The idea of Ellie going after revenge for Joel’s murder is solid-Joel was her father figure, and since he didn’t have much remorse about killing, it makes sense Ellie wouldn’t either. The real problem is how they handled it. They forced Joel into acting out of character just to kill him off and push the plot forward. The whole parallel between Abby and Lev with Joel and Ellie? Sure, it’s a cool idea, but they didn’t even give Abby a real reason to care about Lev that much. From the start, she’s ready to risk everything for him, but there’s no proper setup for why she’d do that. Plus, this parallel doesn’t serve the main story-it’s just there to make players feel sorry for Abby. Lev could’ve played a big role in Ellie’s decision to stop her revenge, but nope. Instead, Ellie randomly realizes that killing won’t bring her peace, even though the game never gave her anything to reflect on. She clearly didn’t care about the people she killed, since she went right back to chasing Abby after settling down with Dina. The game has a bunch of cool ideas, but the writing just isn’t there. It feels rushed, like they rewrote stuff halfway through, which is probably why there are so many plot holes.

Nah, the writing is garbage, which is why the story’s full of plot holes. The game has good ideas and concepts, but the execution is what ruined it and ended up dividing the fanbase. Good writing doesn’t cause that kind of split.

@Mr_Blueberry Nope you just personally didn't like the shocking directions the story went in or the risks it took. I am a huge fan of games that subvert expectations even if it goes against the norm or what most fans want. I couldn't care less about the fact that fan favorite characters were killed off. If a compelling story is told I am more than happy for games to kill off any and everyone. The gaming industry needs less "safe" sequels that cater to popular demand and more games that are unafraid to challenge gamers perspectives.

Look at Arthur Morgan and John Marston, both dead, but what makes them different from Joel? They died in character. With Joel, they rewrote his character just to make it easier to kill him. Instead of finding flaws in his character, they straight-up lobotomized him, and that’s what people hated-not that he died, but that they erased everything about him and had this brand new character just kill him out of nowhere.
