The kidnapping of Maggie Evans reminds me of the Terence Stamp, Samantha Eggars film from 1965, The Collector.

idk why my last comment didn't get through but: Hey, ex averno fan here too, there was this initiative with them encouraging us to go out and put posters and paint rocks in obvious places that would say averno, come home 27th august and things like that (Averno Street Team), I remember I did a shell and left it at the beach. Everything is very blurry and incredibly difficult to remember, but for what's worth, hi, I'm one of the very mentally ill people that got fooled into believing averno really existed for a while; so Morgan, succeeded even if only for a small window of time. After reading some comments I remembered that I used to read the dream channel constantly, posted once about a dream I had with a "future partner" (coincidentally my current partner looks similar to what I remember that "future partner" to be) and souchii in it. After a while I remember seeing a few pings and a lot of messages, but that's it, it's nothing special with how I was obsessing over it and rewatching videos. The Averno Street Team used to have an official account ran by fans, I was a mod? in it at a point I think, very short lived tho as they changed the password and a new team was rolled in. After watching the video: I remember Kennedy and Echo, they were very active on the server and loved by all, when the ARG started it just... it created chaos, the venting channel was deleted after a while if I remember correctly, it was just a mess on top of another mess. People weren't allowed to talk about their actual mental struggles even thought they marketed themselves as if they could, anything "too weird" (dissociation being a big one as you mentioned) would get you a warning or banned. It felt like going to a psych office and them telling you they only know how to treat anxiety and depression (not to minimize those), just very hypocritical and created a huge sense of unease, people would mini mod at times and tell eachother off, I think that was cut short very soon but I remember it happening. The Averno official account used to follow my art account too and, from what I was made to understand (I could have been lied to I want to be perfectly clear there), I was being considered as a potential future official artist after some fanart I posted, it was very vague but that's what I understood. Now I want to make clear: I never went through what the document declared, but knowing I was so close of being part of it (not the inner circle who got the worst, but the general official team), is terrifying.

While a lot of it went over to Dreamwidth most SF fans I knew went to Facebook some time in the mid-2000s [edit: more like late 2000s / early 2010s]. After all FB works in similar ways to LJ - the ability to post long or short texts in your own space but also communities which could be public or private. That it's a completely different beast is maybe more down to the people who used it (LJ being heavily fandom and FB used by, well, everyone). I'm wondering what is next, tbh.

I only ever used LJ very briefly, it was already on its way out by the time I was in High school, but its so weird to think that LJ and Kpop were things that coexisted in the same space during the same time period.

My mum was a kid/tween when the show was on and my mum best friend (they're still close to this day) was obsessed with dark shadows. My mum however was more into star Trek This is in Australia btw

Ex fan here. I remember their being a web comic (which had been posted on webtoon), that had only released a couple of chapters, just under ten. The art of the webtoon was made entirely by the minors who worked on the art of Averno. A lot of times back when the Averno IG was active (the only platform i kept up with things on) their would be calls for fanartists to share their own work with the team, with this vibe that maybe if your art was good enough you too could join the Averno team. Their was also a podcast that released a single episode starring Morgan and another person i don't really remember the name of, and had to do with the New School, and the town of Averno's weird founder, but it too was purged from the internet. While Morgan claimed they were Averno's creator, as someone who witnessed the amount of outside input (young fans turned "employees/members sharing their ideas) it took to fully create all the different parts of Averno it was clear that a lot of the project would have never grown to be as big as it was if Morgan hadn't had a bunch of people to use and abuse. A part of me is sad that the work all those people Morgan stole from is lost a larger part of me is glad that Morgan can no longer profit and gain from their efforts. Thank you for covering this topic since a lot of the info on Averno was lost when purged from the internet.

I had no idea about the 1 fan 1 stock strategy 😭 but the crazy thing is, I'm not sure how they came to the decision but Henry did NOT make it into the group as a permanent member. They added a Chinese subgroup that he was part of but he never became a true part of Super Junior. Even if it wasn't through stocks (lol) fan backlash probably was a factor :/ This whole thing also reminds me of a controversy this year where SM added Seunghan back to boy group RIIZE after he was put on a hiatus for having photos of him leak or him smoking a cigarette and kissing his girlfriend 🤡 anti fans sent in about 100 FUNERAL WREATHS in protest and it got the job done : ( Seunghan voluntarily left the group but the company really did not have his back on this. Really wild to see that this kind of nonsense fan behavior has been happening for decades
