I've lived in japan a very long time and it's still weird to me that for a 'high quality'/'high class' service they offer, they often merely change the patterns or colors they use, add a few amenities and it's suddenly 'high class'. the whole process may be just as strict and uncomfortable as anything else in japan, but they miss so many of the simple things done in other countries that let you know you're getting a higher level of service. it's so bizarre to me. the difference between 'normal' and 'highest echelon' service isn't simply a different color/design, a change of menu items, a few small changes to a normal procedure. I expect concierge service, hand-holding, no bulbous or plastic surfaces. I mean everything must look top tier... not merely a 'fresh coat of paint' (i.e. surface only changes). but that's the foreign mindset I guess. which kind of tells you who these 'top tier' experiences are aimed at, certainly.
