Thanks for the great review, it’s very helpful! I have a question that was asked in an earlier comment: how did you cut the stones? Thanks!
@Iheartknives1
@Iheartknives1 5 ай бұрын
The easiest way to cut stones is with a diamond hacksaw blade. A regular hss hacksaw blade will dull incredibly fast. Also, the lower the grit the easier they cut. The finer the grit the more difficult they are to cut. The 320 grit stone cuts much faster than the 1k did. I hope this helps and good luck! Ps take your time/don’t rush it!

What do you condition the leather with?
@Iheartknives1
@Iheartknives1 7 ай бұрын
It depends on the condition of the leather. If it’s really dry I like to use neatsfoot oil and then use dovo strop wax. If it’s newer plush leather a little strop wax and buff with a brush and you’re good to go. It all depends on what you’re using it for.

if you lie the 500 for that then you should try the 320. the 320 and 500 in the glass line are interchangable. the 320 is just even faster. the 120 and 220 are also interchangable. those are true course stones and are great as well. hard. cut fast. wear slow. and yes, even the 120 can leave a great edge, but you will need a way to deal with the burr if you use that alone.

Good video. I have 1k, 3k 12k vitrified diamond stones. For conditioning I use 6k El cheapo alumina stone. For sharpening I use window/glass cleaner with water. Don't go faster as your Eyes can follow your fingers, don't slip of the edges, leave the edge on the stone. when a company selling diamond abrasives tells you the distribution ie 14 to 20 um, that's called honesty. all diamond abrasives work that way. only very expensive specialty items with ultra fine high grits have tiny distributions, some as narrow as a tenth of a micron. Any diamond based abrasives youre gonna buy is going to be a distribution like that. 14 to 20 um is just fine for an item like that, based on how hard the binding, it would leave scratches like about 800 grit JIS waterstone.

I've very familiar with these. The glass stones are the highest quality SNG white ceramic alumina stones on the market imo. I know choseras have a lot of fanboys, I am one. I have the full set. They don't cut like SG does on stainless. The lowest grit Choser, the 400 is a really nice hard course stone, but the edge is much finer than youd think. It's almost like the 1k Sp. Anyway I'm ranting. I always tell folks. Get the 500 and 2k glass. That's what I tell everyone to get. If you one stone and be done, get the 1k Sp, which is really like a 800 grit stone at best. For the Sp, I tell folks for one and done get the 1k. Which is great. It's a courser fast 1k. Does it all for ya. Done. Or, get the 320 and the 2k. The 2k is the best Sp stone in the line. For me, if I had to get two for myself, it woud be 220 and 2k sp. For the glass, the 500 is a beast. 500 and 2k is all you'd ever need. Anything above the 2k in sp is a polisher. Anything baove the 4k in SG is a polisher. The SG polishers are kinda simiar to the choseras 5k and 10k, but also so are the pros.. I mean the 12k pro is like a slightly harder, slightly less friable version of the 10k chsera. for razors, idk man. I'd never take a razor to the 1k sp. I've fixed chipped razors starting on the 5k. and it takes minutes. Like razors don't need much. You need basically 2 stones to do razors. a good fine sharpener, for a razor, and a finisher. 5k sp and a 12k ss is all you'd ever need beyond strops and compound, which is what you really need for most maintenance. If you've never tried super stones, they are bar none the best polishing stones in the world. The entire line are finishing/polishing stones tho. Just be aware. Whatever grit edge you want to finish at, thats what those stones are for. The 12k is a beast. It puts mirrors on anything even coming from 400 or 500 grit stones in two minutes. Easy. And the results are amazing. Works on everything from hard high carbide stuff to cheapo soft stainless thats always a bitch to get good results on. I think I have issues.

14:11 the original version was phenyl resin which is widely available and fairly low tech, once you bake it and it cures then it becomes really hard and heat resistant. they didn’t add any other cutters when the option was available. the diamond abrasive is one karat per cubic centimeter on the 100% versions so on the dragon stone’s it is 19 karat’s per side. i can buy abrasive diamonds in any grit 25 karat for $10 and then just get the resin and diy the stone for around $20 total or i could add additional cutters. cbn isn’t expensive by itself. the dragon stones are almost $300 right now because it’s made in russia so limited availability, originally they were $80 so it’s not like there is actually $300 of production value in these stones and now there’s a hole in the market for something that we could probably all make at home once someone makes a youtube video about it. i wonder what is up with the ocb bonder

But America is the land of big money and no brains. Wont last another generation but enjoy it for now. if you think thats bad look gimmicky scams like diamond emulsions like gunny juice or anything like that. They're buying generic industrial diamond slurry anyone can find even on amazon and they're marking it up 1000x and knife bros eat this stuff up and think they're getting something amazing. I can literally buy a gallon of the same stuff for the price knife bros are paying for a tiny little half ounce bottle like a spoon full.. Its absurd but knife bros eat that stuff up. I understand why they charge that because otherwise there is no money to be made selling it. But what I don't understand is why anyone in their right mind buys it. Hey you wanna pay $70 for literally 50 cents of generic industrial diamond slurry? I gotchu. its not even about broke or something like that either. I'm a typical idiot myself with 10 grand worth of knives and stones I have little real use for it. It's just absolutely silly and absurd to pay $300 for a stone I can have shipped from Russia for like $100. Even more absurd to pay $70 for less than $1 of generic industrial diamond powder

6 months? I enjoy learning new things. So I learned this. It didn't take 6 months. It took basically one afternoon to get functional results, from a baseline of "never did it before." When I say one afternoon I mean I literally sat there for hours on end and put knife to stone until progress was made. Took a couple weeks of occasional practice, 20 or 30 minutes at a time, that's the whole setup to cleanup time, to get good results consistently and built confidence. Continuing that for a couple months to get proficient to the level of being able to do basically anything anyone else could do. I mean sure, I ended up spending a few grand on knives and stones, so that I could try all different types of cutlery steels and abrasives, but that's just life. You wanna play you gotta pay. It's really not that complicated or difficult and I am not a physically talented person. I find all the mythology and weirdness around knives and sharpening to be super weird and little boy brained. What I found interesting is the total and utter lack of any reliable information about anything related to these topics online. It's kind of mind boggling. I think that comes from basically bored little boys going online and talking about things they have no clue about with a highly confident tone. Then the bullshit just goes on a ride and it becomes a cycle. Just my guess. I'm tempted to teach an elderly woman how to do it just so I can post videos of her effortlessly doing things the edc bros will claim are highly difficult. I say that in jest but also yeah. As for this stone and steel. The 500 glass is a serious cutting splash and go stone. This is a stone you have to be mindful when using because you can easily change the bevel and profile of normal stainless steels knife rather quickly. It's a great stone. I really wouldn't use it on anything other than than totally dull knives, or otherwise on steels that start to get above 3-4% vanadium where regular stones becomes an issue. ZDP is fantastic for basic knives like kitchen knives. Amazing steel. Very easy to sharpen unlike what morons online claim. Yeah it's got the abrasion resistance of 10v but it sharpens like it's vg10. That was designed that way intentionally. The downside is it's brittle... for steel. It's still steel though. I think a lot of people forget that. It's still steel.

What nobody seems to talk about, the giant pink elephant in the room, is that the soccom, until one practices and gets used to not holding their fingers over the blade when deploying, is very difficult to deploy. On the spy military, the blade sits a bit higher above the scales when closed, so there is no hassle opening it quickly and efficiently without any thought. The soccom blade is hidden more inside and even with the scales at the bottom, so you must learn to curl your fingers back onto the scale to deploy it properly without blocking it slightly with your fingers holding the blade back. In an emergency, having to use the knife for protection, I choose the military all day long. The soccom, for me, the scales/handle is way too petite, too small for a 4" tactical blade. Sure the soccom is sexy and tactical, but the military is just absolutely a smarter design in every way. Like the guy said in a different video, "The military is one of the best liner locks ever made." I agree totally.

Hey thanks for the comment. I’d say if you get any stones over 2000 grit it doesn’t matter as much. The shapton pro are about as hard as the glass stones. As for the coarser stones I would choose the shapton glass 500 over the shapton pro 320. The 1000 grit shapton pro is a medium hardness stone. It doesn’t dish fast or slow. It’s pretty average for a 1000 grit stone. They’re equal because you get more material from the pro stones but the pro stones dish quicker under 2000 grit. It’s all a trade off. If you want a hard 1000 grit stone I’d say go shapton glass or the j a henckel stone. I go between my chosera 800 and the henckel 1000 for knife sharpening and then finish with either 4000 shapton glass or sometimes just go to a strop depending on the knife. You can’t go wrong with a shapton glass 1000 or henckel 1000. Don’t listen to KZbin guys telling you to buy every grit of stones either. You need 2-3 stones and a strip or two and that’s more than enough. You can get away with one stone and one strop if you wanted to. If I were doing it all over I’d buy an atoma 400 diamond plate for chipped knives and flattening stones, shapton glass 1000 and shapton glass 4000. I hope this helps.

You can always use sandpaper and a piece of glass to flatten the stones. Naniwa chosera stones are expensive but you get a lot of stone and they’re amazing stones. Hopefully this will help for your next system. You can’t go wrong with chosera, glass or henckel stones. The pros are good but the coarser ones dish fast.

I would like to see a comparison for setting bevel on a straight razor extra full hollow with 1000 Shapton glass,1000 Chosera, 1000 Naniwa Diamond, 1000 Super VEtrified diamond stone TRIPLE B HANDMADE (450$!!!!) . I have never seen setting a bevel with the resin Diamond stones! instead yes with the dmt diamond stones! That will save a lot of time and stress espicially to beginners thats doesn't know ho to cut right the cutting edge! to produce a right bevel!!!

I’ve set a bevel on the venev bonded diamond stones and tons of bevels on an atoma diamond plate. The BBB stones are good for certain steels but I don’t think they’re worth the money for straight razors. Razor steel is too soft and simple for the complexity and cost of expensive bonded diamond or CBN stones. If you have money to blow then of course the BBB stones will work well or the naniwa diamond stones. I couldn’t see spending the money on those stones for razors though.

What you says about Kramer has no sense Kramer and Choosera ate the same stone!

They’re similar but not the same. Chosera is softer and a little more coarse. The Kramer is a little harder and does not slurry as fast as the chosera. Kramer also polishes a little shinier than the chosera.
