out. Held the insert with vise grips and removed plug from the insert. Cleaned the brass insert off with degreaser real good and the hole where the insert pushes back into the oil pan. Then finished up a final wipe down with 90% alcohol. Once they were dry, I applied JBweld around the outside of the insert and also on the oil pan where the insert pushes back into. I then tapped the insert back in with the plug out a little bit and once fully seated wipe down any excess. Then I let it sit for 2 days before fully tightening plug and putting oil back in. Worked great, no leaks and super strong hold

I work for a fleet and our DD13s leak from the oil pan gasket all the time, Ive had some come in, not even 150k and the oil pan gasket is leaking. Not this bad on other engine makes. Detroit needs to do better imo.
