Well the song is about them having to leave their girlfriends home in Ohio while they go out on tour. So the lines "cut my wrists and black my eyes' are metaphors. They are against self harm

Emo started out as being short for emotional hardcore coming out of the hardcore punk mixing sub genre and mixing it with some post punk and some 90’s sounds and creating a new sub genre, and they started mixing in some pop punk style

In my opinion you are thinking about this song in the wrong way. Not to say this song has a huge lyrical impact with its lyrics compared to other Slipknot songs. You are thinking too broad in some aspects of the song and too narrow in others. The chorus is much more narrow and straight forward than the rest of the song. What is the first thing a person does when they have a migraine to relieve the pressure? The finger and thumb are pushed into the corners of the eyes. You are giving this song less credit than it deserves for its lyrical content even though it's not incredibly deep compared to some other songs. It's hard to speak on the "Duality of man" in a narrow way.

I would really recommend watching the official video for this song. I have listened to metal since 1980 and didnt get into Slipknot till couple of years. I would start listening to Deep Purple "Child in Time", Black Sabbath any song, Judas Priest "Victim of changes", "Breaking the law", and later in your journey "Painkller", Iron Maiden "Run to the Hills" Hallow be thy name", "Number of the Beast", "wasted years". Ok that is your base and then you want to get into thrash metal: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax. Then you will be ready for Pantera which is groove metal. Then your journey will bring you to Nu Metal I would suggest not POD which I saw in concert was very good. I would suggest Korn, NON Point, and Limp Bizkit. Todays metal scene I would recommend Jinjer "piscses" the video version that has millions of hits I havent heard a bad song from them yet. The HU a Mongalian metal band playing traditional instruments it is in mongalian so watch the videos. I can go on but I already wrote a book.

Hmmm okay okay, I gotcha. I just responded to another commentor who recommended I step away from slip for now to check out some other groups before stepping back into nu metal. I'll take some of your recommendations to heart for sure. Seems like P.O.D. isn't a very good rep of the genre as a whole, despite their quality. So I should taper my expectations a bit and try to approach it with a new set of ears 🤔 Granted I still might not like it, hahahaha But I'm not opposed to picking a different approach!

Slipknot is a performance band. I would suggest watching their official videos instead of lyrics. Before I Forget is a fun song, and for something completely different try Snuff.

I don't know what your musical taste is I just found you but if you are not familiar with Rock at all I suggest that you just start from the old school rock/metal bands first. I have always thought that throwing someone into bands like Slipknot when they are just learning is a bad idea. Very few people can just grasp something like this without any real idea about rock/metal and it just ends up being a bad time for the reactor and the audience. All you are going to do by starting here is sour your viewpoint because you just don't get it and you are just going to get hate because you don't get it. Slipknot has some of the best lyrics in any genre. They don't tell stories it is very metaphorical and abstract it is also a vibe and sometimes they are just describing feelings. You have to build you ear to this stuff. I think you should start with stuff like Black Sabath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, AC;DC, early Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica. There are all kinds of sounds and bands in between all of what I just named. You really should not move into Nu-metal or metal in general from the 1990s to now. Before you get to that point you should at least be listening to Slayer, Faith No More and other 80s metal bands like Megadeth, Fates Waring, Testament and Mercyful Fate. You also have to listen to the 80s Hair Metal bands Guns N Roses, Skid Row, Whitesnake and a bunch more. Go from 1970-1990 Then get into Numetal and other forms of more extreme metal. You will enjoy it way more and I think the viewers would as well. If you would decide to do that first be careful with Led Zeppelin songs it is hard to get around the copyright thing but live videos seem to work. Deep Purple Child in Time Live 1970, Black Sabbath Paranoid Live in Paris 1970 and Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love Live Madison Square Garden 1973. Those very specific shows are great performances so you can actually watch them perform. After that just ask your viewers to request 70s-80s Rock/Metal they will guide you from there. When you can listen to Faith No More, Slayer and King Diamond etc...without being overwhelmed or totally confused you could move on. I am not saying you have to like it just understand it and respect it and be able to spot the talent if it is there. Sorry this is so long but I get discouraged because I like reaction channels but some viewers don't really seem to think about how you are going to perceive things they are just interested in that band or song or I know some do actually want you to be overwhelmed with it . I want to help and watch someone's journey into maybe loving some of this stuff that you thought never would. I had to edit this and add more sorry. I am going to prove the point I just made down in your comments they requested Disasterpiece they are actually giving you a very very extreme track by Slipknot you won't like it at this point and it would likely be the end of your Slipknot journey. You can do it if you want it is your channel but that was purposely requested knowing what your reaction would be. I have never called that out before but it is just blatantly screwing with you at this point. POD is a great band but not really a representation of the genre as a whole.

This is a very interesting take. I don't think anyone's broken things down like this before for me, so I appreciate it for sure. I think I'll take your recommendation and lay off slipknot for a bit and come back. I think I, in general, have a strong appreciation for music as a whole, so I haven't had too difficult a time finding things I enjoy in some of each group I've listened to, for the most part. But this group has definitely alluded me this far, I think. I enjoyed spit it out, but honestly for all the wrong reasons hahahaha. And I definitely can see where you're coming from saying P.O.D. isn't representative of the genre as a whole. Seeing as they branched out a LOT, and in general have a more urban vibe to them than slip. So while I tried to keep an open mind, I think my expectations were a little loaded due to my past experiences. I appreciate your recommendations.

Slipknot has some absolutely insane lyricism if you look more into it, maybe not so much duality, spit it out as you mentioned is very in depth along with songs like Custer and Psychosocial are also overlooked based on the musical sound people tend to avoid and not pay attention to what is actually being said

Heyooo! Thanks for sharing your first reaction to these guys! Shame you didn't watch the official music vid too, seeing them do what they do as I heard it the first time was a special experience! :D Anyways, given what you enjoyed in this song, I have one select song from three different musical acts that I would like to recommend. In no particular order: Jacob Collier - All I Need .... He's aged in his mid-to-late 20s, 5 grammy awards, signed up by Quincy Jones. There is lots going on in the background (and foreground) of all his songs.. lots of "easter eggs" if you know what you're listening out for. He does everything himself. This particular song, you'd never know but the second chorus is actually a quarter-tone higher... so you'd technically need to re-tune your guitar between verse and chorus to play it properly. I would suggest you watch the version recorded for "Jimmy Kimmel Live" during lockdown. Dirty Loops - Work Shit Out .... 3 Swedish music students, classicly/jazz trained, aged mid-30s, signed by Qunicy Jones. 3 of the most talanted mo-fos you'll ever see. Think Fusion-stuff, but prepare to have your socks blown off. Knower - Overtime .... Not quite sure how to explain this one, really. Talented peeps jamming in what appears to be a hallway? Funk-ish? I feel pretty sure this would be right down your alley. You could make an afternoon of it, 3 reaction videos filmed in one sitting.. ;)
