Rugby is actually called rugby football. Apparently it started when a ball got popped playing football (soccer) at a school and is the father of American football. The helmets you see are not for contact, it's to prevent what's known as cauliflower ear. It's been proven that the NFL has worse situations with concussion than rugby. Nevertheless a player would be old at 35. Cruciate ligaments are normally what stops them playing. Imagine getting hit that hard in the legs at full tilt for 20 years. You realistically need to be about 14stone to play and sub 11 100m. The league is paid ok now but the internationals, which are the biggest (union) are not paid a penny. They get sponsors and stuff but not outright payment. And the rules are far too complex for a comment.

US reactions are always funny when they ask 'where's the robocop protection gear'...Rugby was invented about 50 years before US football and the US use to play with no robocop gear either...They were unprotected for 40 years or so...but then they went soft and added all the impressive padding over health concerns which Rugby never did...As for the word 'soccer' it was a British word first...as was words like 'fall' for 'autumn' and 'aks' instead of 'ask'...There are many words like this coined in Britain and then lost that the US kept

eeeeshh, as we call it, the girl you hope's she got it, got it. The rule in rugby is if you go for the try, or touch down as you know it. They can slide in, or roll in, as long as its on momentum. So on wetter days, you will find people diving for the line from 5 meters or so. Just because the wet surface will guide you home, or over the try line.

Rugby is said to be the game for all sizes. It's meant to be played by everyone. Size and speed sort themselves out in the end. You can pick a bulky team, but you may play against a more agile team. So it's tactical.
