Got a question. I'm totally not familiar with this type paddling. What does that load (barrel and boat) weigh on portaging?

Barrel is 45 pounds or so and canoe with fishing poles and paddle around 35 pounds. It is a beautiful area. Thanks for watching 👍

I always enjoy watching your adventures. I missed this one some how. You've definitely got the walleye fishing down to a science. I also had canoe trip with a buddy a week ago, but did not film it. We went to the South Arm of Knife. Tring to schedule another BWCA trip before Lake Trout season end on Oct. A solo trip I hope to film and have the camera work this time. Great Video, Can't wait for the next one. Mik

I enjoy watching your videos. I come to Ely every year with my bass boat, first week of June, but I am ready to take it to the next level. Planning a trip into the boundary waters next year. I am not familiar with canoes what brand & model do you have? It looks fairly lightweight and seems to have held up pretty well, for as many trips as you’ve taken. Thanks for your time and any advice would be welcome

Thanks 👍 I have a NorthStar canoe,north winds solo. I love it. I would maybe rent a canoe and any gear you may need to make sure it’s something you enjoy before investing a lot of money. I personally love fishing out of a canoe but it’s not for everyone. If you go on a trip next year, I’d love to hear how it goes. Good luck and thanks again for watching.

Nice video! I wanted to ask if you're using a fish finder on your canoe? Also wondering what would work best set up wise. Thinking 1/4 oz jig with small bait fish/minnow. What size hooks would you use? Thank you!

@CommonManCamps-dz6ur Ай бұрын
Thanks much appreciate 👍 I don’t have a fish finder. I have a real old portable fishfinder from like 2000 that I have but don’t bring. I use 1/8 oz walking weight with a real small split shot to make a Lindy rig with leeches. I’m not sure the size but a small hook floating jig heads or a spinner that has a small hook. Sorry not sure what number of hook. Hope that answered your questions

When you say use the map for fishing do you mean just a map of the lake or the actual depth chart map of the lake

I use just the map. It shows depth contours of some of the lakes. I can use my gps if I try and fish a certain depth. Getting a more detailed lake map would be nicer than the regular maps for navigating. I just get a line in the water and hope for the best. Thanks for watching 👍

A tip on using double bladed paddle. the object is to keep as much of the blade in the water as possible. You are holding the paddle with the longest point entering the water first. it should be the other way around also the length of a kayak pedal when used for a canoeis usually quite a bit longer than what it looks like you are using. With a longer paddle, you have a more relaxed stroke with less splashing. Usually much drier for the Paddler too.
@CommonManCamps-dz6ur
@CommonManCamps-dz6ur Ай бұрын
Yeah I would just grab paddle and go not knowing there was a top and a bottom. I had someone else let me know. I have a 260 cm paddle and I’m not tall. I also don’t get wet. Thanks for the heads up 👍

I did the same trip in 1981. Greeted by the take-off of a great blue heron around a bend paddling in. Camped for a few days on an island in Shell Lake (freshwater clams around it), heard a moose swim to the island. Visited Devil's Cascade alone one early morning and was spooked, felt as if I were being watched. (No bear spray back then.) Saw snapping turtles sunning on rocks. Leaving up the Little Indian Sioux into a terrific headwind, I got windburn. Didn't want to leave that beautiful place! Check out Lost Lakes videos for great camping/canoeing/fishing tips. Excellent in every way.
