I enjoyed you video very much. I have a christmas cactus that has several reddish or reddish purpleish tips or leaves. I know you said it could be root rot, but I used regular potting soil from Miracle grow, so do I really need to dig it up and check the roots??? I know right now it's a little dry, but I'm not always sure how much water to give it. Please help, if you can. Thanks. Janet

Give it a try, John. There is no such thing as failure in the garden. We can always chalk it up to experience . And in that way, all of our experiences are positive. Besides, what’s the worst thing that can happen? We toss it in the compost pile! 😂

This compost video was/is excellent. Thank you for not rushing through the process. I had tried making a tunnel in a raised bed and covering it; have used a good size flower pot - dug a hole, added chopped up vegetables , added dried crushed leaves - watered and added soil - another method used has been the good old barrel. Are these methods still benefiting the garden?

You’re a good (bumblebee) Samaritan. When you see a bumblebee, not moving, most of the time she’s just resting. Often it’s because she’s too cold to fly. Her flight muscles must be 86°F before she can fly. And the spurt of energy from the sugar is often just what she needs.

Are root maggots the same as grubs?
@TheUpBeetGardener
@TheUpBeetGardener 18 күн бұрын
Well, good question! From my limited knowledge, maggots are the larval stage of a flies' life cycle. Grubs are young beetles in a beetles' life cycle. The main takeaway is that maggots, grubs, etc., are simply one part of a lifecycle. The circle of life. Does that help?

Thousand thanks for being so compassionate towards your plant(s). I got really emotional with a tear or two. Plants do recognize their caretaker, they think, communicate and feel but a different way than us. Some plants can even see with their leaves! I get so uplifted when somebody is good to another being. Thank you for this emotional moment! And thank you for your precious tips for the Christmas cacti! I cherish my unreal fuchsia coloured one bc my grandmother had the same. I gave it away to a library when it grew too big but when the staff changed they threw it away(!!!) and it took many years for me to find similar, bright coloured one. Learned my lesson and I will always have a plant of my own.

Following the same concept. I put all my compostable materials inside a 32 gallon trash can with lid and it seemed to speed up the process. Drill holes along the side for aeration and holes at the bottom for drainage. It keeps pest and cats out of my pile and the pile remaina hot/hotter conaistently.
