Fail?? I don’t think so. Those things are beasts and run forever. Yes, it drinks more fuel than Americans drink beer, but you can’t kill them. Fail? Blame our Government for insisting on fuel standards instead of letting the consumers decide.

The Ford Excursion didn’t fail. Ford failed the Excursion! They created it then neglected it with minor improvements in its five year span. Replacing the reliable 7.3L diesel engine with the problematic 6.0L diesel engine didn’t help either.

We built 58 units per hour at the San Jose Assembly Plant. Both Pinto & Mustang combined. Identical unibody construction. In 1974 we added entire 2nd shift to keep up production. Often 6 days per week 2 shifts. Assembly penetration was normally Mustang every 5th job +/-. Later years Capri was added as well. Original V6 motors were from Germany. 302 came later. They were excellent cars made very well. Not a race car as the oil embargo entirely changed the car market. MPG was the focus not HP. IMO these cars would sell today.

I thought it was funny that a Dodge Dart Swinger was the first car shown in this video - because nearly all Darts had vinyl tops back then. To me, adding a vinyl top was a way of adding a second color to the car exterior that usually matched the interior. It was sort of a follow up to two tone paint colors in the 50s and early 60s. In the early 60s, usually just the roof was painted a different color. Then starting in the mid 60s, instead of a different color painted roof, they added a different color vinyl top. Though sometimes cars had the same color vinyl top as the body - which to me made little sense. I always liked vinyl tops, but as car styles changed and we had less chrome and more aerodynamic body styling, there was no way they would have worked on most cars built past the mid 80s.

We were looking for my first ride in 1975. I regret not trying harder to drive a manual. Because of that I missed out on some AMC products that would've made an excellent first car. I liked the styling of that 2dr hardtop Matador from 1972.

@@ThisOldCarChannel While that might be THIER planned and stated agenda, didn't work on me. My very first car in 1960 was a 51 Kaiser.....NEVER highly advertised, and over a period of twenty years, I owned and drove four of them....and by installing much more vigorous engines (1st, 265 Chevy and later, 389 Pontiacs into a '54 Kaiser) drove one for almost 25 years all over the western half of the USA....the ultra rare two-door model....only 50 made....every place I stopped, always curious people with questions. Also, just FYI....I have MUTED ALL commercials ever since the 'mute' button was first invented. Also-also.....for me TV has become so boring, other than watching the evening news, NEVER watch it. (You-tube is both so much more fun and is interactive) I now have driven a Pontiac Fiero exclusively since 1989, am on my 3rd one (V6 5 speed). Too long of a story to go into here, but bought it in 2010 with only 19K on it, flew back to MN and drove it back to my northern CA coastal home. It had formerly belonged to a dealership in MN, the owner kept it in FL and drove it only when on vacation, and is now nearing 90K....just broke in! As an auto mechanic since the early 60's, I have always effected ALL of my repairs/servicing until just recently, and am about to turn 84 in ten days. My current mechanic has made me promise...when I finally do decide to part with it, please give him first opportunity. About new cars? My 'No Nonsense' Aussie wife feels the same about cars....has NEVER bought a new one, was driving a Saturn station wagon when I first met her, still is, and is now on her 3rd one. But first, my former Aussie wife and I, plan to make two trips...one to view Niagara Falls (She has never seen, but I have) and a second one to visit what was formerly termed Ayers Rock in AU, but as a bow to changing times, has returned to its former Aborigine name, Uluru. Also, just as an aside.....As a lifetime amatuer astronomer, I have traveled all over the world primarily to view total solar eclipses, have now seen ten, the last one in Argentina several years ago, and have now visited 19 countries in the process.....but opted out of the recent one here in the states.....just didn't feel up to the hassle where motels and all accomodations (food and etc) often triple in price....and, dealing with the stifilling (but highly excited) crowds. Lastly....I started riding a motorcycle when I was 16, took my 15 year old brother with me, left off on what ended up being a 3500 mile ride on a 'mission' to relocate a 'lost' uncle....and did. Just recently, at the age of 84, gave my 'last' motorcycle to my youngest son....the very same Honda ST 1100 that in 2013, started in CA and rode around the entire USA on a mission to 'bag' the 13 states I had never previously been in before, ALL east of the MS River....and did....1st 'new' state....Georgia.....and, ended up with a $13K motel bill....but, as it is my stated philosophy to NOT pay ANY interest, wrote a check. Of course.....my 1st house on one acre of land tucked in behnd the premier golf course in the area.....I paid 8K for, paid it off in five years and for over 40 years, never made a house payment. When my 1st wife ran off with a former friend, it appraised for 440K, and I had to give her half, but was down to less than $70k when my 2nd wife and I decided to finally combine households...the house just resold for $880K..so I now have some money for trips....a little "Traveling Music, Please?" BHE

I am currently restoring my 1976 Buick Regal which is virtually identical to the same year Olds Cutlass. I ordered the car new with a vinyl roof - probably the worst option I got on it. The only significant rust it has now is from the roof cover. It trapped water between the back window and the front edge of the trunk lid. Not only did that panel rust but so did a portion of the trunk floor. It will still have a vinyl top but had I had it do over, it would not.

I hear you. I have a 75 Grand Prix. Low mileage under 50K. Bought it from the original owner. Garage kept. Only place with rust is under the 1/2 vinyl top. Minor bubbling at the bottom of the back window. When I get that fixed, I won’t be putting the vinyl top back on as long as the repairs are done well. Also had a 76 Toronado with a full padded vinyl top. That car had absolutely 0 rust under it.

@@mikee2923 I ordered the Regal with the base 231 V-6. It was the old odd-fire version and got shaky as it aged. I replaced it later with a 350 Buick V-8, an easy conversion. The motor mounts were the same, I had lengthen the wires going down to the starter and I removed the fan shroud extension. It weighs more so, without changing the springs, it has a little rake to it. The car has barely over 80,000 miles and the engine less than 5,000.

@@dandrane1251 Good move. I bet it runs a lot better, too. Those early Buick 3.8s were kinda questionable especially in a car that heavy. Buick 350 much better choice. Hope it’s a 4bbl. Nice car.

@@mikee2923Yes to 4-bbl. Hardly any accessories for the Buick 350. I have chrome valve covers for when I get it back but most speed or dress-up is for the V-6 or the 400/425/455 V-8.

Didn't fail. V10 triton and 7.3 powerstroke are the monsters of mayhem. These trucks are bad to the bone and are the king of SUVs. I drove a V10 4x4 on a round trip and it ran like some kind of freight train out of hell that glided over any road imperfection. Was well worth some extra gas money.
