Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD. Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD.” The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, *Accad,* and Calneh, in the land of Shinar (East Mesopotamia). From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.

I m from Osaka and most novels and historical research shows that samurais were trained to be excellent archers. Most of the arons were made by bamboo. And the preparation for the second invasion were stay behind the wall and shooting. Another strategy were many obstacles to stop the mongols cavalry. In case of troops surrounded the walls or even conquering the wall, the samurais cavalry were ready to attack with a excellent skills of shooting while running on the horse, they are called yabusame and still today there is demonstration of this art. My uncle travelled many countries to exhibit this art.

The logic doesn't match. The Mongols could not travel, fight and reach Europe in such hordes. There were not so many cities with large resources to provide for everything.

Remember as I state in the video they used Chinese logistics for travel. It is well documented and definitely took place. Supported by much evidence.

Excellent presentation! I was aware of Hodges diary that went up for auction several years ago. My hope is that whoever purchased it would allow for the diary to be published in book form for the general public. As of this date, I've not seen such a publication. Nevertheless, you've done an outstanding job of articulating life on a frigate in the 18th/19th century. I'm now a very happy subscriber. Splendid!

The Japanese used the word NIPPON (NIHON) to mean “the country under the sun” or “the land of the sun. The term “land of the rising sun” was used by foreigners (both in Asia, Europe) living on the continent, and the Japanese themselves did not refer to their own country as such. In other words, it means “the land of the rising sun (from the perspective of the continent). The place where the sun rises from the Japanese point of view is the place where they see the sun rise from the horizon of the Pacific Ocean to the east of them. (When the Japanese did refer to themselves as such“land of the rising sun”, the first part of the sentence (from the perspective of the people of the continental countries) was omitted.) The Japanese have called their country “WA” since ancient times (until now) and called it “YAMATO (=DAI-WA)” meaning “the great land of WA” during the Emperor's reign. YAMATO means “Peace and Harmony”. The intent of the name is “a country of people and nature are in peaceful harmony.” Since ancient times, Japan has had a natural environment rich in water, greenery, and food, but it also has a harsh natural environment with an island climate, where sudden natural disasters can strike the population and rob them of their wealth overnight. This fact and the aspirations of its inhabitants probably led to the choice of “Yamato” as the country's name in an age without science and technology. The Mongols, who at one time conquered all of China, carried out an invasion of Japanese rule, but failed. Why did the Mongols fail to invade only Japan? First, with the navigational technology of the time, it was not easy, expensive, and dangerous for a large army to cross the rough and stormy seas of the Pacific Ocean from the continent. Second, Japan is a volcanic island nation formed by undersea volcanoes and has almost no plains. In particular, there are few plains in Kyushu and the western part of Honshu, which is close to the Chinese mainland and the Korean Peninsula, and the topography of the country is such that mountains are right in front of the coastline. This is probably because horses, the most mobile weapon of the horsemen who conquered the Mongols and the Great Plains of China, could not demonstrate their greatest weapon, mobility and fighting ability, in the mountainous areas of the Japanese archipelago, where there are few plains, because the natural environment is too different from that of the continent. For this reason, the Mongols withdrew from this invasion of the Japanese islands, judging that there was little return for the enormous investment and risk involved in conquering them. With this withdrawal, Japan was historically spared direct invasion and domination by the continental powers. The natural environment and topography of Japan, formed by undersea volcanic activity in the Pacific Ocean, is quite different from the geography of Eurasia, despite its proximity in terms of distance. About 80% of the country is mountainous, with little flat land except for some coastal suburbs. The entire country has a temperate climate, and because it faces the Pacific Ocean, it is warm, humid, and rainy. In other words, the country is naturally rich in vegetation, as the ground is filled with clear water filtered by the mountains. Green vegetation thrives throughout the country, and the mountains are covered with trees. There are almost no rocky, barren mountains or arid desert areas. People live in the narrow plains within this mountainous and narrow country, and in the mountainous areas between several mountains. It is a natural environment 180 degrees different from the arid, vast plains of the Mongolian Great Plains. The Mongolian soldiers who landed in Japan for the first time must have been astonished by the natural environment, which was so different from that of the mainland. It must have looked like a foreign land covered with green mountains, torrential rains, and thick fog, which could not help but look like the abode of ghosts. The Japanese warriors must have used their amazement at the environment to their advantage in their pursuit. For a long time, since the Jomon Pottery Culture period some 14,000 years ago, the Japanese people have adapted to and settled in a foreign land, which seems unusual from the perspective of life on the continent. This unique geopolitical and natural environment of Japan has not changed even today. The fact that Japanese culture and behavior is so different from that of continental Asia, even though it is part of the same Asian continent, is due in large part to the different geopolitical and natural environment of this continent. Japan is not simply a paradise of abundant greenery, water, and food, but also a hellish land of volcanic activity, earthquakes, windstorms, floods, heavy snowfall, and epidemics of bacterial growth. This is because it is a culture born from wisdom and adaptive behavior to survive safely there. The reason why the Mongols, who had overwhelming military power and conquered from China to Europe, were defeated by this island nation was because they thought their winning streak in the natural environment of the continent, which was connected to the land, would work in Japan as well. They also thought that the natural environment of Japan, an island nation, would not be so different from that of many countries on the continent, and they underestimated the situation, neglecting careful information analysis and strategic planning.

War is fought on land, air, and sea. It’s not fought on just land and it’s definitely not fought on the comment section of KZbin. The mongols tried and failed. Done deal and there isn’t a “yeah but if they really wanted to they could have,” or “it wasn’t the Japanese it was the wind.” The mongols tried and failed. It happens to the best. It happened to the US in Operation Eagle Claw, and to Caesar when he tried to cross the English Channel. He however kept trying until he finally achieved the crossing.

A samurai had to be skilled in both literary and martial arts. Martial arts, swordsmanship, intelligence, tea ceremony, calligraphy, haiku (poetry), manners. Strictly speaking, I believe that the Mongol Empire was based in Mongolia, not in present-day China. After that, they created a large empire extending from the frontier of Europe to Russia and China. Mongolia was hesitant to attack Japan. Because you have to cross the sea. I had no interest in Japan. Goryeo repeatedly asked Mongolia to attack Japan. As a condition for invading Japan, the Goryeo army was made to build ships, and as a condition, the Goryeo army was made to invade first. The Mongolian army and the Goryeo army attacked, but it was the Goryeo army that did this. After that, Goryeo died and many ordinary Goryeo people came to Japan as refugees. The Japanese shogunate gave them land and allowed them to immigrate in large numbers to each region. Even in the countryside where my grandmother lived, there are records of refugees from Goryeo immigrating.

Japan is lucky twice because of mother nature's wrath. Also, the Mongols are not sufficient in sailing but rely on Chinese sailors which they just conquer. Vietnam too was also because of nature's wrath as well. The tropical diseases and long supply route was very enduring.

Fantastic. I hope you have time for more of these, because they’re a really cool format of telling history! This poor guy- once he started on the poppy, I thought “oh no, he’s going to end up alone and dead in the gutter”. But no, yay he dried out and made it home to build a life, albeit not a long one- but at least not a sad, hazy, hit-chasing, lonely one. I know he’s an amalgamation of people- and it’s nice to imagine some people making it home to realize some of their happy dreams!

It was the Irish that urinated and defecated in the street. This was well attested at the time. The cities in the USA never experienced cholera until the Irish arrived and guess in what areas? Yes the Irish quarters. The Irish would also keep farm animals in their rented houses hence no one wanted to rent to them.
