If I can give my honest opion hatchet/axes steels are very soft , so no need to use anything fancy with them. I used a 150 grit VSM belt then refined with a cheap 2€ stone. :) Also the belt sander gives a beautiful convex edge that is more resistant to impact. p.s you talked about the convex edge in the video, with the belt sander it's natural . Then you can refine with a stone if you want 😀

Absolutely. I’ve done it a few ways. This video was more to test out how the stones performed since they were smaller inexpensive cut offs. Honestly sandpaper and a piece of wood work just fine too. I just reprofiled my brothers maul axe on my 2x72 belt grinder and it did an amazing job. I didn’t even use a stone after the belts. I ended up just stropping with 16 micron Cbn emulsion after the 220, 320 and 600 grit belt progression. I have to say the steel on the axe in this video was pretty hard considering most axes are extremely soft. Compared to my brothers maul axe it’s night and day. This axe will chip before it rolls.

@@Iheartknives1 Are you from USA ? wich belts have you used ?
@Iheartknives12 жыл бұрын
@@dimmacommunication yeah from USA. I usually use trizact Or Norton structured abrasive belts for finishing above 120 and I really like the Norton blaze belts in 24,36,50,60 and 100/120 grits. I’ll usually do 36,60 and 120 as my progression for grinding knife blanks. They cut so fast and take the pressure without heating up the steel quickly. They last long for the money too.

Axes are just plain fun, until you have to use them!
@Iheartknives13 жыл бұрын
Mike I could definitely see that becoming a nuisance over time. They're a ton of fun for a couple hours, but if I had to depend on them for heat to keep a fire going I could see how my opinion would change quickly!
