I saw "Pretty in Pink" several times, however most of the others slipped off my radar. I've heard of most of them, and saw clips from a few. "Heathers" I have been wanting to see. Somehow I quoted it as a kid in 1990 or so without realising what show I was quoting. :)
@RetroEntertainmentArchiveАй бұрын
Hey, Jen, thank you for commenting. Yeah, I hadn't seen "Heathers" myself until years later when I bought the DVD. I kept hearing famous quotes from the film by friends who seen it and had the DVD themselves but I didn't clue in at the time on what they were saying until I actually seen it myself. "What is your damage, Heather?" "The extreme always seems to make an impression." "Chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, darling!" "Ich Lüge" "Grow up, Heather, bulimia is so ‘87!" "Lick it up, baby! Lick it up!" “We’re all born marked for evil.” "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" LOL, now I know where those quotes came from. 😁 😆

you don't need to know about bit rates and technical aspects. just stand one foot away from your TV while a DVD is playing and look at the obvious digital compression noise that you can see and how blurry the image is up close, then popping a Blu-ray and look at how much clearer it is, then pop in a 4K Blu-ray and see that there is even slightly more clarity than with the regular Blu-ray. when you're standing 1 ft away from the TV it's pretty easy to see the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray and even a Blu-ray from a 4k (depending on the quality of the master) a poorly mastered movie will look worse on Blu-ray than it will on DVD because the Blu-ray brings out all the details of just how bad the mastering job is. a good Master is the most important thing. as far as audio quality it pretty much peeked at the maximum of what a human is physically able to hear back when the audio CD came out in the 80s. 48 khz audio is high def audio and CDs are 44.1. audiophiles are a joke. they will tell you all kinds of snake oil Garbage about you got to get a tube amp and you have to get a $4,000 record player. they think everything analog is good and everything digital is bad. what they don't realize is all those records they've collected were originally mixed and mastered on digital equipment before transfer to vinyl. digital recording has been around since the 70s. and that tube amp they're using is actually rolling off the higher frequencies from the music and making it sound "warmer" so it's actually just distorting the music. audiophiles claim that they're all about hearing the clarity but they're actually just fans of distortion.

Technical knowledge of filming, ratios, etc. is appreciable but pretty much a subject onto itself. Sometimes it's worth mentioning when there are multiple versions of the same film, but that shouldn't be a requirement.

I had watched the entire stretch of Super Friends episodes from 1973-85 as a kid, as well as the late 70’s Filmation series, but I was about 22 before I first found out that Filmation had a Batman series in the 60’s. It was an acquired taste with what felt like more stock footage sequences than He-Man. It was a refreshing experience that he threw punches (which would be outlawed shortly under parental group protest), but it’s a fun series if you’re willing to to put on those rose-colored ‘hey, it’s Batman’ glasses.
@RetroEntertainmentArchive2 ай бұрын
Yeah, true enough, Batman 1968 is an acquired taste, no doubt. In spite of the frequent use of stock animation sequences which became Filmation's stock and trade in the studio's later work, it still has that kind of quaint little kick of comics-inspired nostalgia for me whenever I view it. Heck, it still has that oddly quirky charm, even viewing it on Blu-ray today.

Thank you very much. Yeah, I tent to find this cartoon gets overshadowed quite a bit in the public's mind by Batman: The Animated Series. As I had mentioned, the 1968 Filmation was and still is the first animated show featuring Batman and Robin, so it has that going for it. That being said, however, BTAS certainly deserves the praise it's gained over the course of thirty years because it broke new ground in terms of animation and in terms of telling great Batman stories.

Blockbuster is one of the iconic American brands that were imprinted on me during my '89 vacation and '92 immigration to the States. There were other, more hole-in-the-wall rental stores but my bros. and I appreciated Blockbuster for allowing us to rent Nintendo game cartridges in addition to video cassette tapes. The video rental store was a real part of culture, and I recall an episode of WINGS were a main character's dissatisfaction with service factored into the plot. I'm sure there are many other references in older media that would seem unusual to today's generation, the way I felt when looking back at the public phone book in the first TERMINATOR film.

Apart from that, since we previously talked about hammer films, there was also a very specialized video rental store in downtown athens, that only had horror movies, including of course all the old hammer films and we would visit there often. I don't know if you're into the Star Wars films, Larry.
