It’s simply hard to imagine a time in history like this. Blacks were so mistreated. Especially the soldiers who fought for the very country that wouldn’t allow them to eat in their restaurants. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Frankly, I doubt Temple thought twice about doing this - blackface routines were popular in vaudeville and the popularity continued as the film industry appropriated it for mass entertainment. Simply, it was an accepted performance convention in Hollywood until the end of the 30s, at which point the practice was eliminated as perceptions changed and blackface was largely viewed as racially insensitive. While I don't doubt older performers, vastly more aware, may have had discomfort doing it even before it was discontinued, Temple would have been too young to understand any of that. Her job was to show up, wear the costume, speak her lines and hit her marks - and look cute while doing it.

I'd think the polish is an example of the difference in the way whites and blacks were treated. He was rude to her when she was black and kind to her when she was white.

"This won't age badly, will it?" "No, of course not, Al. This will never be looked upon as intensely racist and offensive." "You sure?" "As sure as I was back in 1928 that alcohol prohibition wasn't a total and complete disaster."

Yes, and it resulted in a copyright strike. The clip was 10 minutes long and made it through the Content ID check, and then it was taken down a couple of weeks later.

I could have done without that blackface scene period. I think it was totally unnecessary. She looked crazy. I also could have done without the singing numbers that she wasn't singing. They couldn't call it Torch Song then I guess😅. I love Joan Crawford's acting but this picture is not one of my favorites from her. Maidie Norman who played her assistant had gotten a master's degree in drama in 1937.She also taught at universities during her cayas an actress. She played again with Joan & Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane as the housekeeper. She also acted in several other films & TV shows.
