Please HELP!!! I just bought a Macbook Air M3 and have an iMac 2012 running Catalina. I've tried the thunderbolts to usb c, etc etc. and nothing works. Will Luna Display work for my setup? And if so, can you set the iMac to be an external monitor and close the Macbook Air while you do the work? Any information is greatly appreciated.

I don't quite know what you mean by having 'tried the Thunderbolt ...' ? That won't allow using an iMac as a screen unless you use Luna Display! The MacBook obviously has a keyboard and trackpad, so if you're closing it you'll need to connect alternative external devices. You can't use the same devices as are on the iMac as you need those to launch the iMac, enter Password etc.

Hi Phil, thanks for your informative video. I just got Luna display to use my old iMac 2015 as a display for my 13" Macbook Air 2019. Both have Retina displays. I've connected them using an ethernet cable (using a USB-ethernet converter on my Macbook Air). The problem is that the connection seems slow and laggy. Is there an adjustment on the resolution on either of the Macs I have to make? Anyway I can make the connection faster? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you may have done everything possible to make it faster. Using a cabled connection is the right choice. Make sure that the Ethernet connection is the choice in Luna Display settings too.

Nope! you can''t use the camera or Mic built into the iMac when using it as a display with Luna Display. You are likely to be able to see files (like a HDD) if they are on the CD/dvd using the files sharing feature highlighted in my another video on my channel.

Do you mean Portrait shape (i.e. upright) or Portrait Style ? Either way there should be no restriction. Try Apple's new voice shortcuts in iOS 18

@@HelpfulPhil When I command my iphone to shoot a picture and my camera mode was photo, it did snap a while , but no actual picture was taken. When I switch my camera mode to potrait and gives the same command, picture taken successfully. I would love to see another video of yours doingn IOS voice shortcuts.

Hello,Phi, I currently used Luna display to make my iMac min display in my iMac 2015 monitor, and I already use Type C connect, and the setting go to max, but still the monitor showing blur, how can I set to make it close to iMac 5K ? is it possible ?

its not clear if you have another monitor alongside the iMac, but you can adjust the resolution in Apple System Settings. FYI my 5K screen is pristine and sharp so it is possible.

You can only receive the aspect ratio of the sensor, in this case 4:3.

You'll need to find another monitor to set everything up. Some use TV's as Apple supports those.

Hi Phil, initially I'm going to use the luna display with a new mac mini m2 pro in headless mode to an 27 iMac late 2015 - the router is quite far away so ethernet is not possible. Can I use the usb c to usb a method without any noticeable problems - it's for general tasks and photo editing - I'll also need to do some video calls. thx

Great video, thanks. I have a Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 iMac running Ventura and also have an M1 MacBook Air. If I purchase this Luna Display I presume I can connect via USB-C and use my iMac as the main display whilst the MacBook Air is closed and use the iMac keyboard and mouse? Will look at getting a Mac mini M4 when released.

Yes. That will work, but the iMac Keyboard and mouse may be restricted in some their features, e.g. you will lose the swipe features of the Magic Mouse. If you can set your iMac to auto start without a Password, then connect your mouse and keyboard to the MBAir that'll be nicer to work with. The issue in this set-up is finding a way to start the iMac and make sure that the Luna Display Secondary app starts (on the iMac), but there are ways to do it.

Yes, but better than that - I have a small USB Powered Case Fan mounted behind the camera and I turn it on if I get a heat warning or know that I'm going to be streaming for long enough for the camera to get hot. They're available for about $20 from Amazon; also using a high rated >1.8v USB power supply for power.

Too bad it only supports 5K 45Hz or 4K 60Hz. I'm gutting the iMac instead and purchasing a separate monitor control board to make it more of a proper external monitor. But Luna Display is a good option if you don't want to do any hardware modifications and can live with the lag.

I'm told that you shouldn’t need Luna Display with two M-series Mac's as you can use Apple's Continuity Display, but if that doesn’t work then Luna Display will.

Can this work when the network connection is via WiFi? And if so how. Since my router is not really close I am been using Luna via WiFi and I am connected to my iMac with USB C - USB A cable. I am trying to make this work and my IMac doesn’t appear on the finder Locations. I have the bonjour computers box checked. Any ideas why why it doesn’t work?

Of course Luna Display can work with WiFi as per this video, but I recommend cabled connection when possible. Making sure your iMac WiFi is working, click the 'Network' icon in the Finder window to see your iMac, as shown at 5:00 in the video.

Yes you can do that by holding the shutter button for about one second, using the same technique. You might be able to record video now with a shortcut voice command. I’ll check and make a new video if you can.

I managed to solve this thankfully, apparently I had to enable the “Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing display” setting in Notifications panel. So I guess this could be a nice heads up to mention on your next video. Thank you for your time

I'm using an iMac 27'' mid 2010 with macbook air M3. Each device is plugged via ethernet through my router. I have no direct connection between the two computers Used as a main display it works very well. Used as an extended display, the imac is usually doing a good job, and indeed i can watch youtube videos while doing something else on the macbook air's screen. I do have to lower the resolution to 1920x1080 or lower on the imac screen though, or else I get too much lag.

I've followed all steps but i'm failing at the terminal section. i get an error back within the terminal which says 'zsh: command not found: telnet' i can confirm that ive connected to my wifi, been given an ip address for the camera, and have enabled wifi... any ideas please??

Think I *may* have resolved this. i started instructions on pc but when that didnt work i jumped to these mac instructions and tried to pickup where i had left off on the pc. now i see you have the instructions for telnet installation! All seems to have been successful but i dont have the correct hdmi cable to check. movie mode still displays info on the camera itself, hopefully the output will be clean when i have the cable to check with!

I managed to get this working using USB-C to USB-C and then used screen mirroring. The only thing I've not managed to work out yet is how to share the same keyboard and mouse between Macbook Pro 2023 and iMac 2020. When the Apple keyboard and Apple Magic mouse are Bluetooth to one of the devices the other device doesn't pick them up unless I reconnect them on the other device using the wired charging cable so that Bluetooth connectivity can be created. This is a pain so I'm working across 2 keyboards and mice for now. Any ideas?

I too have 2x Mouse & 2x Keyboards. The input devices for the iMac are used for waking/sleeping and typing the password, so live out of the way.

Googled it and seems that “Hey Siri” doesn’t work in the “photo” preview mode in Camera but works on SLO Mo or Portrait modes. So using Siri on SLO Mo to take a selfie works!

You can now use the 'Take a Selfie' Siri command. It uses the pre-programmed Shortcut, so either say the command or tap the shortcut.-- new video maybe!

Perhaps a silly question, I do my video and photo editing on my main computer, and often use my 2nd monitor to stream you tube or Netflix. Have you had any issues streaming videos on the second monitor? Or is there too much latency?

I regularly stream KZbin on the iMac with Luna Display. Sometimes you can detect a little degradation in quality. I think you'll find it's fine.
