Question on your schematic ... you use a 14MHz crystal to drive a CD4040 to generate your horizontal timing signals and use a 5V supply voltage ... but at that voltage, CMOS in general and the datasheet in particular says you can drive it at a maximum of 3.5 MHz ... can you clarify?

To someone from the UK that looks like a hybrid of the ZX81 or Timex Sinclair 1000 within a silver 16K/48K Spectrum-style case with those rubber keys. We're so used to the look of the old Speccy that to see this is a bit unusual, and very interesting.

Hi Joe. Thanks so much for this video series. It's been a huge help in understanding composite video generation. I have one question for you about color selection. It's my understanding that the composite video signal requires a ~1V peak-to-peak amplitude. From all the resources I've seen on generating this signal with digital logic, this usually takes the form of 0V being the sync level, 0.3V being the black level, 1.0V being the white level, and anything between 0.3V and 1.0V being shades of gray. My question is about how you're achieving a proper black with that configuration. If you're selecting black with a binary pattern 00000000, with all luma and chroma lines being driven to the low level, wouldn't your final output voltage be at the sync level rather than the black level of around 0.3V?
@JoesComputerMuseum3 ай бұрын
The voltage divider in the final output stage is biasing the black level up to around 0.3v if memory serves.
@Amoshuryu3 ай бұрын
@@JoesComputerMuseum Thanks for the swift response. That makes sense, and seems to correspond to the oscilloscope reading at 6:24. I'm looking at the full schematic now and can't quite see howthe biasing is taking place, but I'll run through the math to see if things start adding up.

Always leave the top off and test it to see if it works first this way if its not working your there i dont even put the shield back on until i test it one of the ICs could be blown and also the very first thing is test the power pack with a meter but defiantly before soldering its wires and all that just twist them together and test it then if its working make a more permanent fix.

I just bought a beat-up Apple IIe with a Taxan Video 7 RGB 80 col card, which I think has the same pinout as the Apple RGB 80 Col card. I know your universal adapter would be best as I see support for Video 7 cards, but your Colorizer III would be cool as a cheap way to test if the card works at all - is the colorizer III compatible with Video 7 boards, or is the composite output via that connector an Apple /// only thing? Edit: nevermind, just found the manual for that card which includes the pin out - no composite signal exists, just composite sync.

For what the board is, it seems a bit expensive

Great story. I bought a 128K Mac in February 1984. I subsequently upgraded it to a 512K, added a third-party SCSI port, and finally upgraded it to what by then was a very expensive Mac Plus (around $4500 counting all the upgrades on top of the original $2500). I sold it to a friend in the late eighties, so I have no idea what became of it-or for that matter the original back when I got the Plus upgrade. It's easy to understand your difficulty getting an original back. Question: How were you able to shoot video of the screen without any flicker?
