Sir, what would recommend for electric vs gas for fuel for a water heater. This would be the only thing you left out
@KennethCrickmore-sl8jl15 сағат бұрын
I have a 120V electric tankless water eater that is half the size of an average brief case and weighs about 5 LBS . It's set at 120 deg. and we almost never run out of hot water.\. the water only taks a fw moments to get fully hot at the shower head for nice hot shower. I got it at my local Home Depot for under $200 .. I think it's the best investment I/ve made for my home.

To say "upgrading the gas line" is a "total myth" is just poor education to KZbin viewers. Gas lines need to be sized according to the length of the run, the pressure in them, and the BTU of the appliance using the fuel. A standard tanked, 40 gallon water heater, will be 34,000 to 40,000 BTU. Tankless water heaters can be up to 200,000 BTU. If you have a long run of 1/2" pipe for your old water heater, it won't be big enough to supply a 200,000 BTU appliance. A gas valve and draft inducer are NOT a damn turbocharger that pulls the gas through the line. What a line of total BS. I would never hire this guy if he believes what he is saying. And just FYI, I work for a gas utility and have sized gas piping in homes when we add appliances. This is one of those times when size really matters 😉

Any worries about trapping moisture and rotting the wood under the foam?

In theory, this area should be protected by an exterior vapor barrier plus siding at a minimum. If water does get it, it should have multiple ways to escape including down into the block below. However using spray foam on rafters has been problematic, to your point, so much so that 5 of the top 20 UK lenders will not offer you a mortgage with such an installation!!

The myth you mentioned about tankless not being able to heat really cold water can be true depending on the specs of the tankless waterheater. We had a Bosch unit installed that worked well in the summer, but when incoming water got really cold in the winter, the unit couldn't keep up.

I have a similar wolverine boot. Moc toe, foam wedge, rubber tread. Absolutely love them. Unfortunately discontinued though still available on certain sites online. My only complaint is the waterproofing. Even though it is marketed as "breathable" my socks are soaked at the end of the day. I'd rather a well made non-waterproof version.

What’s your opinion on gas vs electric. In our previous home we had natural gas and when we put in a tankless water heater it was gas. In our current house gas is not available so we have an electric tank hot water heater. I haven’t ventured into a tankless because I’ve been told electric tankless water heaters are not efficient and cost more to operate. What is your opinion?

We had in the Netherlands tankless water heater in the kitchen . They were very small. You could take a shower upstairs in the bathroom , but if somebody wanted to do the dishes at the same time there was a problem. We talking in the end of 1950. Now our home has floor heating with an electric tank heater on demand. A Gas heater on demand for showers and we have 3 large showers in our home, with no problems..

I have a Renai tankless water heater and I live in Alberta and after 6 years had to replace copper heat exchanger, but before that happened 120 degrees was not enough, took forever to get hot water, plumber came and set to 126 Andy a dip switch adjustment, then it was better. But you never mentioned water flow, you need lots of flow for it to heat the water so a huge waste of water and so is allowing your kids to shower endlessly, kind of defeats the purpose. Also my water is filtered before it gets to the unit. You never mentioned circulating a mix of water and a special acidic liquid to clean out build up in the exchanger. As you may have guessed, not a fan.

A water-water heat pump would be nice... Soft geothermal heat pump with the earth as a heat sink/source. Then you might not need to even need a boiler (a wood stove might be wise backup)
@mechanical-hub4 күн бұрын
Geo would be exponentially higher and no more efficient, would still require backup for the heat emitters in the house. Geo would use the same or more electricity as compared to this system as well, I have a hard time seeing the net benefits tbh.
@tanner38013 күн бұрын
@mechanical-hub is the reason for backup not for low outdoor temps? For me it would be nice because at night in winter, my heat pump barely works.

Are there any maintenance issues in having a tankless water heater?
@Slowhand8716 күн бұрын
Actually I shower at the full 120degree. I got the Rianni 10.1 gone. I switched over from a tank. The Rianni I have uses 199k btu lucky for me I already had switched over my furnace to a Heat pump that has an electric heat strip. So I had the 1.25” gas pipe already installed. My cost was $2,000 for the Rianni including tax then $600 for the extra parts including plywood to attach to the wall ect. It took me a solid 20 hrs including clean up to install make multiple trips to the store ect . I would think a pro would do it in 8 hrs easily. I’m going to invoice it at $1500 labor installation bringing the total to $4,100 for tax write off which I get 30% back (or tax reduction not sure on that part). That’s $1,230 plus a $250 back from my local utilities so it potentially cost me $1,120 which is the same price as a direct vent gas water heater and with proper maintenance should far out live and operating cost of a tank. I did test our city water and we have soft water but I will still flush the system once a year. Oh and a recirculating valve was installed.
@fatkid2786 күн бұрын
They suck I hate our tank less takes forever to get hot water to our shower. Can't wash with hot water because these new washer use less water so by the time the washer fills it's just cold water in the washer I wish we had our old water heater.
@user-my2tg4wc4r7 күн бұрын
All i know from my experience of my daughter and son in laws tankless is that they cant get hot water to the whole house. They have had multiple plumbers out to figure it out but still it fails to get hot water to the guest bathroom and takes forever to get hot to anything else.
@paulmarc-aurele55087 күн бұрын
I piped in a Wiel McLain Plus 80 tank so that it was the only thing that gave my boiler a heat demand and pulled all my heat zones from it so I got my domestic water and my buffer tank from the same tank. To accomplish this safely I used a thermostatic mixer on the DHW and a wider range aquastat to provide a heat call for my boiler. I got my heat from water to water geothermal and a wood boiler.
