Before I'm watching the video, why Nintendon't? They literally released their own remake after AM2R. You could argue that AM2R brought a lot more but in the same way SR also made good changes and was also very important lorewise Especially regarding Ridley and the connection to the Prime sub-series.

Zero mission is an excellent remake however I do think it isn’t as good a remake as the dead space remake is.

I adored this game and I've beaten it multiple times. I was so proud when I did the 100% speedrun achievement on my second run, in steel soul too. Finishing Radiance with just one HP, fingers tickling and with more adrenaline than blood in my veins. With that said, I'm never going to do Pantheon 5. It's forever going to be the only achievement I don't have, mocking me every time I hear or see anything related to this game. I genuinely dislike this challenge with a passion. Like you said, it's just 30 minutes of busywork only to be demolished by Sly because you haven't had a chance to get acquainted with winged Nosk yet, so you lost a few masks on that fight. Even if I ever make it past that little turd, I know I won't be able to do NKG and PV ever again in a marathon setting, let alone absrad. It's insane, ridiculous, unfair and a super unnecessary blemish on an otherwise near perfect game. I really don't feel like the bosses in this game were designed with the idea of beating them all in one sitting. But endless congratulations, respect and honour to you for getting through it, man. You're a legend.

I just want to thank you for the idea of thinking about the confrontation with Mother Brain as an interactive cut-scene; it seems obvious in retrospect but I, personally, never would've seen it without you. I'm one of those mutants who are incapable of even noticing atmosphere in an artistic sense, so since, as you note, it's not really a fight, it was my one real gripe with the game. Now, thanks to you, I can see the Ridley fight as the final boss and that fixes everything that matters. So, again, thank you!

I say its absolutely worth having every boss be in the pantheon, why call it the pantheon of hollowNEST if it doesnt have the whole shebang (Even though markoth exists... Besides it is a tertiary ending... Also boo the shame! how dare ya call it a blemish! Still great review.

I entered Deepnest for the first time through the hidden pit in the Fungal Wastes and... To say I was panicking would be... fairly accurate. Like, it's pretty obvious the area is meant for a much "higher level" than what I could provide at the time XD Luckily, if you do fall down there, it's fairly intuitive that you need to got left in order to get back up. If you go right, the path goes away from the entrance you fell down from, while it goes almost immediately back up if you go left. That being said, I... kinda liked it? It felt like you were constantly under severe threat but also it was exciting to be put under that kinda pressure with no warning and getting out made me feel really good, because I overcame the challenge and such...

I guess is really common to play it once and move on, even without finishing it, just to come back after a while and developing full admiration for the game. It happened to me too. Played it first on gamepass and after two years tried it again on my pc and it was AWESOME. I'm terrible playing with controllers and on pc everything went so smoothly it was a blessing. Until the deepnest as I have arachnophobia, it was my worst nightmare but I was able to do it and the feeling was so incredible. 😂

The DLC is a nice addition, but in many ways it felt like they made the game worse. The Grimm boss fights are brilliant but most of the rest of the quests are annoying. Godhome is a great addition but locking new endings off and an achievement is weird and was too time consuming and punishing for me

I actually think Deepnest may be my favorite area in the entire game, for basically all the reasons you gave as to why it's so infuriating. The way you can just kinda stumble into it and get stuck there, the feeling of dread it creates as you creep around every corner, the way it tricks the player and breaks the game's own established conventions... it entirely changes how you approach the world. Just as you're starting to get confident and comfortable with your own abilities, you're suddenly on the backfoot being forced to inch around slowly in order to avoid punishment and trying desperately to stay alive. It certainly had the most emotional resonance out of any area for me, even if that emotion is visceral primal fear. But it's the emotion that stayed with me longest out of any other feeling Hollow Knight gave me, years after playing it.

Greenpath is so beautiful and makes me so emotional and nostalgic in weird way. In my early 20’s there was a summer where 3 times a week I’d go running at night (mainly a night because it was the only time the temperature was tolerable). My brother would run with me and it was really enjoyable. Our neighborhood had lots of trees in it that would block sections of sky from our field of view. Those runs lent themselves to really enjoyable memories. Fast forward like a decade later and Hollow Knight comes out. The music and design of Greenpath for some reason connected itself to the memories of those summer night runs and made me feel insane nostalgia for them. It is the weirdest thing ever. The music especially does it for me. I can’t explain it, it is just so bizarre.

am2r getting legally threatened is when i started to despise nintendo. sure legally they are aloud to do so. but as the saying goes "you knew you could but you never stopped to ask yourself if you should". instead of taking a page out of segas book of praising a fan project and even allowing it to be sold under their name, nintendo decided that they hate the fans and want us to do what THEY want not what us fans wanted. and honestly i feel like the only reason we got samus returns was because nintendo saw the success of am2r and was like "fuck it i guess we'll give you a remake so you'll shut up about it". even today nintendo is proving to hate its fans by patenting a game mechanic so they can sue pal world since they new it was legally distinct enough to avoid a lawsuit. otherwise it would've been shut down years ago when the project was announced. i also agree with a previous point you made in your metroid fusion video how nintendo seems to hate speedrunners and anything that counts as a sequence break. they keep proving that point even now cause in the remaster of paper mario there were several exploits that were patched out and nintendo even had the balls to include extra dialogue that was basically "not in my house. you play by our rules mf". like if it weren't for pokemon being so successful they probably wouldn't still be in business. because of how much they make off of merchandise alone they are able to stay afloat.

I'd argue that Sega being fine with fangames is also not entirely right, they also shut down Streets of Rage remake and let's be honest, they are fine with Sonic fangames because they know that they have struggles staying relevant in the current gaming landscape. Also patching glitches is something not all devs are doing for the current AAA so what's the issue? It's not hating speedrunners but just being a normal dev that don't want to see flaws in their products. Usually when a game is filled with glitches it's (rightfully) panned by reviewers.

I’ve played every game that you are talking about in this series except for Samus Returns (Metroid 2 remake), and I must say that this is unquestionably the best game in the original 2D series! I haven’t gotten the chance to play Dread yet, but from what I’ve read, Super Metroid is still better in the opinion of most people. So in other words, I’ve played all of the 8-bit and 16-bit games. Sam, I know that you said Zero Mission is your favorite Metroid game, and having beaten it just yesterday, I can definitely see why! It places right behind this game in my opinion because of a few factors, such as map layout, Fusion style exploration guidance, and overall pacing. I actually prefer the control scheme of Super Metroid over Zero Mission. I like that the “R” button gives quick access to missiles in the GBA Metroid games, but I honestly don’t mind pressing on of my face buttons to change between items. Granted, you started on Zero Mission and Fusion, so that’s the control scheme that you are used to, but I like the flexibility of most of the control options that Super Metroid gives you. Also, don’t be hating on the grapple beam, because that thing is awesome once you get the timing down! I always preferred it over trying to maneuver a risky wall jump. I definitely missed the run button in the GBA games as well. That’s just my viewpoint on the controls though. When it comes to the other elements, Super Metroid is better at boss fights, map layout, game pacing/progression, and exploration guidance than any other game in the 2D series (as far as I know). However, I LOVE the extra storytelling, fluidity of controls, and epic plot twists that Zero Mission has! Again, I love Zero Mission, but it’s still places second to Super Metroid in my opinion.

Ah, a fellow Nail Build, Sharp Shadow user. It is good to see one of us around. I gotta say, I know that it may not be "the most optimal" build and I personally know that I leave my soul meter essentially to waste by not using spells when I can spare to. But it is so satisfying to beat a boss like NKG using only the nail and whatever damage the dash ends up doing. It just feels even more like a dance to me. That being said, amazing video. I adore Hollow Knight, it's probably in my top 3 games of all time. And I related a lot with certain parts of the video, like jumping straight into the Mantis and getting folded, or grinding the geo to get into Crystal Peak a bit earlier than I probably should've.

0:48 disagree already. Super Metroid does not transcend the system in any way. It is just ONE other game among hundreds of games. The hype because of speed runners is fake and not reality based at all. It is a good game but there it ends. All you kids now hyping it up so much as if only this game ever existed. Wow. I am disappointed in you. Games like Soul Reaver or Vagrant Story, Mega Man X and Super Mario World have always been better. More games on multiple systems outdo Super Metroid so easy.

The content is solid, the commentary less so. For Metroid NES, it was the original Metroid. Basic shots to the side and up, no manual saves so there was a password system for game states, and no map system. Fun to look at, not so fun to play for an extended period of time. It was the era of gaming where you had to draw your own maps by hand because there were no guides or walkthroughs or a Metroid online community at the time. I really like the classic retro aesthetic, so I really enjoyed the updated animations, map system and automatic saves and checkpoints of Metroid Planets.
