Currently in 2024 it's out of print everywhere. Still worth tracking down a copy. Absolultely love this game, and it packs so dang small.

Another cool thing: when playing with someone who is also "unmatched" (say, your grandchild) you can easily handicap (or enhance) player strength. We do this with a bit of (peelable) masking tape to change the attack/protect values on the cards, or even add our own "effects" to some cards. The same thing can also be done if you get bored with or for some reason want to tweak a hero's abilities. Low tech fix, I know, but it's simple.... One other thing: I'm more an abstract strategy fan (GIPF series, man!) and my wife prefers themed games. This one works great for both of us.

Brilliant review!! just want to mention that the gloomhaven app (X Haven) for the admin is a brilliant design and a superb example of how to correctly involve tech in table top.

Quins, Bravo, I loved this video. The water in your face was so funny. How about a whole bottle of shampoo on your head or better yet paint. Cakes have been done too many times. But more videos of your manky life please. They make me feel so much better about my games and life. Thanks mate.

Gary, the guy that designed slay the spire is really the nicest dude just as Matt said. Met him forever ago at Pax South and played his first game Imperium: The Contention for like an hour. It’s ALSO a great game and definitely will follow any game he designs going forward.

I love this game, it's my favorite, but it requires playing with everyone knowing the rules well. If that's what's required to have an amazing strategic day of gaming, it's worth it. The rules do fit together quite well, I remembered them pretty much fully after a few years of not playing. Yes you need to brush up on ports and it's important to memorize the leader cards, but yeah sometimes doing some hw for a good time gaming is a great option.

This game sparked an entire aftermarket just for better player mats that keep the cubes in their place. I love this game, but then 18xx games are family games in my family, so I guess calculating efficiency is on our party scale. But the card game version, The Ares Expedition, which is mostly the same but does away with the mostly-ignored board and adds the core mechanic from Race for the Galaxy instead, is simply a better game.

They aren't gonna see this but I want them to know: I also prefer Immortality and don't care for Ix. Immortality shortened the game by 20-30 minutes and was super fun to engage with, while not being intrusive at all. And it introduced Family Atomics which should just be house-ruled into every game of DI even without Immortality. It is a shame that Uprising is so much better than all the previous content that I'll likely never use Immortality again. I hope we get another Bene Tleilax upgrade for Uprising.

Are gonna talk about setup and having to sleeve the cards? I heard it tedious and not very quick. And to those who say the “deluxe” version is well worth it because “it has metal coins”… gimme a break.

I finally managed to get this game to the table by cashing in my birthday board game on it. It was everyone's first time playing and I think that's what primarily led to it being a fairly cooperative experience for most of the game. In the last turn, however, ambitions finally broke loose of their holds. My brother's friend, who had paid him off for his support in the Chairman's election, promptly snubbed him for promotions and funding. My father and I, already keen to cause trouble, were all too happy to stir the populace into a rage through oppressive taxation - all while framing our disruption as solidarity with his plight. I cashed in a few carefully saved blackmail and favor cards to force my way into a second Presidency and oust the newly appointed Chairman, with a hefty tax on all his recently acquired luxuries as a final thank you for his service (I had managed to hold the position of Prime Minister for the entire length of the game). My brother and father weren't happy with the law, but I got them on board by agreeing to subsidize any costs of tax or upkeep that they couldn't afford themselves. We were all set to watch the company burn to ashes, with my brother's friend left holding the bag for no greater sin than having the poor fortune of being in the lead at the time. The entire nation was flooded with outrage and its militaries entirely depleted of any regiments that could have protected the company's holdings. But it failed. A few closed orders, and a shaky but conveniently timed peace meant that the one rebellion wasn't enough to bury the company's standing that we had spent the entire game carefully nurturing. That friend won the game by a single point over my father, having just barely managed to retire one more office holder in the finale of the game. Everyone had their VP tokens on their +20 side and the gap between first place and last place was under 10 points. It was a smash hit. Everyone really enjoyed it and my brother's friend said the final turn felt like the finale of a TV show.
