I agree with you 💯% I'm 55 and I grew up with the original David Soul miniseries which I love. I was really looking forward to this new version especially since it was shot in my home state of Massachusetts. What a huge letdown. It felt rushed and absolutely no mention of the Marsten House whatsoever. I hear there's a three hour uncut version with a lot more backstory and character development. I hope we get to see that. Uncut versions are usually released on DVDs and Blu-ray.

totally agree with you and Boogeyman Ben... damned "suits" at Warner Brothers. ...Dauberman/Wan and company tried mightily on this to paste it back together after the apparent hack job. One thing does really bother me. The population sign as the camera comes into the Lot... now cut to the climatic battle at the end of the movie...the number of cars there and the apparent lack of enough vampires there.. where are they holed up? and the ( check me if I'm wrong on this ) I got the feeling at the end that Mark and Ben were driving away convinced that they had really gotten all the vampires, and "it's over"....???? Mabel Werts finally appears but why replace the Loretta Starcher librarian character with this "fusion" ? Mabel could have been stand out on her own! Perhaps the biggest hack job may well be on Pilou Asbaek's character Straker... he really got no chance to expand on the uneasy evil of this beloved character, so well played by James Mason... and demented Santa Claused by Donald Sutherland LOL

Absolutely great review! It was no way near as bad as the delays made me believe it would be. The casting was great, Lewis Pullman as Ben was brilliant. Jordan Preston Carter was absolutely phenomenal as Mark Petrie. I really like Bill Camp's portrayal as Matt Burke and Alfre Woodward (Dr Cody) was great. There were definitely some good scenes, but there were a lot of scenes I didn't like. For me, it lacked depth & substance. Showing Barlow in the first 10 minutes took all the tension & suspense out of the film - I would've preferred a more ominous sense of dread building up over the film until we saw him. I did like the change to the drive in cinema, it tied everything quite neatly together and the scene with Barlow backlit from the movie projector as Mark sees him was a really good shot. I was comparing this version to the book and I wish they had included more scenes from the original novel.

@sammyp-s2s3 ай бұрын
some of aspecs of this version I would agree with you on the lonely, isolated area the kids are growing up in, and the teenage angst. but why did it have to devolve into a smarmy incest tale and let's change gender and sexual preference roles just because "we can"... to me by far the best part of the 2004 version was the dump scene with Dud and the just appearing Barlow. What if the Barlow character could have changed gradually from Rutger Hauer to a Nosferatu monster as his hold deepens on the town, and he no longer has to keep up that illusion? to go back to the positive side. I really liked the Christopher Gordon score, which enhanced the moments in the movie like the awesome score in the 1979 mini series by Harry Sukman

Same. It was basically the main character in the miniseries. Critical to the story.
@josebro3523 ай бұрын
I agree. Apparently Dauberman has a lot more scenes and backstory of Hubie Marsten and the Marsten House in the uncut version. The film actually opens with a scene of Ben exploring the Marsten House as a child. It's a shame all that was cut. A whole hour's worth actually. Maybe they'll release it someday who knows.

@@sammyp-s2s Gladly. In January 30, 2001, it was posted on the Lija's Library Stephen King website that there was going to be a feature film adaptation of Salem's Lot. It was to be made by Warner Bros and distributed by Village Roadshow Pictures. Joe Gangemi was the writer of the movie, and PJ Hogan was set to direct the movie. In May 23rd, 2001, a few months later, Creature Corner, a podcast, had revealed that other than the PJ Hogan movie, there was another separate adaptation of Salem's Lot that was to be a miniseries that was directed by Mikael Solomon. This separate project was the 2004 miniseries. As for the PJ Hogan Salem's Lot, before filming even begun and actors were hired, the project was scrapped when PJ Hogan abandoned the production to work on the movie that would eventually become known as the 2003 Peter Pan movie. To this day, 90% of Stephen King fans, even Salem's Lot fans, were not even aware this project existed. Sources for me are Encyclopedia . com, and two Lija's Library news articles that were posted in the early 2000s, as well as an early podcast from Creature Corner in the early 2000s.

Thanks for the review. I saw the movie tonight, and I have to disagree with your assessment. I'm a huge fan of both the book and the original mini-series since the 1980s. I was honestly shocked at how bad this version was. No character development, extremely thin and rushed story, and just disjointed in every way. The vampires and Barlow in particular were a CGI mess.The drive-in scene was bewildering and the Ann Norton arc was just tacky and ridiculous. You're probably right in that a Director's Cut will serve this movie well. But I just see it as a hot mess as it is. I really wanted to love it. But this movie is so awful, in my opinion.

Just watched it this evening. Far from the car crash I'd kind of anticipated over the past couple of years. Quite enjoyed it. Very pleased to see the story condensed into a two hour film which, frankly, is all I feel this story requires. Nice '70s look. Maybe not massively cinematic but I thought it had enough very good moments to make it worthwhile. Some nice differences from the previous two versions. And, was that Christine we caught a glimpse of early on (I'm not a car buff, so it might not have been a Fury, but looked similar to me).

I managed to get hold of a copy yesterday. I was profoundly disappointed and I'm amazed some people rate it so highly. The acting is extremely wooden especially Pullmans performance and the lack of scepticism among the townsfolk is pretty laughable. Having read reviews based on the original cut you can tell that huge chunks of the story were cut to satisfy the studio execs. Originally Ben wakes from a nightmare he had about his experience at the Marsten House. Here we see him staring at the house but offers no explanation not even to his love interest Susan. Jordan isn't very effective or believable as horror fan Mark Petrie despite Daubermans best efforts. I'm not sure an extended cut would make any difference even Barlow isn't scary and some of those iconic scenes from the original are handled extremely badly with this iteration.
