Cited as the first group to follow in the Babymetal Style of Kawaii Metal, Ladybaby Exploded on the scene back in 2015 with "Nippon Manju" that hit over 1 Million views across all platforms in just 24 hours!! The group went through 3 initial iterations and then a 4th reboot last year. Ladybeard left the group in 2016 after being fired for differences with Managment. The 2 girls, Rie and Rei, continued on as "The Idol Formerly Known as Ladybaby" until Rei left in late 2017 to rejoin her sister in the group "Brats" Ladybeard went on to form several other groups after this, with his latest one being "Babybeard"!! Rie then reformed the group in 2018 with 3 new girls and went back to the name 'Ladybaby'!! This was probably the most Notable iteration of the group with several charting song and much touring. Unfortunately the group went on Hiatus after their last concert in January, 2020. One of the girls from this group, Emily Arima, the growler, joined the group Passcode and is still active with that group today! In 2023, Rei and Rie joined forces again in a new group called, RieRei and made several singles. The Owner of the brand "Ladybaby" did try and relaunch the group in 2023. They have been active on social media for about a year with a few songs and some touring but for me personally, the change in style is not my cup of tea. Its more silly alt-Idol than Kawaii Metal. But that's just me. This was a fun group to watch while they were active and has some really good songs in their 3rd iteration. So check out "Starless Sky", "Biri Biri Money - ft. Yeah, you guessed it right: a clothing company made a casting where they selected the 2 girls (iirc 14 and 18 at the time of the video), added the Australian wrestler who was already in Japan, and thought of using Babymetal's popularity to cash in. When the wrestler, called LadyBeard, had his Visa expire, they didn't renew it so they had to disband, and like Aldo already explained the band went to several iterations. One of the 2 girls, Rei, went on a solo project for a bit with her sister, a rock duo called Brats. They did some really nice music imho! They she decided to reunite with Rie, and they formed a JPop alternative duo called RieRei a few years ago The dud, LadyBeard, tried a project with 2 Female Japanese wrestlers, called Deadlift Lolita, and then he did new casting and selected 2 new girls, and founded a new group called BabyBeard. If you want to try something from this latest group, you can try Piennizer! He still does some growls, but imho his voice deteriorated a bit If you want another song from the early LadyBaby, try Age Age Money!

This is very early Ladybaby, unlike Babymetal, they actually did start out as a gimmick, and they are open about it. However, post Ladybeard days, their music evolved quite well. Megmetal (BxMxC, Brand New Day) has written/arranged 3 songs for them. I have them in my Megumi Wada playlist on my homepage, if anyone wants to hear them.

Ladybaby were one of many groups that showed up in the wake of Babymetal's success and sought to capitalize on the novelty appeal of kawaii/idol metal. Originally a costume company's advertising idea to promote Japanese tourism by, admittingly, using the popularity of Babymetal aesthetics. Ladybaby has gone through many different iterations. After the group dissolved, the two girls continued on as The Idol Formerly Known As Ladybaby, then THEY broke up and one girl, Rie, continued the group as a 4 girl idol group and back to the original name of Ladybaby. The growls taken over by one of the new members. This group eventually dissolved all together, but the name Ladybaby has resurfaced as a totally new 4 girl group that sounds NOTHING like the Ladybaby of before. So yeah.... Long complicated history. Anyway, Ladybaby with Rie as a 4 girl group put out some AMAZING music. And not tongue in cheek like this first video. I mean GOOD serious music. Check out Starless Sky, and one of the best songs ever!, Haten Ni Raimei. And just in case you are interested in what The Idol Formerly Known As Ladybaby sounds like, try Lady Baby Blue, and Easter Bunny. Have fun on this journey. Not as deep as BABYMETAL, but definitely worth checking out.

This song didn't really stand out for me when it was released on TOTN album. But that changed when I heard it live. When I heard it live, I felt like the girls were trying to hype me up to go into battle or something. I got an intense feeling of solidarity and purpose. It was like an incredibly effective religious hymn. #notacult but #definitelyacult

Also, It took me way too long to realize that Bloodywood’s drummer, Vishesh Singh, is the one in the video with the injured hand. That dude deserves even more respect for his amazing drumming considering he is injured like that. It’s hard to get more metal than that.
