@WuparАй бұрын
I actually think Deepnest may be my favorite area in the entire game, for basically all the reasons you gave as to why it's so infuriating. The way you can just kinda stumble into it and get stuck there, the feeling of dread it creates as you creep around every corner, the way it tricks the player and breaks the game's own established conventions... it entirely changes how you approach the world. Just as you're starting to get confident and comfortable with your own abilities, you're suddenly on the backfoot being forced to inch around slowly in order to avoid punishment and trying desperately to stay alive. It certainly had the most emotional resonance out of any area for me, even if that emotion is visceral primal fear. But it's the emotion that stayed with me longest out of any other feeling Hollow Knight gave me, years after playing it.

Ah, a fellow Nail Build, Sharp Shadow user. It is good to see one of us around. I gotta say, I know that it may not be "the most optimal" build and I personally know that I leave my soul meter essentially to waste by not using spells when I can spare to. But it is so satisfying to beat a boss like NKG using only the nail and whatever damage the dash ends up doing. It just feels even more like a dance to me. That being said, amazing video. I adore Hollow Knight, it's probably in my top 3 games of all time. And I related a lot with certain parts of the video, like jumping straight into the Mantis and getting folded, or grinding the geo to get into Crystal Peak a bit earlier than I probably should've.

Greenpath is so beautiful and makes me so emotional and nostalgic in weird way. In my early 20’s there was a summer where 3 times a week I’d go running at night (mainly a night because it was the only time the temperature was tolerable). My brother would run with me and it was really enjoyable. Our neighborhood had lots of trees in it that would block sections of sky from our field of view. Those runs lent themselves to really enjoyable memories. Fast forward like a decade later and Hollow Knight comes out. The music and design of Greenpath for some reason connected itself to the memories of those summer night runs and made me feel insane nostalgia for them. It is the weirdest thing ever. The music especially does it for me. I can’t explain it, it is just so bizarre.

I entered Deepnest for the first time through the hidden pit in the Fungal Wastes and... To say I was panicking would be... fairly accurate. Like, it's pretty obvious the area is meant for a much "higher level" than what I could provide at the time XD Luckily, if you do fall down there, it's fairly intuitive that you need to got left in order to get back up. If you go right, the path goes away from the entrance you fell down from, while it goes almost immediately back up if you go left. That being said, I... kinda liked it? It felt like you were constantly under severe threat but also it was exciting to be put under that kinda pressure with no warning and getting out made me feel really good, because I overcame the challenge and such...

Finding out about -redacted-, -redacted-, the secrets of -redacted-, and, if you get the DLC, -redacted-, -redacted-, and getting the -redacted- to -redacted- are all part of progression, and finding out about them yourself is a big part of the game. Minor tip: there's an NPC who knows something no-one else does. Talking to them again later unlocks a quality-of-life feature that's easily missed.

While I agree that it's a weird decision to not lock any achievements behind particularly difficult challenges and then having godhome ending be one, I feel like PoH has a place to be as it is. I played the game and enjoyed exploration a lot, but it would be a waste to have such brilliant combat to not have anywhere to fully shine. If you want to dip your toes into combat you can just do the colloseums and first pantheons, but I for example am fucking obsessed with it. I NEED such a challenge and i love the fact that on top of the existing difficulty there are bindings to test the player's resource management, patience and ability to adapt to downgrades and feeling weaker than they usually are. It's great that after several years after playing I can still return to this game and try pushing myself further. Yes P5 is a drag and yes it might not be the most pleasant experience but i think it's kind of the point, just like deepnest's aesthetic is to be a fucking shithole that you never want to be in, P5's aesthetic is to be a nightmarish test of endurance and skill that forces you to be just THAT good, just THAT strong that you can take on everything at once and beat a boss THAT bullshit at the end. Also kind of a shame that you mentioned spells extensively but barely talked about nail arts, I changed from not being sure if they even should be there to loving them and being in awe to how much they improve combat. Kind of understandable, they are hard to use as a new player, nailmaster's glory appears too late, you already have spells to worry about learning, and by the time you start seeing a usecase for them they are massively powercrept by maxed nail and a full nail build that most people likely used. However just like with spells that each have a use case, every nail art also has a niche, even the weird cyclone slash that I found first in my playthrough and labeled useless actually is the biggest dps in pantheons with bindings and is the fastest way to generate soul because of how many hits it does. I also really like the way they allow you to utilise downtimes in bossfights, rhytmic fights like grimm can be beaten exclusively with nail arts and it's actually a really satisfying experience. Yeah after all that I wanted to say that it was really a great video, you managed to put into words the subtleties of the mapping system and exploration in general that i felt subconciously but couldn't fully grasp. I just think that you should've put a huge spoiler warning at the start because this is a game that is a crime to spoil and some people might've thought that it's an overview of the game's exploration system and not a deep dive into your experiences with it. Cheers
@basedsamtv2 ай бұрын
haha yeah i dabbled with nail arts for a little bit when i was trying to find ways to beat NKG and P5 more consistently before eventually settling on the "unbreakable strength and quick slash go bbbbrrrrrr" strategy. i'm surprised i even talked about the spells for that long, truthfully. i don't use them much, like i said. i was considering putting a spoiler warning but assumed it probably didn't need it, hoping people would either be familiar with my past content or figuring it from the length of the video, but i'll probably start adding them in future videos.

I adored this game and I've beaten it multiple times. I was so proud when I did the 100% speedrun achievement on my second run, in steel soul too. Finishing Radiance with just one HP, fingers tickling and with more adrenaline than blood in my veins. With that said, I'm never going to do Pantheon 5. It's forever going to be the only achievement I don't have, mocking me every time I hear or see anything related to this game. I genuinely dislike this challenge with a passion. Like you said, it's just 30 minutes of busywork only to be demolished by Sly because you haven't had a chance to get acquainted with winged Nosk yet, so you lost a few masks on that fight. Even if I ever make it past that little turd, I know I won't be able to do NKG and PV ever again in a marathon setting, let alone absrad. It's insane, ridiculous, unfair and a super unnecessary blemish on an otherwise near perfect game. I really don't feel like the bosses in this game were designed with the idea of beating them all in one sitting. But endless congratulations, respect and honour to you for getting through it, man. You're a legend.

Fine video! I’ve wanted to say this for a long time but haven’t had a chance so my apologies for unloading here. Maybe it’s my love of horror or my inner goth but I’ve never understood the nearly universal Deepnest hate in the community. There are sound cues for all the enemies and they are rather weak. It must just be the atmosphere which is subjective and I’m in the minority. My only real complaint about Deepnest is that it feels incomplete and I don’t mean just the lack of a dreamer guardian. I have no idea whether this true but I’d heard that when finishing the game they either cut content or just hadn’t fully developed content for Deepnest. I’d like to believe this.
@basedsamtv2 ай бұрын
deepnest is pretty tame compared to other horror scenes/locations for sure, but i think it just especially stands out from the rest of hollow knight. deepnest is really dark and chaotic and claustrophobic, in contrast to the beautiful, spacious gothic architecture and almost sort of cutesy character designs of the friendly NPCs and early enemies. guess it shouldn't be too surprising for a game all about insects, though!
