Fuel filter? Lots of the new fuel filters have a check valve inside them to prevent the fuel from running backward out of the carb draining the float bowl. At least in my C20 and C30 (85 and 88) had them. My K5s don't use the Rochester filters in the carbs. Some of these new check valves don't seat well, some get stuck slightly open. That causes <two> issues. 1) drains the float bowl empty causing hard starts and 2) only allows a few lbs fuel pressure causing the truck to run out of gas under full throttle. Drove me crazy as I put a new filter in last year but when I pulled it out I could barely push the check valve open inside the filter. Once it moved it got stuck maybe 2-3% open. The truck sat for 20 years. Even though I drained the fuel and added a new filter / pump, still had some gunk hiding between the tanks. Is a dual 20gal tanks / camper special

My dad bought a brand new 1977 scout. It was hunter green. He had it until he passed in 2001. It was very well kept, we sold it and the person said he was going to do some things to it and would send us some pics. But never heard back from him. Lots of memories in that scout. Our had bucket sets with a console and no carpet, rubber floors. You’ve got me hooked I’m going to watch all the episodes to see how it turns out.👍

Hi there, my selector Valve was also leaking from the vent port especially when switching tanks. I got air in the system after switching tanks and I’m blaming the valve because I don’t see any other leaks in the fuel lines . Do you have to prime the system after replacing the valve or will it bleed by itself if u let idle?

check the glow plug inhibit switch, it’s at the back of the engine about even with the glow plugs. Take the harness off, and run a jumper wire from one side of harness to the other. That was my problem, inhibit switch was stuck saying my coolant was over 125° or whatever its rated for

They’re starting to go up in value. If it’s not super clean the I wouldn’t pay a penny over $5k and that’s generous. Just the panels to fix this one were like $5k. Realistically I’d say up to $3k on an ok one in New England. If you restore it you could get like $30k for it but it’s a lot of work. But they are picking up in value

If you have removed the grille in front of the windshield to attach a screen on the bottom side to keep leaves, twigs and other debris from collecting and causing body rot [ a GREAT idea!], there's one more thing you should do while it's off: The windshield wiper motor is tucked away underneath the windshield on the passenger side. It's a royal pain in the neck to access. There's a tiny clip at the end of the wiper motor that keeps the wiper linkage attached to the motor. If the wipers are stressed too much from ice or anything else, that tiny clip will pop off, fall down into the fenderwell, and it will be gone into eternity. So take a strong double-sided magnet and plop that sucker down right at the top of the fenderwell between the top of the fenderwell and the wiper motor. That way if that tiny wonky clip should pop off, hopefully that robust magnet will grab it and hold onto it so it can be reattached. Believe me, it’s worth the effort. WARNING: Before reattaching the wiper linkage to the wiper motor, turn the ignition key to Accessories or On and ALLOW THE WIPER MOTOR TO COMPLETELY CYCLE OUT UNTIL IT STOPS before reattaching the wiper linkage! Otherwise you will be in for a rude surprise: the wiper arms will go flying off the edge of the windshield, possibly damaging the wiper blades. (No joy in that!) I learned about these things the hard way; while plowing snow in a supermarket parking lot during a snowfall one night with a '79 Scout II (304, 4-speed, Meyers Power-Angle plow) in South Plainfield, New Jersey, the wipers became stressed by the snow & ice buildup and that rotten little clip went bye-bye. That was a night to remember, all right! But that truck was a plowing fool; unstoppable. As I was driving down the streets, people were waving money at me to plow out their driveway… BTW: I have heard that the gas filler tube is attached to the fender with one screw [don’t know if it’s true or not; just sayin’] so you might want to make sure there’s no rust at that screw. If it’s true, and that filler tube breaks while you’re putting gas in, you will end up pouring gasoline on a hot exhaust pipe, which is NOT RECOMMENDED!!! :)
@roussmotorco
@roussmotorco 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the tips!! I ended up rebuilding the filler neck area. It’s held in by a couple bolts but it was rusty in there. I’ll add that screen and I’ll put a magnet by the motor. I’ll probably replace the motor too so I don’t have to do it a week after the truck is fully restored haha

I drove a 73 Scout from the rustbelt to TX in 76. OK roads were freshly blacktopped, and some were pulled over with tire issues on the steaming pavement. I used a sturdy stick as a cruise control, but still got some blisters from the floorboard on my gas pedal foot. Stopped at a few rivers just to cool off. I was lucky to pull behind a few big rigs that allowed me in their draft. My Scout was white, with white spokers, and Armstrong tires. That 258 6 banger was a bad ass motor with plenty of guts. Man, I wish I had a nice old scout. Got a pretty nice 2000 GMC right now.

That was all done before I picked it up. The only thing the owner’s mechanic didn’t replace was the coil. Now that I’ve done the body work I found out that the fuel line was crushed by the cab being so rotted it was pinching it against the frame

Doing a bad ass job on this build started watching a few months ago. Awesome to see how far you've come on it. Bummer tho ive let two ridiculously low priced scouts pass due to the front cab mounts being rotten and pushed up into the floor. But after watching your videos they dont look too horrible. Also i like how you used Square tubing for the inner rockers and having the little extra to hang down. Cant wait for more videos to come!

Had a '79 Scout II when it was new, but after a couple of years it started rusting badly. I didn't have the tools or skill that you do, but I tried my best to stop the rust -- to no avail. You're doing a great job! These Scouts are worth restoring.
