This train gave me 1920s America feels. (The Great Gatsby). My husband and i early in our marriage lived very close to a rail line. At 9PM every night it would roll by. We would move to the window of our apartment and pick odd or even, then count the freight cars to see who won that night! Then we'd go to bed. Even now when we hear the train whistle, we tell each other "time for bed!"

Another wonderful video. Thank you. A small point. When you are on the open air observation deck you suggest perhaps it's the only one on a train. Not sure if you mean the only one in Japan, but I have been in the Gold Leaf cars on the Rocky Mountaineer in British Columbia and the Hiram Bingham train in Peru from Cusco to Macchu Pichu. Both had outdoor observation decks at the back. But both are expensive and I had to save up for them! Well worth it, though. I do believe there are others.

This type of service is from the golden age of travel. The famous Orient express by the past offered the same comfort. A travel to back in these days service quality of the railroads. Far away from the rise of the air travel. The finest luxury from the 1920s-30s train travel, where are you not anymore just a passenger, you have the feel: iam a hotel guest. Japan manages the old times luxury trough today! Absolute classic style guest caring and comfort. Deep respect for those ,which runs this amazing train, both from the train operators and both from the crew amazing quality, care. The world must be learn from this example and runs trains in europe too. We have other joy: you can with the class 52 steam engine and classic coaches take a ride to the famous "Schwarzwaldbahn" Black Forest Railway in Germany. But this coaches are just regular but old premium class vehicles, nothing. Not designed for luxury

I’m glad you were able to see your “soon to be retired” train.
I'm a bit confused. At the beginning, you said there was another passenger's belongings in your room. Then, some shots, and your text, seemed to indicate you had a traveling companion. Did they just assign a random stranger to travel with you, or were you alone? Great video, nonetheless.

with Japan's main lines being 1067mm gauge I was expecting a lot of rocking of the train cars, (sometimes this is quite pronounced on some other videos such as the Super Hakuto service) yet this train seems to ride the rails quite well judging by the ripple free drink you had.
