Draw cut Katakana, vs rip cut Long Sword…. Fighting style makes the difference. Samurai are taught blade strokes. Long Swords are also used in a type of grappling. Gauntlets. Using the weapon to maneuver the opponent for a thrust. Fighting styles make a big difference. Japan had arm guards called Kotes. OX 🐂 @, ‘😉’

Pozdrawiam Piotr Kow. Good morning I am Polish. In Poland, in the Middle Ages, we used swords (and axes and all other medieval weapons);i but when modern times came, we replaced swords with sabers (a saber is similar to a katana) and we used them still into the 20th century. Regards Piotr Kow.

The sad truth is that Japan stopped developing in terms of bladed weapons in the 15th century. Fortunately, Europe moved away from cumbersome swords in favor of rapiers, epees, and sabers.
@Yaropolk-k3g3 күн бұрын
It is essential to consider not only the swords themselves but also who wielded them and the specific armor they used, such as European plate armor or Japanese oyoro. The katana and oyoro were perfectly adapted to Japanese combat, where mobility, speed, and technique prevailed over heavy armor. The longsword and plate armor were designed for European battles, where survival depended on protection and strength. The katana was less effective against European armor, while the longsword had a better chance of penetrating Japanese armor. The European combination of sword and armor was more versatile across different types of combat, especially against heavily armored opponents. Meanwhile, the Japanese set was more effective in fast duels and against lightly armored enemies. Each system was optimized for its respective culture and style of warfare.

I literally JUST had this debate with a cousin at Thanksgiving lol. He was on the longsword side, I was on the, "they're both good at what they do, but they're for different purposes" side. There are obvious reasons why both sword styles lasted as long as they did in historical warfare

Before going into this video I will not deny my favorite is the Katana. Not because it can cut through anything, but because from my limited knowledge it is made for quick and fast attack methods. There’s also no doubt it’s inspiration in Star Wars. Though in retrospect, the long sword does have the benefit of being a much more duel comprehensive weapon. It’s also heavier which allows for harder and more brutal attacks. And I have learned this from a friend who has studied both of the swords. And he himself has actually weilded both and been in these dual swords events. So he definitely has more experience than I do.

My opinion of this subject, it's a comparison of chalk and cheese. Both swords are a product of their cultures and really shouldn't be compared. I was little sad that he didn't back cut with the second edge with the longsword.

I like my long sword to feel its center point in the middle of the blade rather then at the end, as the end of the blade can make it more difficult to recover from a strike in order to defend ones self.
@GalifraianDoctor7 күн бұрын
Samurai vs a Knight? Knights are well trained, but a Samurai is HIGHLY skilled which i think that would give them the biggest advantage, but the Knights armor would play a very big roll, they Knight could take more chances in order to get a strike in which the Samurai may not be able to recover from, but still i think the Samurai would win.

Katana CAN be faster if its used properly. The biggest difference is how proficient the user is, that is the biggest difference in these weapons, but if you were to face someone with armor, the Long sword would be my choice most of the time.
@GalifraianDoctor7 күн бұрын
It depends on quality of each weapon before you even engage in comparing, next is experience with each blade and then finally do they accomplish the same tasks more efficiently then the other one, the answer will end up being the long sword, as it can parry more effectively while the Katana as nice as it is, is way to flexible to properly parry as effective as a long sword and it cannot do very well against amour unlike the long sword which can properly stab farther and more effectively in my opinion.
@GalifraianDoctor7 күн бұрын
If you want to get over the weight of the $2000 sword, you practice and train with a heavy sword, that is much like it, purposely over weighted so you get accustomed to the heavy sword, when when you go back to the original katana it feels lighter to you and you adapted to its weight and then you proceed to kick a lot of bum cheeks.

Katana doesn't have a CHANCE vs Long-sword or vs European armor. Samurai in its full armor [even the most historically modem and rarest] has no chance against European Swords and Crowsbows. People that think katana is some sort of great weapon just dont get history or japan, that japan is an island that had BAD steel, the main reason why katana is meh vs European stuff is the metal, Japan never had access to quality steel or European steel-making techniques. Katana is basically long knife that made to penetrate FLESH, not fight vs Armor, that's why Samurai armor is mix of leather, wood and only some metals in some areas. If we take full armored classical knight and put it against 5 fully armored proper samurai and let him stand still and they knack on him with katana, after first hit their katanas will get dull and after couple more just break
@Wolf_Mechanic11 күн бұрын
For only 800 dollars you get. A sword with gaps uneven lines, completely dull, a handle mounted crowbar, almost 6 pounds of metal, and a cheap looking sheath. I keep wanting to buy a blade from Darksword armory, then I remember they just aren't worth the money.

what will happen to a katana and a long sword when hit hard directly? Can it happen that a sharp katana will crack after a direct impact and a less delicate sword?
@StonesSticksBones11 күн бұрын
A katana might get a bit chipped & bent (katanas bend under high stress, hard edge soft spine), both will take edge damage Katanas are not particularly delicate (they're about as thick as swords get)

Katana/wakazahi/tanto are prime examples of Japan maximizing its limited resources. Given the lower quality of Japanese iron through intense empirical learning evolved the sword steel. It was simply the best steel possible gor them. The use of a stronger edge steel backed by a more supple steel was common world wide at that era. American woodworking chisels used that same strategy. The brittle cutting edge led to the acceptance of compromise metals less prone to chipping. The chipping of katana edges led to numerous sharpenings until they reached the terminal "tired old sword" stage.

Well comparing these two swords like this is absurd their design is for their own environment while katana is useful in the hands of a samurai who fights unarmored or lightly armored opponents it wont be as efficient as the longsword against the European clad in armor hell no even the longsword is not that efficient at all. Both are efficient in their own military standards but if a late medieval knight faces a late medieval samurai ill place my bet on the knight no need to fantasize it. gambeson chainmail and nearly impossible to penetrate plate armor on top katana wielder would have a really hard time finding a gap between those to get a chance to stab his sword as in this point slashing which katana excels would be completely useless. on the other hand small iron plates and hardened leather may reduce the damage of a longsword slash definitely fail to protect against a stab European knight would have lots of chances to deal a killing blow to his opponent. Comparing both weapons in this way we can easily say that a katana would be only useful in eastern military environment while the longsword is much more universal and versatile as it can be used to cut pierce half swording it and pummeling with the pommel or the cross guard against armored opponents while has a better reach and better follow up strike capabilities due to both edges. My personal opinion is versatility and when it comes to versatility king of the battlefield is the lightly armored lowborn English peasant with a longbow in his hand or a janissary armed with both the best bows of the era adequately armored with chainmail and some plates for important parts a polearm and a sidearm short sword like yatagan, can cause enough damage to cavalrymen's horses with their bows and javelins provide a good strong wall with their polearms then get in and get personal with shorter crushing and piercing weapons. its like one for the price of three armored but mobile excels in both ranged and close combat carries and uses variable weapons well disciplined never disbanding force its the longbowmen but with much more investment in it.
