Thank you for letting us into your world and allowing us to see the world through your eyes. I am soon to be 65 and have been bicycle touring from 17yrs old when I did Canada to Mexico with a buddy in 1976. Have always wanted to cross Europe on a bicycle and doing it in style like you two have is on my bucket list. Thanks and looking forward to the next series because I’m willing to bet you are riding somewhere right now! Cheers!

Thank you Doug, appreciate having you along! The year of the Bikecentennial! I bet you two were the only ones going north to south that summer. I regret that I didn't discover bike touring earlier in life, when I had my freedom and my youth. We are eying a trip from north to south in Europe for next year, but this year Julianna is home helping out with a brand new grand daughter, so I'll be doing a couple of small rides myself. Take care and we'll be back!

What a lovely way to end the series. For many weeks I've had one of your videos to watch but now we've come to the end of your long and wonderful trip. Geneva is a very wealthy city but very interesting. We were lucky to have friends there and stayed in their house. Our bedroom had views of the mountains and it was a delight to open the curtains. Hi Roland & Julianna, I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Zurich. I worked there for over 30 years, so I could biased.. but it does have it charms although it won't make most tourist lists. Nice that you got to try the autumn menus as well, as I think they are something special. In the German speaking part, we call the cents Rappen, so its Francs & Rappen for us. Thanks for a great tour report and looking forward to hearing about your next adventure.

Thank you! I was truly stumped as to what they were called. Centimes was my best guess, but I figured that was wrong. Rappen! good to know. The older I get the more I appreciate the less touristy places. Zurich feels like a city of locals, it's beautiful without being a big tourist draw. We will see you soon, no doubt!

I really enjoyed the series on your bike tour of France. Great photgraphy and Incredibly well put together, a very professional job. Thank you! 👍🚴‍♀👍🚴 The thing I liked about it the most, was how much you two enjoyed it, and especially Roland's appreciation of all put before him. Roland, Julianna: The whole adventure is really impressive! My congratulations! What beautiful landscapes France has. What good people in France, what good food and drinks. But above all, what a good couple you make, Roland and Julianna. It is a pleasure to see you share that respect you have for each other. It is obvious that you love each other very much. On the other hand, my congratulations for the production, editing, video, and audio so careful in all the chapters. Roland, you have done it with great sensitivity. I have you like my family. If one day you decide to travel to Spain, here is your house in Toledo with me, my wife and my daughter. I invite you to make a stop in this beautiful medieval city. I encourage you to plan a route through Spain. It will not disappoint you. Spain has charming places and great weather. Cheer up! I am also a cycle tourist and I have in mind to do your route in France. Your adventure is going to help me a lot the day I do it. Hugs!

I finally finished following this French tour, and I must say I loved every bit of it. I've been doing annual summer bike tours in Europe since a few years before my retirement in 2015. I've always been solo (my wife's arthritis doesn't allow her to come along, though she's gracious enough to give me a kitchen pass each year for a few weeks). I've also always camped along the way. As I'm now nearing 72 years old I'm encouraged to see how you had a very enjoyable tour staying in hostels, B&BS, hotels, etc. along the way. I believe I'll be trying that out on my tour from Vienna, Austria to my home in Aachen, Germany next summer. As you both so often mentioned, and as was Victor said, the biggest joy I feel in cycle touring is the pleasant surprises you encounter almost every day. I will now go back a year to follow your trip across the U.S. I imagine that presented challenges much different to a riverbank tour through France. Thanks for the videos. They're a way to include some extra "tours" over my days.

Hello Charles, so glad you enjoyed the France series. Europe is such an amazing place for touring, with routes and trails virtually everywhere (at least in the west). We love the lodging in Europe as staying in towns feels like we're getting a bit more culture. Also, staying in hotels lightens the load a bit. In the US, especially in the west, it's all about the wilderness, and camping seems like such an important part of that experience. We're actually planning a trip now, for Spring/Summer starting in Amsterdam. I would love to ask you a few specific questions about our plans if you wouldn't mind. Right now, the plan is Amsterdam>Brugge>Aachen>Rhine Gorge>Main River>Romantische Strasse > Claudia Augusta>Venice. Have you crossed the Alps? Any preferred crossing? Also (since it's your hometown) would the Vennbahn to the Moselle be a nice indirect way to get to the Rhine River? Your expertise and experience would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again, hope you enjoy the US series. Definitely some challenges on that route! Cheers!

Hey! That's great for next year! If you do come through Aachen you'll need to spend a night or two with us. We'll give you a little tour of Aachen and eat dinner in the Ratskeller, the restaurant in the Rathaus which was completed in the first half of the 14th century. It was built on ruins dating to Charlemagne's reign. Brügge is worth two overnights. Or, one full day of touring. It is a beautiful city with many canals (thus, the name "Venice of the North). Between there and Aachen are also Ghent, Antwerp, Brussel, and Maastricht. I'd bypass Brussels simply because of the size of the city and the traffic. From Antwerp to Maastricht you can ride along the Albert Canal. You two have enough experience along canal paths to know the advantages. From Aachen the Vennbahn is a terrific route south. Mostly paved, flat (very slight incline into the Eifel / Ardenne), and well removed from traffic noise and cities. The stretch between Troisvierges and Vianden, LX can be a little tough. But, one you reach Vianden (after a breathtaking downhill), you'll be riding along the Sauer River to the Mosel. Echternach, LX is a great place to stop for a visit. The Mosel is beautiful. But, it is deceptively long as it twists and turns so much that what looks not to be so far on the map is actually a zillion kms. Ha! A zillion beautiful kms of the river, beautiful towns, steep hillside vineyards, etc. It can be quite busy in the summer time in the most famous towns. Thus, accomodation is best sought in the smaller in-between towns. Same to be said for the Rhein from Koblenz south to Mainz. (North of Koblenz along the Rhein is very industrial, so not a good tourist destination.). From Mainz onwards your guess is as good as mine. I haven't cycled there since 1968 when I was living near Rüsselsheim on the Rhein (I lived in Mörfelden when my dad was stationed near Frankfurt and I was going to Frankfurt American High School). I've ridden the EuroVelo Rhein route from Andermatt, Switzerland to Hook von Holland (just west of Rotterdam), but never over the Alps. All my younger routes involving lots of climbing were in Scandinavia. If you're ever looking for breathtaking scenery on a daily basis, with little traffic, I can only recommend Norway and Sweden. You can camp practically anywhere, and where you stay in a campground they almost always have nice little cottages to rent (you need to still use your sleeping bag, but they're clean and very nice. Great to be warm and dry, have a real mattress, etc. Bath facilities are usually those available for the campground.). My e-mail is charles.grinstead@aol.de if you're looking for some more info. I can also send you some pics. Happy New Year. -- (B.T.W., It's Dan. i.e., Charles D. Grinstead. My dad got to keep the Charles part.)

Good morning Dan. Apologize for the slow response. Julianna and I are down with a New Years case of covid and I'm kind of out of commission. Ha! After four years w/o Covid, Gudrun and I both tested positive on 23 December. That meant the holidays without seeing our daughters and isolating at home. We're both negative now, but not really feeling 100%. That'll get better soon I hope. My dad was also stationed near Frankfurt. I actually went to first grade in Kaiserslautern and high school in Frankfurt. I came to Germany as a 2nd Lt in 1983, but stayed to work in mobile telecommunications R&D when I left the AF in 1993. The rest is an old story. Married, kids, jobs, ...... Now Aachen is really home. Get well soon.

Getting well has proved elusive. It's been seven full days and still definitely in it. We didn't test this time; this could be flu for all we know. Its frustrating because the weather here, although not ideal, is rideable and we just have no energy whatsoever. Maybe it'll turn around today! When we attempted our cross-country tour, we got Covid 200 miles from our finish in Maine. Had to isolate for about 14 days, but we finished. Still, we were dealing with exhaustion for a long time afterward.

Appeared in my YT feed, yesterday (YT algorithm must have picked up that I had an interest in the ViaRhôna ?), you (and any other riders you’ve inspired who’d consider riding the Via Rhôna) might like to check one Sheelagh Daly YT video, uploaded a week ago, title reads “When you just want to QUIT | Bikepacking France”. She was riding the ViaRhôna, Southbound, with the Mistral in her sails, pushing her, ( not sure she realized ?), then she left the ViaRhôna, direction unspecified, Mistral tailwind became a crosswind, see what happened. When you cycled the ViaRhôna, northbound, last year, you were extremely lucky, weather wise, had the Mistral blown, it would have been a very different experience.

Should memory serve, you experienced mild headwinds upon reaching the Atlantic Ocean by the Loire estuary ? Perfectly normal and expected, since the prevalent wind, as we discussed already, blows from the West, most of the year (check these trees and bushes leaning all in the same direction). This year, it feels like September has arrived early with depressions over the Atlantic on a bandwagon, following each other’s, every 4-5 days, bringing much needed rain, with little respite, in between.

Hello to the two of you, I am so happy to have found your you tube channel. Your film making and editing is first class, with great music and narration. You made the viewer feel like they were along for the ride. It was nice to see the route to get a better idea of where you were in each video. I was wondering how the adjustment was once you got home? I am sure there were somethings that you may have done differently? After my cross country ride I had a hard time the first couple of weeks home. I missed the daily routine of just getting on my bike and riding. I missed being outdoors and enjoying nature. I still have a couple of your videos to view regarding this trip. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed following you, and I wish the two of happy trails as you decide where your next adventure will be. I will keep an eye out for those videos. I am a fan! Thanks so much for following, Carmen. It IS an adjustment coming home. the simplicity of having no balls to juggle, just getting to the next town, it is our meditation. But we both love being home as well, with a fire burning, our feet up, the cats on our laps. I find I need the balance. I just got home from a fabulous tour in Slovenia with my daughters. And I'm loving the October sunshine, here in our backyard, just relaxing. Life is a balance.

Hello again! I would go south out of Geneva along the Rhone to the Med. After that, it depends on how much of the Pyrenees you want to tackle, or avoid. Our route was along the Canal des Deux Mers, north of the Pyrenees, and very flat. You could take that to Bordeaux or somewhere east of there and drop down. We were advised that when there wasn't a trail in place just find a route with D roads, and in our experience those were great roads for cycling. If you're up for serious climbs, the Pyrenees are, of course, a world-class cycling destination. But definitely more for unloaded road bikes, less so for touring.

What's next??? Three suggestions. 1) Italy, it's so artsy, a little hilly, and a little edgy. Do you like pasta prepared 300 different ways? 2) Spain & Portugal, a foodie's paradise, the people are so warm and friendly, some hills, and do you like fish? 3) Denmark and the Netherlands, flat as a pancake, the food is kind of eh, but the nicest and friendliest people on the whole planet, and these people have a great sense of humor.

Hey William, Im doing a couple of shorter rides this year, both in the US and Europe, but next year we're sketching out a possible route from Amsterdam to Venice. Definitely spending some time in the Low Countries before heading south. We shall see! We've done a bit of Italy and of course LOVED it, and I was going to do a route through part of Spain this year with my three grown kids, but we opted for Slovenia instead due to drought conditions.

Salut R&J, - Farewell video (Au revoir France) ✅ - Épilogue (with the É, as it should)✅ - Appendix 1 ❔ 😉 One last word, Disclaimer Political (or is it social?) correctness never were my forte, riding bikes has kept the two of you fit physically and mentally fit. Touring stimulates much more than your legs, everyday your brains solve new equations (navigation, resupplies, accommodation, bike maintenance, interactions with locals, language barrier that you *have to* overcome), babysitting will not.
@TheBicycleTourists

Salut! I would say helping to raise a child is one of the most mentally challenging experiences one can have, if you do it right. I do have an appendix coming at some point, but its been honestly very hard to be inside editing during these summer months. As far as the language barrier goes, there are simply too many languages to learn! (How's THAT for a classic American response?) Take care Claude, see you soon!

.... and as usual, I’ll wave my Star-Spangled Banner 🇺🇸 ! North of 42m Americans are native Spanish speakers + 12m bilingual Americans. A language, Spanish spoken, by circa 600m people worldwide. There is apparently a new trend amongst young Americans whose ancestors originated from Germany which lead them to trace their roots in Germany and spend extended periods of time there and learn German. Germany which is, I believe, home of the largest US community in Europe (US military personnel not accounted for), how many bilingual Americans is that ? Ditto, religious communities in the US who emigrated from Alsace (France) and neighboring German regions on the other side of the Rhine River which still speak a language closely related to modern German (people who would learn effortlessly Alsacien, in no time). French is slowly going extinct in Louisiana, I am afraid. Anecdotal, 33,362 French speakers in Maine (2022). May this European citizen remind you that the US are huge, the complexity of its history is fascinating, so I am very usure whether something “typically American” exist as far as languages are concerned ? 😉
@TheBicycleTourists
@TheBicycleTourists Жыл бұрын
Fluent bilingualism seems to be a rarity in the states compared to what I've seen in Europe. but then you all can't go too far there without having to deal with the language barrier, so there is more incentive. When Americans go to Mexico, they usually visit the American resorts, so no need to translate. But that's my impression. Looking it up, we have something like 23% bilingual. Which is a lot more than I would give credit for. Thanks for holding up our reputation. on all matter of subjects. I love America too!

At some [peak immigration] point, that ratio must have been much higher, first generation children of immigrants +, obviously, their parents, often were bilingual. A 100-ish, years ago, I remember reading an article about that, there were still a significant number of newspapers in the US, not printed in English, for populations which couldn’t, yet, speak English and bilingual readers. Newspapers in German and Japanese went under first, for obvious reasons. Figures are a little bit old, in 2013, 2.8m non Hispanic Americans spoke Spanish at home, the huge majority tracing their roots everywhere in Europe but Spain. Agreed, nobody bothers learning a language they’ll use on vacation, 2weeks/year..... but can you 🚲 ride the Baja Divide without speaking a word of Spanish ? Incentives, again, young Europeans/ young Americans are no different : competitive advantage on the job market, interest in Expat positions, much cooler to start a career at Renault Argentina or VW Design in Spain than as a manager of a rural French or German 🚘 factory. .... and last but not least, love.

Hello Roland, I truly enjoyed your French cycling trip. I was impressed in your video skills as it was quite professional and well composed. The editing must have been laborious. I also crossed France by bike following a photo album my grandfather took in 1917 as a soldier in WWI. I found every photo and retook the exact same photo 107 years later. In fact a local tv station did a human interest story on it. My question what camera equipment did you have and what would you recommend? Thank you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXPSpoBuhLWHmcU

Thank you! The editing was very time intensive but it's something I love to do, it's my new creative outlet so I look forward to it. I love the idea of your project. I decided to keep my cameras simple; we use iPhones and goPros with the help of the drone when i'm not crashing it. I try to keep the photography something you can do on the fly, this way it feels more like spontaneous glimpses than studied shots.
