The Ottoman Empire's Siege of the Byzantine Capital of Constantinople in 1453 marked the end of the eastern Greek Roman portion of the former Roman Empire. An empire that had stood for almost 2000 years in total.
This video covers the battles of the 1453 Ottoman siege of the city. In power, Constantine XI the last Greek Roman Emperor is aided by Giovanni Longo and the soldiers he can muster to his banner.
Opposing him is Mehmed II the 21 year old Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who has continued to claim territory around the once great Byzantine Empire now reduced to little more than a city state.

It is said that during the final days of the siege, some "miraculous" events happened which contributed to the morale of both sides: For the Byzantines: There was a prophecy that the city will not fall until ships sail overland... well, we all know what happened with this. There was also a prophecy that the city will stand as long as the moon is in the heavens. Then a bloody lunar eclipse happened. An eclipse that looked like the Turkish flag. People began to pray and hold processions in the streets to seek God's help and forgiveness. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm arrived with icy pellets from the sky. The icon of the virgin mary that they were parading a few moments ago was toppled from its stand. Those in the procession tried to put back the icon and continue the procession, but for some reason they were not able to lift it atop. The flood that ensued broke the procession. Then after the storm, the next day, a huge fog covered the whole city (and this is in the month of May). People began to believe that god was abandoning them. When the fog lifted, people saw strange flicker of lights appear and fade in strange places, but most horrifyingly at the top of hagia sophia's dome. The light on top of the dome was slowly fading upwards and was so noticeable, it looked like it was on fire (and the hagia sophia's dome never experienced fire before). The believers thought this was the holy spirit leaving the city. If you were one of the defenders of the city on that time, if starvation did not break your morale, these events surely did. For the Ottomans: The found the grave of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the companion of the prophet Muhammad, near the walls of the city. He died many centuries ago, during the failed attempt of the Arabs to take Constantinople. This was one of the holiest people in their religion and for them to discover this at this time was surely a divine blessing in their eyes. If you were one of the Muslim attackers at that time, this will surely boost your morale a hundred fold.

Sources vary on that...there were plenty of people left in the city according to some sources. Not everyone wanted to leave their homes, would be for some a tough decision if they had roots, businesses etc...and depending on the level of hope they had...hope in triumph. It would certainly be interesting to see it as it actually unfolded like a fly on the Theodosian walls...alas not possible :( Thanks for watching!

Number 1 saddest anime ending. Seriously though, as sad as the fall of Constantinople is; no Empire can last forever, and when you look at how many empires went down slowly and just withered away pathetically, you have to appreciate how perfect of a finale this is; going down fighting for your capital. If Remus and Romulus (had they existed) could choose how their legacy would end, they would want something like this. F

But the Eastern Roman Empire did indeed decline and wither away. They suffered numerous losses for centuries before this, so by the time Mehmed showed up, Constantinople and a few Greek cities was all that was left of their "empire". Mehmed just dealt the final blow.

UPDATE SEP 23, 2020 - COMING SOON -> RISE OF THE OTTOMANS a new History series on the channel! ERRATA: I said connecting Golden Horn to Bosporus Straits but as someone who has been to Istanbul and explored it like a kid in a candy store I should have of course said "Sea of Marmara"...missed it in editing. UPDATE: I use the community tab on this channel frequently to update on content, run polls for feedback and answer any additional questions people have. It is a great way to stay up to date with pending content. Also...forgot to put my sources in video description so will include them here for now as adding them now will impact the algorithm and the video is doing pretty well for my channel so ill wait on adding it there. Here is an Islamic historical perspective on the siege and includes citations at the bottom of it which I also looked at to try and create a balanced non western only account of the siege: materiaislamica.com/index.php/Siege_of_Constantinople_(1453)

@@YoreHistory George Sfrantzes (Γεωργιος Σφραντζης) gave in his Chronicle (Χρονικόν) the best eye witness account of the siege. He was on Constantine's side until the final hour before he was ordered away to another section of the wall. You will read about the sense of impending doom and the overwhelming odds they were facing. Also, their superhuman sense of duty to defend Christianity and the Greco-roman civilization already 3 thousand years old at their time, against a barbarous Asiatic horde. The last words heard of Constantine while pointing at a group of turks were: "Men, let s fall on those barbarians yonder" He then charged with his remaining comrades, already dripping with the blood of turks slain by his own hand (Sphrantzes mentions this detail), never to be seen again. Constantine passed into the legend, he became the "Marble King" (Μαρμαρωμενος Βασιλιας), waiting patiently to re-emerge from the Romanos Gate when the Cross will be restored to Aghia Sophia. Legend or no legend tho, he does remain one of the most inspirational figures in history, a symbol of decency and bravery.

@Pecu Alex I'm sure some settlements were violently conquered for those tribes to come into possession of the territories that later received the emissaries and agreed to form the peaceful religious entity of Nri. But while the Nri people were running around with leaves for clothes, somebody somewhere with ships, guns and hunger for raw materials would soon be knocking on their doors just as commodore Matthew C. Perry came with warships to the shores of the then self-isolated Japan. When that time came, the Nris weren't that different from the Japanese, they had to learn either how to fight or to lick boots sorry I meant docile and peaceful.

Thank you Geopoliticus, appreciate the feedback. Love your choice of using the Greek "pathos" but in all seriousness it marked the end of 2000 years of Roman history. I tend to think the average person in Constantinople on that fateful day likely had no real understanding of what that meant. Partly because their very life hung in the balance but also because of the long decline of the empire to that point. We don't have the front row seat looking back as they did but we do have a better understanding of what the loss meant :( . Cheers and thanks again!

Here is a link that shows the 14..some are really interesting to read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Constantinople#Eyewitness_accounts As to the 2nd part of your question. Yes it did reverberate and again you can see it in some of those accounts. Many of them knew full well what the ramifications were. Great Video Amigo. In my opinion Yore Channel is a hidden gem on this Platform. A Platform which is sadly filled to the brim with vacuous and insipid content. And, is now governed by a coterie which imposes rules meant to rob and censor the very creators which gave "It" life in the first place. But, I gotta say Channels like Yore's/others make up for all the "Bad" things on here. (Thumbs Up Emoji) (I realize that there's probably an actual emoji menu on this "device" somewhere. But, I think that only God....or possibly Buddha actually knows how to access it). Cheers.

If you don't like the Roman narration of the siege by Chalkokondilis(the same person who reported to the pope, and by his account was by the emperors side until he jumped in battle), then refer to the Ottoman archives. The Ottomans were famed for keeping accurate accounts of everything. Both accounts claim roughly the same things. the only altered accounts are the accounts of the westerners hands down.

Nevertheless, the strategy of Ottomans should be greatly appreciated: Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.

People still thinks its holy war.. They were hundreds of Turks defending the city also a lot of Serbians in ottoman army. People never ask the other side of chain is genovese colony PERA or Galata... Between 1200s 1400s latins and Greek romans fighting each other Genova was ottoman ally and trade parthnetn this is why mehmed II didn't capture this small castle. Pera/ Galata colony has unique thing in Constantinople HUGE TOWER OF GALATA. Galata tower can see anything I prrsonely think genovese stay neutral even defend city at night cover the chain they think Italian navy would come but they never came. So they sold Byzantium by staying silince while ships move. So literally it was inside job. With small force they can defend with greek fire those HUGE WALLS can't crossed. Giovanni and he's men seek refuge in Pera/Galata. And janisarys capture tower Byzantians lost morale. After siege in June one genovese pera / galatas city keys givin to Mehmet 2 Venetians and Genovese become super rich and only trade partners of ottomans. This cause exploration of new world. Shortly those latins were like soft and slow dead cause of Byzantium. They sack in 4th crusade Byzantium become weak and they sold at siege for trade issue. Trust me if ottomans failed the long waited italian navy would remake latin empire like in 1200s

Just saying but out of all the attempts to take Constantinople this one is my favorite and it’s my favorite because serving under Giovanni Giustiniani was a man named John Grant and he is an important person in the fall of Constantinople as his use of counter mining tunnels prevented the ottomans from weakening or invading Constantinople from under its walls and John grant Is very interesting to me because at first greek and Latin accounts referred to him as being a German however an English historian named Steven Runciman has suggested that instead of being a German John Grant May have actually been a Scott and what he means by being a Scott is someone from Scotland and John Grant and me are fellow Scottish brothers and what I mean by that is John grant is full Scottish but I am part Scottish because my paternal grandfathers paternal grandmothers maiden name is Murray and the surname Murray reflects the historic ties between Ireland and Scotland and signifies the bearers roots in the early kingdom of Moray which was located in the northeast of Scotland around modern day Inverness the kingdom of moray took its name from the native Scottish Gaelic word Moireabh which in English means Seaboard Settlement and even though I am part Scottish and John grant is full Scottish I consider anyone part or full as my fellow Scottish brothers or sisters.

As for Kings and generals they are a fantastic channel but like anyone no one is perfect and mistakes are made. Also other videos may not mention certain events but that doesn't mean 1) they didn't happen 2) they don't believe they didn't happen it just might not have made it in the edit. They also have a team of probably a dozen people whereas I am a team of one person so things will get missed on occasion. I watched their video after I made mine as I didn't want to have it influence mine and they seem in agreement...they left some things out I included and vice versa but the pertinent points are there. Great comment but what I stated in the video is that the written account of his speech we have is from after his death not during. I was just saying we can't be sure it was exactly what he said. His speech was very long and the account of it is was not written as he spoke or the actual written speech he himself or his advisors wrote. It was written based on what was remembered and given its length can we be certain it was word for word accurate? We also know his son was killed by Mehmed II etc so how much emotion possibly leaked in? He likely said much of what was in there but given when he transcribed it we can't be certain is all that it was *exactly* what was said. I have mentioned in a few other comments there were 14 eye witnesses who left us testimony no dispute there were not witnesses to the fall just that his speech was likely not word for word what was written to the pope. Close? Probably, but we cannot be sure it was exact as there was no one writing it down as he spoke. I feel that is accurate and the rest as well without us having been there we have to rely on available sources when there is no hard evidence as none of us were there. The hardest thing is to not get emotionally involved...probably one of the reasons I have yet to cover much Dutch history :)

So we differentiate between the two with Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire or perhaps the Empire of the Greek Romans. Also, by then, Greeks were no longer a nation or a people separate from Romans. Greeks had long ago been Romanized and there was no identity stemming to an Ancient Greece. All Greeks, up to the modern age itself, trace their lineage back to Byzantium rather than Ancient Greece. In short, they were Roman who spoke Greek. Not Greeks in and of itself.

@@Cyberpunkerify Exactly. Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire can be used to distinguish them from Romans of the West. Actually in the map of the video it writes "Empire of Roman Greeks". It is not an empire if the state consists of a single nation. This is oxymoron by itself.

A 2200 years old empire, destroyed by corruption and division between Christianity. Divide et impera.
