My First Impressions of Metroid Dread (No Spoilers)

3:33 See, I think it was crucial to set the morph ball back as late as it was. Being usually the first upgrade, if not one of the first ones to be obtained (or already pre-packaged like in Metroid 2 and Samus Returns), that sense of security given by a pivotal piece of Samus's arsenal being drawn as late as it is takes away all that sense of comfort. The entire time I was desperate to get my hands on the morph ball, and I only grew more and more distressed because there were so many points where I wished I had it to get more upgrades but I couldn't, so the instant I got it I couldn't help but think "God damn, so *this* is how you want to play, huh game?". It may sound funny, but I think it legitimately caused that Dread the title announces. I felt helpless, and for that reason alone I love it. I think it is deserving of being titled the way it is

Glad you enjoyed Dread so much! I felt very similarly and Dread's very much up there with ZM and Super for me, hyped to replay it in the future. I haven't finished the game yet, but from what I have played it is incredible! I love the story so far, and the gameplay is so smooth. I have no idea how much longer I have before I beat it, but to be honest I don't want to know. I am having such an awesome time with it! Totally worth the price imho.

I'd like to cover ALL of the other Metroid games at some point, not just the Prime trilogy! I have the remaster and I really like it so far but haven't had a chance to make it very far into the game yet, let alone compile my thoughts into a video.

You don’t have to do the QTE’s to end the fights it just gives you brief windows to do a whole lot of damage. They are entirely optional for everything in the game as far as I can tell.

Is this true for the Chozo soldiers and for the final boss? From my experience they didn't want to go down no matter how much I shot them normally, but I could be wrong!

Actually this game is the most interesting when it comes to sequence breaking because all of them are not in the nose. They made it in a way that feels natural to go around and get the correct upgrades, so you never truly find where you can sequence breaking, unless you really have that speedrunnner big brain while playing. Once you find out the skips though you can see most if not all of them were actually intended, apart from some very specific glitches on walls with collision.

Yeah, I sorta jumped the gun making this video, probably should have just rerecorded that section. I think the sequence break I referred to in text is the early Grapple Beam skip and some of the things you can do as a result of that, like the quick Kraid kill.

Great first impressions! Keep making more of these types videos. As a side note, you may want to configure your channel's settings to set up bell notifications for subscribers; it's disabled as the channel is marked "for children" by Chewtoobs bs default settings. On topic: I still can't believe this game somehow managed to see the light of day and that Sakamoto has dropped his ego (twice now) to work confidently with a another western developer to make this. That said, my personal feelings on Dread after 100%'ing it are about close to yours- 'good, for the most part'. Back tracking is less a chore now with teleports and train systems that give greater interconnectivity to the world than Fusion. Downside is the long loading areas as a result that kills flow on repeat reentry each time. Music is the weakest part of this game that doesn't set the mood right for most of the areas. Mercury Steam should've bit the bullet and hired someone who specialized in ambient music like Disasterpiece after how well the music in Hyper Light Drifter was and still is. Boss fights with the Chozo's started getting too repetitious and too easy that it became filler-esqe formalities. Dread ain't Hollow Knight good, albeit, that doesn't impede Dread from living up to most of its own lofty ambitions. In terms of 2D Metroid rankings, it's about a better experience than Fusion and a hair back behind Zero Mission. Super Metroid > Zero Mission > Dread > Fusion > Metroid 2 > NES Metroid

dread is my top 3 2d metroid as well, though for me the ranking goes Fusion>2>Dread>Super>ZM (just putting my favorite version of the game in cases that is relevant) while I don't dislike any of them, in general I think my favorite part of this series is atmosphere and tone (though I won't deny I have undeniable nostalgia for fusion and 2, they were some of my first games growing up) zm just pisses me off too much with some of its expansions honestly
