Every time I see one of these racing games I think why no one talks about Death Roads. It's an insane Mad Max esque race game with explosive weapons, unique cars and drivers, and an interesting spin out mechanic. It's obviously more complicated than this Heat, or Thunder Road, but I've had a lot of fun with it.
@gir732 ай бұрын
Agreed! Death Roads is great, but is it even available? When I was looking for it I found a single store world wide that was selling a copy. Lucky I got my hands on it, but no wonder no one is playing it. It kind of doesn't exist on the market.

I really enjoyed the games of Joyride I've played, but I have one gripe - in the base game, only Off Roader doesn't have a sharp turn/reorient ability. The other racers effectively have the ability to eat one sideswipe and not care so much, but I found myself sideswope'd into walls constantly. Off Roader's ability to turn twice at higher speeds came up less often than I'd hoped given the size of the turns on the maps we'd played on.

I've been trying to find The One car racing game to add to my collection. Either I don't understand Heat at all after dozens of plays on BGA, or most of the game comes down to your starting hand. If someone gets to move 15 spaces on the first turn, but you only get to move 8 because your starting hand sucks, you've lost. I have tried to watch for people start out behind and manage to catch up and it doesn't seem to happen. Rallyman seems to have a bit of the same problem. You fall behind, it's hard to get past blockers. If you crash, you lose. I liked Formula De, but it's a little long. Any other suggestions?

People are saying Gaslands, which I haven't heard of. I want to take you all the way back to Car Wars.
@eswift83182 ай бұрын
Indeed, Gaslands takes you back to Car Wars. It's easier to learn/teach than Car Wars, but harder than Heat or the other board game racers. You can play it with just the instructions, printable turning pieces, and some Hot Wheels sized cars. You will, however, end up wanting plastic turning keys and the custom dice. Then you'll realize you got rid of all your Hot Wheels and suddenly will start wandering the toy section of Target, pretending you are buying them for a child. But you could probably get a decent setup for less than the cost of Heat. If you are into modeling, you can use HO scale stuff for terrain and obstacles. There's plenty of 3d print items already out there too. It's a fun game to customize. I know a guy who printed neoprene mats with tracks. makes it even cooler. The main downside is time. It takes a while to create cars, get set up, play, and break it all down. A short game would be 2 hours. Most of the ones I've played were 3-4.

One important thing missing from the review, especially when you compare it to Heat and Thunder Road from the get-go: which stages of play happen in parallel and which in turns? One thing that makes Heat so good is the speed of play, when it’s mostly simultaneous and then just resolving everyone’s actions in order. Another thing that was not mentioned is that Heat goes up to 6 players. And with the simultaneous play, it’s actually best at 5-6 players IMO. I’ve had tons of fun playing it with non-gamers in larger groups due to these factors. I doubt you could do the same with Joyride (or Thunder Road). Oh, and this is a highly me-thing, but I was absolutely delighted that I was recently able to get my 7yo daughter playing Thunder Road, despite not being able to read yet, and not understanding English at all. Since you only need to remember the 4 special abilities, language isn’t a big barrier. Joyride seems to have a lot more “text” to go through in order to play it.

The case is not about game mechanics like 'drafting' or 'worker placement' or 'set collection' or 'roll&move' ... well it is roll&move, but that's not the case. The whole game system of Powerboats is in Joyride. With the 3-sided (so at the D6 3-numbered) dice. The 1 die adding or removing. The keeping a free number of dice from the former turn unrolled. And rerolling your other dice if any. And in your move 1x 60 degrees turning on the hexagons grid. And then moving straight in the boat's uhhhhh car's direction after turning. Etc. The whole movement system is the same, and some things added. So Rebellion employee Duncan Molloy contacted me long ago: Logical. Placing his (so the product manager) name on the box: That's very strange behaviour at boardgame companies.

Just want to shout out the accessibility considerations here. They made a lot of effort to make sure things could be managed visually more easily. Tom shows some of it, but doesn''t mention it. Tom already said it, but it really leans towards Heat over Thunder Road. The art on this is a little deceptive in that way. This game is about steering and racing lines, which neither Heat nor Thunder Road do. The rulebook makes turning unclear, which better diagrams could have solved, but easily solved looking at any video about the game. It's peppy, but has some meat. Wants for every expansion. Truly as sandbox game.

Here more clear about this case: It has all the Powerboats movement rules, except in case of damage (which normally doesn't happen in Powerboats). The last email about the Powerboats contract I got 23 September 2019 from Duncan Molloy, with only this text from Duncan: "I think we’ll work together very well. Give me a little while, as our lawyer is away right now. I will come back to you with confirmation of the contract as soon as possible." My own last email, to remind Duncan, a week later: "Hi Duncan, Okay, let me know.". But no emails anymore from Duncan in the last 62 months, and now I get emails from people telling Joyride is Powerboats with some added things. And Duncan's name as "author". Which is not right. The movement system may look a bit different, but is the same. For example the gear pawn spots are just equal to your number of dice, that and the pawn are cosmetical, (so) wasn't in Powerboats. The 3-sided dice from Powerboats are now 6-sided with 2x number 1, 2 and 3 on it. Which is NOT a DIFFERENCE. Making 4 spots for "locked dice" may look different, but it's just choosing dice to keep and choosing dice to roll, and remove 1 or add 1 die. Just the same as Powerboats/Powerships. Etc. 😞 I messaged and emailed Duncan today to settle it. No reply yet. I could wait for his reply before writing here, because it's easy to settle, but I fear that will be waiting another 5 years "for his lawyer" again? And I'm not a "waiting type". I'm looking at the 53 emails from 2019 now. Quite bizar. This was the first email, titled "Powerboats rights": "Hi Corné, Duncan Molloy, head of board games at Rebellion Developments. I was wondering you were open to a discussion about the rights to Powerboats/Powerships? I’m a fan of the game, and would love to have a chat about it." After several emails to each-other, and a phonecall, I emailed: "Hi Duncan, I'm packing the only complete Powerships game I have here (and Powerboats expansion), which was the production sample probably, maybe the box differs a bit to the final production. Further I only have 1 sealed copy here and 1 at other place." BTW: He received it and still must have it. Later from Duncan: "For Powerboats I will make some small changes, like including the expansion, but it will mostly be the same." And some contract offers which most publishers do call "indecent", like offering EUR 2k advance to 5% for the worldwide rights forever, which is not a fair offer. I offered a normal modest contract at that time. But after this mistake and after publishing it first it should be more. So I did sent a contract today to Duncan for 5k advance to 7% for worldwide rights to sell and to sublicense. And after 3 years the option to add a year each year by adding 1k advance for each year. And my name on the box in case of later printruns. That's still a low (!) and favorable deal for the game's publisher, and okay for me to settle it. (BTW: I was preparing a cars version edition last years, not expecting this after 62 months without messages from Duncan.)
